Who intends to use OMM in practice?

Should have been a poll. I do not. I have used it maybe 6 times on rotations and 3 or 4 of those where because a specific attending asked me to do it on patients. I can really only think of 2 times where I actually tried it, once for a tennis elbow, amazingly it didn't work :p, but I wanted to try, and a dying patient who I felt bad for and did some thoracic outlet on which worked a little better.

100% yes. I’ve had OMT that has significantly improved my pain levels, function, and overall quality of life. It works well so I intend to use it as needed in my practice.

Just starting 3rd year but i feel like the only people who ask for OMM were coworkers or residents.

If a patient specifically seeks me out for OMT, I would do it but i don't see why that would be the case.

Idk after the talk our school gave us on how much it can increase profit by doing next to nothing? Damn I’m in. Literally run a spinal sweep, use some muscle energy or BLT, and charge that parasite insurance company. Can’t lose really

I was open to it, my partner does it and got out clinic manager to order an OMT table on the company’s dime. Patients definitely like it.

But then I remember how much I hate doing OMM.

I’m not philosophically opposed to it like some are on here. Patients like it, keep coming back for more, and it’s safer than NSAID, and certainly safer than narc’s. But I just don’t like doing it.

I'm not a big OMM person in general. Spent a day on it before Level 1 and super not pumped to have a 2 week OMM rotation next semester.

That being said, I offered to do it on the last patient of the day for a guy with pretty bad low back pain turning into sciatica. My MD family med doc said "sure, sounds like a good idea" and left me to it. The guy left feeling probably 15% better but I also suck at OMM, he was the last pt and he now at least knows how to do some stretching for himself at home.

No ragrets.

"That will be $200 to reserve the appointment, and another $200 after treatment. Should I book you an appointment for next week as well???"

Dolla bills ya'll

To seriously answer the question no. I have zero intention of ever thinking about OMM again after Level 3.

I never plan on using it in practice myself, but I’m currently a fellow and see some pretty impressive stuff happening during our OMM clinic. Specifically a guy with frozen shoulder who I, someone who is at best mediocre at OMM, was able to restore 50% of movement with only 1 day of treatment. I’m currently having an existential crisis about doing EM vs. IM vs. FM so if I end up Doing outpatient medicine I’d consider hiring a NMM specialist.

We finished our last OMM lab with a lecture on how to bill for procedures.

Might do HVLA on back and neck. But beyond that, no.

I'm no Bone Yoda.
