Who else is M0, fully online curriculum this fall?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Me! It totally sucks but really I'm just glad they accepted me (only 1 MD acceptance). Personally I am not moving to campus mostly to save money but also I feel that It will be hard to make new friends given the current situation.

With the way things are going with the pandemic I doubt they'll bring us back for the spring semester, and even next fall is in jeopardy, I'm just hoping we get to start clinicals on time

I know that that is a common sentiment on SDN but I for one am straight petrified of starting with little to no social support in school.

But you can do this, trust me. Success is within you. If you end up struggling, plenty of us here are ready and willing to help you.

I'd recommend finding a way to get in contact with all of your classmates (groupme, facebook group, etc...) and connecting either in person or via zoom. That's what our MS0 class has done and it seems to be working well. One socially distanced cookout would likely build more connections than your standard in-person orientation anyways.

Personally I'm glad to be starting online and have the ability to structure my schedule to fit what's most efficient for me. I do hope a few classmates will be willing to do regular small group study sessions though. I require social interaction more than the average person and without roommates, that's going to be the only way to keep my sanity.

How far from campus are you?
Its a 5 hour drive for me.

The way I look at it: I still have my friends from HS and college for support, so its not like i've lost friends, just wont be making any new ones. I prefer studying alone anyway so that's not a big deal to me, but I can totally understand if it is for you.

My classes are gonna be hybrid, with lectures online and only 4 anatomy labs in person. I think small groups for some clinical skills things? So I’m Still gonna have to move out of state school for those few things.

Not sure how I feel either. On one hand, I’m pretty extroverted so I wanna make friends/go out with my classmates. So not being in lecture at the beginning could hurt that. On the other hand In my SMP I stopped going to class after a few months and did better. I’ve heard having less anatomy labs is a time saver, but I’m also a bit squeamish and was depending on it to get that resolved. So we’ll see how it goes.

Good, actually. I will fly back and forth from my home base (CA) to medical school (different state) for the required in-person things (exams etc). For sure I'm a little bummed that it will be a little more challenging making friends though.

So did you move to campus?

Yes I did, I assume at some point throughout the year there will be in-person labs or events and I don't want to have to worry about relocating in the middle of the year.

I 100% agree with this unless your school has explicitly stated that there will be nothing in person for the semester and you can save a lot of money by not moving, while still having everything you need to study efficiently. Never underestimate a school expecting everyone to be in person the minute circumstances allow for it.

Fully online but in person practicals and anatomy lab.

I almost wish we had anatomy second semester so that I wouldnt deal with possible COVID infections.

Lectures online

CBL, anatomy lab, and clinical skills in person (staggered small groups throughout day)

After one semester....

I wish it was completely online. Exams are in person with some required practicals so I fly a few times a month.

Downside: accepted the fact that I won't have any friends first year.

Reporting back after completing first semester of M1. You guys were 100% right about this. I can't even exaggerate how right you were lol.
We speak from experience lol.

Meh, having med school friends is overrated. You’ll meet some of them eventually. But you can make friends outside of med school, and honestly that’s super helpful.

Majority of my fall semester was "online" with a couple days a week of in-person but only with the same assigned cohort of 4 other students. We were fine. Before the semester started, all of us in a massive GroupMe hosted tons of outdoor get-togethers and meet & greets and made friends mostly through that and the sub-GroupMes that allowed people with similar interests to get together (e.g. hiking, board games, drinking, etc.). People have mostly made friends through those means rather than anything the school could've done and despite majority of our academic interactions being online.

Everyone in your class will be in your position and will be trying to make new friends. You will be fine.
