I just can't stand it. Its completely boring. The text book (Ross) has way too much information, their lecture notes have way too little information, and I'm too scared to rely only on BRS. Is anyone else hating histo as much as I do? I can't even fault the lecturers, because I don't know if anyone could make a histo lecture interesting or at least not boring. Ok.....back to studying.

[yoda] Much to learn yet, have you young Skywalker . . . mmmmm . . . mmmmmm [/yoda]

BRS was basically enough at LLU, at least for me.

If, in the scope, all you're seeing in pink and purple, keep looking, one day it all begins to look like different tissue

I was really surprised, but I actually wound up liking histo. We had a really great, super organized professor, though, so our syllabus and powerpoints were always enough -- no need to ever look at a book.

I think most people don't exactly love histo, though. 🙂

I actually like Histo. It's Embryo that I can't stand.

I really liked histo, actually - I used Wheater's Atlas, which I thought was nice. It summarizes key points well, and it has a lot of good pictures.

I guess you just started histo? The intro to histo stuff sucks...it's truly the most boring thing on earth. ("Is it cuboidal, columnar, or columnar with goblet cells?") But, after that, when you start studying individual organ systems, it's pretty neat. It gives you an idea of why/how the physiology of the whole organ works. And it definitely makes pathology much more intuitive when you study it.

😡 at the whole premise of this thread.

I'm actually really curious to hear this answer from a path resident, but did you like Histo initially? Everyone I know who's interested in path told me they thought histo was an "okay" class but only really got into the class when they had pathology to compare with normal.

ughhh....histo was the bane of my existence during organ systems. I'm sooooo glad it's over. Although...and I really hate to say this...I wish I hadn't blown it off so much, because nothing in path lab is looking familiar. Oh well! :barf:

Hahaha.... was just taking a quick break from reading Ch. 13 in Ross (and trying to stay awake) when I saw this thread, great timing.

I wouldn't say I like histo, but it's not too bad. It's mainly trying to get through stuff in the book that's annoying. You can pretty much get by on the lectures here alone, but at the least it helps to study the clinical cases and plates in the chapters, and they'll throw in some questions that come from the text so if you want to nail those then you need to do some reading.

But, I'm even less thrilled about embryo.....

I didn't like histo, in large part because I saw it as completely useless. I could not distinguish between the vagina and the esophagus on the final. I challenge you to find a clinical situation when I can't figure out which end of the woman I am looking at that can be resolved with a microscope.

i enjoyed the molecular bio aspect of it.

hated the picture recognition component

everyone at my school loves histo. The department gave great reviews and bought the class donuts on saturday mornings, so that was cool. beyond that, I just couldn't get excited about it. But now that I'm in second year, I wish I had learned more because of path. I actually think path is interesting, and it builds on histology. So if anything, learn it so when you get to something more applicable, you'll have an easier time understanding it. My two cents.

Everything looks like Owl's Eye Nuclei to me!!!! I hated histo passionately. Path is more fun!

Histo sucks. Just get through it and you will never have to know it again unless you go into path.

Yeah that's probably true. You also spend the first couple of days trying to figure out how to use the microscope with both eyes. Of course, these days most of you probably don't even use microscopes in class anymore, right? sigh.

I liked histo a lot better than micro and biochem! But I agree it's tough at first to get a handle on because everything is so new and the only thing most people have to compare it to is a poorly drawn image of a generic cell (probably from a plant) from 7th grade biology class. But the key is (as with everything in med school) to not blow it off and only treat it like you want to know enough to pass the test. You don't really learn anything by studying for the test that persists with you for more than a couple of months.

I loved histo so much in undergrad, I became a TA for it. Now that I'm in medical school, I'm liking it just as much.

What did it for me was the beginnings of exploring the microscopic anatomy, the inner-workings of why certain cells have structure and the related functionality of those structures is fascinating. I know the beginnings of histo can be kinda boring, but I simply loved the kidney and GI parts of histo so hang in there, you might find parts you like.

Who else hates histo?

This Guy

i used junquera and it was not a much difficult one....i had problems in identifying slides that i still have......but with time its becomming better.the basic thing is i think you should spend more time in laboratory.

You were in histo class on Saturday mornings? Wow.. great reviews and love would not be my first thoughts about that.

I know I should read through the other responses, but it is late and I need to get back to Histo. Try using the Ross/Pawlina book when Dr Pawlina is teaching it. He is actually an amazing teacher though, so I ended up loving his class.

He is sneaky too...he sometimes gives us really difficult quiz questions and when the class complains about them ("unclear", "to objective", etc), he tells us the questions were actually from a previous year's Boards.

I absolutely hated histo during first year. I thought it was a complete waste of time. During 2nd year path I found it ok-- I enjoyed looking at smears of leukemia and prostate cancer, etc. At that point I still hadn't thought about path as a potential career. 4 years later, here I am.

Not true at all. A lot of subspecialty boards (Pulm, GI, Hem/Onc, Renal) have some form of path/morphology on them. We routinely have GI, Hem/Onc and Renal people down to look at slides. If you are thinking of doing derm-- trust me, you will be intimately familiar with dermpath.

To everyone taking histo-- I focused on the functions of the tissues that we were studying, which made it much more like physio and a lot more tolerable at the time.

Histo in my opinion is rather interesting. The hard part is what you describe: that the lectures have too little information and the books way too much.
We have a woman who speaks very, very wierdly and it's extremely irritating. She almost punctures one's tympanic membrane with her voice.

I really enjoyed histo, but most of my class hated it. We had an extremely well organized professor with very detailed notes. He did a great job of pulling in anatomy and biochem to help tie everything together. I felt I learned more in histo than many of my other classes (and mostly info you wouldn't necessarily consider as histo). As other posters have mentioned, I think the key to really benefitting from histo is to try to focus on the function of the tissues as you study it. That way you remember everything better.

I love histo. I think its important to know what "normal" looks like in the scope. I hate my histo text, but I love the Wheater's Atlas, its so helpful

Oh I absolutely love histo. I'd be ok if med school were 50% histo with a smattering of other subjects. It's so fun seeing small stuff that you can't normally see. You can learn so much without asking any questions or touching anyone.

I use some online microscope program my school references. It's great practice. The lectures are boring but I skip them.

I wonder if the same professors are still teaching it now. 😉 They seem to know what they're talking about but the material just won't stick with me so far.

I hope I like it better during second year.

My histo teacher said today at a wet lab "Histology is a bitch, but at least it's logical" .. i concur

I hate histo too! Everything looks the same especially in hema.

I hated it....i busted my ass studying for it and the exams were a JOKE. The class average was almost in the 90s.

The practical were ok....the only reason i cared was to get ready for Path. And so far, histo hasn't helped much with Path.

Our class was semester long? At the max, it needed to be like 2 months.
