WHO defunding

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I wish politicians and media would refrain from talking about issues they clearly have no ability to understand.

It's true Trump has verbal diarrhea and says a lot of things that make me cringe. I'm not sure Biden even know what year it is, or where he is most of the time. Most of his public statements and comments are at least as strange.

Thanks, I don't think any of us knew this...turns out bleach & fire will also kill microbes! Doesn't mean that we should encourage patients to ignite themselves with gasoline.

No one is expecting him to be a doctor. In fact, he could just not talk about "medical stuff" and let the actual doctors do that. Instead he has promoted a drug that doesn't work (with the help of Fox News and Dr. Oz) and now said asinine things about injecting disinfectants. I think we can expect basic intelligence, thinking before speaking, and knowing when to defer from the president of the United States.

It is amazing how many people (much less physicians) will defend him regardless of what he says...just take the "L" on this one. Admit it was stupid without excuses or whataboutisms. You can be still be a Republican and think Trump is a *****, I promise.
The Trump 'phenomenon' is something some of us will probably never understand...

Excuse! Excuse! Excuse!

Hillary!

Obama!

I suspect that Trump was referring to 2 investigational devices:

1) This one uses UV light through an ET tube and was developed at Cedars-Sinai for COVID.

2) The second are several devices looking to eliminate aerosols by passing expired air from certain CPAP/BiPAP machines and portable vents through a membrane impregnated with hypochlorite or exposed to UV light.

While Trump came pretty close to sticking the landing on #1, I’d agree that he crashed and burned in his allusions to #2. Having said that, if Nancy Pelosi and other dems are really so stupid that they came away from the presser with the idea drinking Lysol, then I’ll gladly pour her a glass.

Wishful thinking

And I’d dare you to stand up and say something like that in front of our military men and women who defend your freedoms and are overwhelmingly southern/midwestern and conservative. How well do you think our economy would run without our armed forces?

Wait. What?

This made me pause because, like many posts here, it seems to be misinformed and filled with emotion (tribal anger) and cognitive bias. I have no personal (but plenty of family) experience in the military, but my quick google search revealed this:

How did we get to this point?

Good lord, dude. Your toxic hyperbole is the problem with America right now. You’re right, red states contribute nothing. Might as well just send everyone who lives there to the gas chamber.

I don't mean to be piling on TimesNewRoman, even though it may see like I am....it's just that I can't make it through this thread without responding (my own pathology). In fact, TNRoman and I have post-professionally trained in similar manners; and likely agree with each other more than we disagree (hence, I feel comfortable "piling on him").

I am responding to this hyperbolic, semi-sarcastic post, because even @VAhopeful approved of it.

TNRoman - are you really decrying 'hyperbole' by poorly rhetorically asking if those people in red states should be "sent to the gas chamber"?

Maybe this second beer has made me nostalgic, but what happened to honest discussion and community-based respect?

Really? Do you, @ShockIndex, really think Trump was referencing this somewhat obscure biotech?

If you were rambling at the bar one night, I would give you the benefit of the doubt. But Trump? Really?

Is it more likely Trump was just rambling without knowledge or self-awareness?

I took offense to the statement that “red states contribute nothing to the economy.” Its a flawed world view that leads to a binary concept of good and evil that subsequently categorizes people as good as evil. Have you read “the coddling of the American mind”? They describe the cognitive biases more elegantly than I can, but, suffice it to say, when people start to parrot and believe the statements like “red states contribute nothing to the economy” they are only a few steps away from thinking “people in red states are evil.”

I think statements this stupid shouldn’t be argued, but should be pointed out as complete and utter nonsense (which was my entire point).

"Red States contribute nothing to this economy."

Besides...

Agriculture.
Timber.
Mining.
Manufacturing.
Natural gas.
Oil.
More agriculture.

You know... nothing important happens in those "flyover" states.

Spoken like a true "Archipelago of Cities" dweller, where if there's not a brand-name-logo stamped on it... does it even matter?

Wait. What?

Look at those numbers again. 6 of the top 10 are the south, so in spite of being a relatively small part of the US population, it’s a large portion of the military. Connecticut, Deleware, Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont, RI all have under 5,000 people in the military each. Kentucky has 31,000 alone.

Yea... and I'll care about the few steps away from "people in red states are evil" the second the people in the red states stop actually calling California and New York "evil." You know, all that BS about "true Americans."

Connecticut: 3.56 million people
Deleware: 0.97 million people
Maine: 1.34 million people
Massachusetts: 6.94 million people
Vermont: 0.623 million people
Rhode Island: 1.05 million people

Now... Kentucky... 4.46 million.

So outside of Massachusetts, all of those other states have less population... and with the exception of Connecticut significantly less.

However if we're going to play this game using absolute numbers, the most patriotic state is... drum roll please... CALIFORNIA!

Great. Perpetuate what problem. Embrace segregation.

I have looked at the numbers again.

I suppose it depends upon what you consider the "south".

Yet, regardless of this subjective assessment, your original statement screams the tribalism of the uninformed.

[excuse my inflammatory rhetoric...it's been a long night]

I don't think Nevada contributes anything good to the union. Just the means to act out terrible compassions of debauchery.

this thread is totally wonkers now. I can't even follow it.

People are arguing about how to define how southern something is.

Since we tell people where to live once they sign up you can’t really judge by where they are now as to that state’s “chipping in”. You have to look at enlistments which is harder to do because you also have to look at it per capita

this was the closest i could find in a few minutes of google

I think it's time for me to direct my attention elsewhere for awhile.

No, my original statement screams of frustration with the condescension of liberals towards conservatives. I’m fairly surprised you’ve chosen to dig in on my military statement and skipped over “the south adds nothing to the economy.”

Yeah, I have re-read the thread and I tend to agree with you. I am not sure why I choose to "dig my heels in" about a very small aspect of my overall frustration.

I think I just got to the end of the thread filled with crass hyperbole, misinformation, and tribalism and your posts, containing some of these features, were there. I should have focused on the bigger issues and used some other examples also, like the one you pointed out regarding the dismissal of Americans living in some rural areas.

I remain frustrated with the deterioration of rhetoric, the misinformation, the dismissal of expertise, and the politicization of medicine that seems to have infected this subforum recently. I will try to express the frustration more thoughtfully -- as a plea to others perhaps -- or take a ride in the hills.

HH

Hamhock, is that your bike in the picture? Looks like a sweet ride! What brand is it?

Cuomo criticizes McConnell’s remarks on state virus aid:

“NY puts in to that federal pot $116B more than we take out ... KY takes out $148B more than they put in.

Sen. McConnell, who's getting bailed out here? It's your state that is living on the money that we generate”

It's been long overdue that someone makes that clear to most of these "red" states... that contribute nothing to the US economy.
And the red states that do?
Also, part of the issue is that people keep artificially suppressing costs of things like crops internationally. So the only way the breadbasket can keep working is with government subsidies.
While I don't always agree with them (and was disgusted with it for tobacco), it sure makes sense right now when we can't import unlimited sugar, wheat, rice, and Kobe beef.

I've had to walk away from threads in the past. Some things aren't worth getting riled up about, and obviously with some posters there seems to be a "last word" issue.
Not saying either of you were doing that, but I've certainly experienced it, and others likely have too.
No harm in keeping sane. Some people enjoy discussing, some enjoy arguing.
We try to move the threads that talk about only politics (and this comes remarkably close, don't get me wrong). But it's more of a feel it out situation. If the entire forum (at least the active posters, all 20 or so of us) are participating, we would keep it here.
If it's two dudes, or people from outside the EM forum bickering it out, then we punt to SPF.

Since Trump specifically said that he just finished discussing said obscure biotech with the director of science and technology for DHS (the guy standing to his right during the presser), I think that it is very likely that he was rambling with poor knowledge and self-awareness about the technologies that he had just been briefed on and discussed. Perhaps that might teach him a lesson about trying to summarize and speculate on complex science topics, but I’m not optimistic since Trump thinks that the garbage that comes out of his mouth make him seem intelligent and informed.

What I don’t think happened, and certainly didn’t hear, was Trump suggesting that people ingest or inject disinfectants to treat or prevent the rona. That is what Nancy Pelosi claimed that Trump said, and her claim is far more stupid than any of Trump‘s ramblings.

Yes, he used the word inject. But he wasn’t suggesting people do that, he was suggesting scientists look into it. And of course the news is leaving out a very key part:

“And is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside or almost a cleaning. Because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs. So it would be interesting to check that. So, that, you’re going to have to use medical doctors with. But it sounds — it sounds interesting to me.”

He definitely demonstrated a Muggle's understanding of a complex medical topic. This is one of the pitfalls of Trump's extemporaneous press conferences.

Absolutely. The part I was referring to was how he said specifically that this is something we will need doctors for. He didn't tell people to go ingest or inject lysol.

Yet, if you listened to CNN, MSNBC, and the political left on the internet, you would think that the lobby bar in the Trump International Hotel DC is serving Lysol martinis infused with UV light.

That's an actual drink served not in Trump hotels but in Democrat run Minneapolis. It's called the Franklin Avenue Cocktail and has been around for years.
