Just curious... who is a student rep? What company? How many obligations do you have? What role do you play in benefiting the company (and more important, how do they benefit you?!)?

Thinking about doing it next year (Platinum Performance specifically) and just want some opinions..

I am a student rep for one of the big dog/cat food companies. I don't have a lot of responsibilities. I mostly organize 1-2 lunches a year and fill out monthly paperwork that takes about 5 mins. I also attempt to get the company name out there and have been trying to come up with ideas to better do this.

I love doing it and am sad that I can't do it in my fourth year (due to time constraints). They provided me with research and information about many of their pet foods and let me make up my own mind about their food. I get paid a monthly allowance and enjoy the free lunches when they come about.

I'm a student rep for the pet trust fund that we have at our school. Same as dyachei - I try to get volunteers for pet trust events, organize a few talks, lunches, get the pet trust known better, etc. There's a yearly honorarium apparently.

I'm the new student rep for the North American Veterinary Conference (NAVC), so not really a company per se. The way I understand it, I help to set up a couple of small CE things at my school and represent my school at the conference in Orlando each year. I also get paid a yearly stipend. Not sure of my exact duties, as I have sent SIX (!) unaswered emails to our current/outgoing NAVC rep, who apparently refuses to talk to me...grrr. Ah, well. 🙂 😎

I am a student rep for one of the drug companies. I help set up some lunches and we are going to try to do a wetlab next year. It is very low key and nice money. I am also getting to go to NY, NY all expenses paid for a few days this summer for training which is not too shabby.

I, too am a student rep for one of the animal pharmaceutical companies (perhaps the same as one Fargeese? - as I , too, go to NY in July). We organize meetings: 1-2 per semester - with a focus on education not sales pitches - and try to do a wetlab each semester, but at least one per year. Not too heavy in commitments, but good networking opportunity

Just curious, how did you guys hear about these positions? Did the only advertise to the people in your class?

I'm a rep for one of the big dog/cat food companies right now, but I'd like to continue with it as some kind of a student rep once I start vet school in Fall. If not with my current company, then maybe a pharmaceutical or something different...

Anytime there's an open position at my school, emails are sent out to the lower classes (1st and 2nd years, usually). But the positions for reps didn't really open up until spring/summer of my first year (except for AAHA since that was an elected position in our class).

I'm the student rep for Natura. Been doing it for about a year and it is a LOT of work, as I was the one who brought it to campus with a little help from StealthDog. 😀 I get paid $250 a month for 10 months out of the year plus student reps get to order 2 bags of food a month instead of one. I also get first dibs on any left over food that's not picked up.

I'm in charge of sending out the online order form every month I designed on Survey Monkey, compiling it all into an Excel file, and dealing with any and all problems that arise with the order and the program in general (of which is inevitable). I also get in the food order, sort it, label it, and help distribute it to the students and faculty one day a month. We do like 1-2 lunches a year (I hear I have a reputation for having awesome lunches) and pass out stuff for various events. It's quite a bit of work (talking to some of the other reps, probably one of the most labor intensive student rep job I've come across), but can't beat the benefits of awesome extremely high quality holistic pet food. Trying to make some good networking connections as well (Natura's head veterinary nutritionist is the president elect of the American College of Veterinary Nutrition, so I'm try to get the hook up for an externship).
