Like many professions, doctors run in the family. what generation are YOU?

i don't come from a long line of doctors, but it seems to run in my immediate family's genes. my mom's an RN.

Dad - internist
oldest sis - internist
2nd sis - MSIII
me - MSII

also...

oldest sis's husband (bro in law) - ophthalmologist
2nd sis's boyfriend - MSIII

I'm curious...who comes from the oldest tradition of doctors on this forum? And as an aside, there are some families that seem to create certain specialties. I know one that makes lots of psychiatrists...one that makes lots of urologists...any of those patterns in your family as well?

This can potentially be a pretty intersting thread... =]

I come from a long line of non-doctors. Father, mother, brother, sister - all NOT in the medical field. Neither are my grandparents, cousins, etc. 🙂

mother, father, uncle and aunt are doctors... my sister and I hopefully will be too... nothing further than that though.

Me a wannabe a doc who wants to date a doc. Any takers?

Spontaneous mutation for me. 😉

Father- urologist
Mother- radiologist
Only sibling- radiologist

i guess the gene is dominant if both my brother and i got it.

father- mathematician/writer
mother - artist/professional speaker
brother - carpenter (Awesome stuff, just gorgeous)
aunt - poet
uncle - professor/writer
other aunt - head surgical nurse (almost but not quite a doctor 🙂 )

my great uncle: Dr. who wrote a book about the health benefits of a 'water diet'
my other great uncle: owned a liquor store

me: can't wait to cut into something. or someoneone! hee 🙂

I'm pretty sure its all random mutations in my family. Except the writing gene. I got the fiction variation 🙂

Paternal: My great great grandfather was the physician to the royal family back in the days. My great grandfather and my grandfather were in religion. My dad is a pediatrician.
Maternal: My mom is a nurse, her dad was a physician. She has a sister who's a nurse also.
I'm MS3, my sister is studying oriental medicine, my little brother wants to become a doctor.

First one from my Dad's side to ever graduate College.

Dad: Electrician. Everyone else before him was a farmer.

First physician in the family. Anywhere. My dad comes closest - PhD in Inorganic Chemistry. Other than that - my dad was the first to graduate college ever in his family. I'll be the first child to go beyond a BS degree in my family (and I'm the youngest of four and a non-trad).

No MDs in my family that I am aware of. Perhaps I will be the beginning of a long line of doctors myself (my wife will be a veterinarian). But my parents are part of the allied health fields.

Father: Social Worker
Mother: RN

I come from a large family and everyone has been something other than a doctor so I would be the first....and I am not liking it one bit....they are already making appointments when I have not even left undergrad yet.... 😉

Pathologist- other grandfather
Child Psychiatrist-aunt

My mom's side were poor russian jewish peasants up to her parents who immigrated here, my grandfather was a shoe-maker and his wife was a homemaker. My mom was the first to go to college, she got a Masters in Education and taught elementary school. Her only sister had an associates degree in buisiness.

My fathers side of the family goes way back to 1620's here in the US, with lots of influential rich guys like govenors and buisiness men. I'm related to the Carnegies thru the marriage of my great aunt, lol . . . but as far as I know we only have on Doc . . . my grandfather was a Dermatologist and actually treated JFK's dad for skin cancer, it was all in secret since illness was seen as a sign of weakness. My dad was ADD before it was a diagnosis, and thus didn't excel in school although brilliant at building things, he had an associates of buisiness and sold yatch and sailboat parts. His brother had physician like aspirations but failed o-chem and got a PhD in psychology instead.

I am an only child so there is no sibling data.

Aunt - Ob/Gyn
Mother's cousin - Internist

(P.S. My mother is a dialysis tech.)

Father - Chemical Engineer
Grandfather - Mining Engineer
Brother - PhD English
Sister - Law

really im the first to approach healthcare at all, much less become a physician.

I guess I sort of am in the same boat as many of you.

Dad - Anesthesiologist
Uncle - Famliy Practice
Aunt - Internist
Me - Recently Accepted into DO school

Now I had a friend who is very interesting. Her family was decendant from a long line of doctors from Japan. However at some point in her family's history, that was not always the case since many of her really old ancestors were recorded on family documents as being from an old samurai family.

I guess one of her ancestors got sick and tired of the whole bussiness of killing other people and decided to became a doctor. Strange, yet interesting how the individual choices of our past relatives effects the us as decendants eh?

Mom- OB/GYN
Dad- Pediatrician
Me- hopefully will pass medical school 🙄

Third generation baby!!!

Grandfather (Mom's side) - General Surgeon/Professor
Dad - Pulmonologist
Mom - Cardiologist
Uncle - Cardiologist
Cousin - Peds
Cousin - PGY II
Me - Class of 2010! 🙂

I've got four generations of direct Y-chromosome transmission from as far back as I know. I should check to see if it goes back any farther than what is listed here.

Great-grandfather: general practitioner
His son (my grandfather): Internal Medicine in the Indian Air Force
His son (my dad): IM + Gastroenterology
Me: Ortho is currently #1 choice, but I am only M1 so it might change

Judging from this, my little brother's life is already pre-destined for him. Additionally, my mother is an ophthalmologist.

Good question. I think most people assume that I was influenced in a positive manner by my father, who was a doctor. However, he was actually really against my becoming a doctor. He kept explaining to me that it would be a long, hard, stressful journey. He wanted me to have a less stressful occupation in which I would have more free time in my life.

However, he eventually realized that this is what I really wanted and now is very supportive.

Overall, I think having a parent who is a doctor (and a mother in the health field) has helped me. I think I get my love of science and learning from my father. I grew up idolizing my mother for the compassion and kindess she gives to all her patients. Also, I learned a lot about health care (negative and positive) from my parents. Their insight definitely helped me in my decision to become a physician.

Slightly off topic but... I also found it extremely comforting growing up, knowing that my parents could take care of me whenever I was sick. My father could diagnose me in like, 5 minutes, and just knowing that he knew what was wrong with me and what would make me feel better was so reassuring.

Now that you mention it, I remember her telling me about her Rocephin and Zithromax hookup...

Wow, reading all of this makes me feel like medicine is still an exclusive, elitist "good ol' boys" club. Are we in some sort of caste social system?

Dad: Wasn't allowed to go to college
Mom: Wasn't allowed to finish high school
Me: About to graduate from med school
Siblings: None as parents weren't allowed to have more than one child

There is no doctor gene. It's more environmental that children of doctors have more opportunities and the family has resources for them to explore medicine. Kids who have to take jobs to help support the family don't have the same options.

It's like pro athletes kids. Are the kids pro athletes (like the Mannings in football) because they have the gene or is it because they're exposed to the field and they have the money so that they can play football in middle/high school, go to football camps, etc?

And don't even get me started if you believe you are entitled to be a doctor just because you're parents are doctors. This isn't India.
