I was pumped about the new movie until I heard it was pretty darn similar to the 1st 3 movies. You would have thought the empire would give up on the idea of building a "death star" by now.

I wish they would have been more creative. I guess this is what the fans want after how critical they were of George Lucas' prequels.

Logan's Run is the best sci-fi movie off all time anyways.

Oh, me and my current squeeze will definitely be going to see it and will enjoy every minute of it.

I am fortunant enough to have seen some of the original Star Wars movies in the theater when I was young. It did disappoint me to hear the new movie shares a lot of similarities with the originals. Yet another death star, deflector shields that need to be taken down, dream sequence similar to Luke's in Empire strikes back and so on. I was really hoping the story would be more creative.

The Matrix is the greatest science fiction film ever made.

I agree, The Matrix is one of its kind, until I saw "Dark City", then Matrix didn't seem original.

The new Star Wars is worse than I had feared. Finally went to see it yesterday. Totally unoriginal and the pace was way too fast. Just one action scene after another. It's crazy that Finn and Rey fight Kylo Ren in the FIRST movie. He must not be much of a Jedi if he can't kill both of them off quickly. I give this movie 2 thumbs down.

I pray that the Hateful 8 is much better.

But the original tone is fantastic. We were also calling BS on the fight though read an interesting piece that somewhat justified it.

Hateful 8 is pretty good. Saw it twice (not in 70, alas). It's very Tarantino-y.

Maybe in the next movie, they will explain how Rey magically learns to use the force so quickly. I hope so. It took Luke years.
I guess you could make the argument that Ren is in a weakened state due to killing his father and taking that blast from chewie.
Supreme leader Snoke confused me also. Who the hell is this guy?

Can't wait to see the Hateful 8. Looks like it's a long movie though at nearly 3 hours. I loved Inglorious Basterds. It was Tarantino's best film and it doesn't have the "f" word every other sentence like his earlier works.

Some of the extended universe-devouring folks have been speculating about Rey. It could always wind up being a giant plot hole but who knows.

The Chewie blast was the proposal. In previous movies, we've seen it blast multiple storm troopers at a time, hence "holding guts in with the Force" equals "not doing his best against two newbies".

Hateful Eight vs. profanity... uh... less than Django? A couple friends watching it with me called it his most brutal work, which is definitely subject to opinion.

The simplicity of getting the shields down also made me roll my eyes. Let's see...you build this great starkiller base and don't do a better job of protecting it. Guess they didn't learn a lesson from the two death stars the rebels had blown up previously.

Wow, Hateful 8 his most brutal work? Maybe I shouldn't take my squeeze with me then. I don't mind some violence, just hate hearing the "f" word every other sentence. It's one reason why I can't stand the Big Lebowski either. It's lazy writing.

I never saw Quentin's Django. I have seen the late 60s spaghetti western Django with Franco Nero. Love that movie so much. It's funny how Quentin "borrows" from movies of the past that he enjoyed.

Well at least the shields issue is a recurring plot hole in the SWU. The brutality is more of a personal opinion thing. The killings are a little more personal, so I think that's what got my friends thinking in that direction. "f" word, kinda... but it's a western starring Samuel L. Jackson, so the f word isn't the most common one. But I think it's fun taken as a mishmash of western, locked door mystery, and black comedy.

OP, you should’ve put Star Wars in the thread title. You’re not getting any more/less hits by leaving us in suspense.

Webb, there are still some people haven’t seen the movie (not me), so please put a disclaimer before revealing any spoilers! (See below)

***************************WARNING SPOILER ALERT********************

Overall, I liked the film. Despite that, here’s the critiques I had with it:

1) It borrowed too much from Episodes IV & VI to stand on it’s own really anything original. I think this was because Abrams was so worried to mess it up and Disney had so much invested in the film he could not afford for it too bomb as the pressure was so great for it to succeed (in the box office). So, he figured to copy [too many] elements from prior films because that formula worked before.

2) Putting a female lead character (Rey) was done to appeal to the secular progressives and social justice warriors. Admittedly, Abrams said in an interview with George Stephanopolous (on ABC i.e. a Disney subsidiary) when he was growing up, “Star Wars was a movie a father could take their 11 y.o. son to. I want Episode VII to be a film that a father can take their 11 y.o. daughter to.” Please…the most hardcore Star Wars fans have always been the teenage fanboys. Not soccer moms or teenage girls who are bigger fans of Starbucks and their iphones. Do you think the idea of Superman, James Bond, or the Lone Ranger with a female lead character instead would ever have as big an impact in pop culture/cinema/literature? But, I guess it’s about getting those box office sales, so whatever it takes to get the female audience in…

3) Kylo Ren started out as a bad-ass. Then, once he took off his mask he turned into a whimpering, emo dude w/ a haircut out of a renaissance festival.

Maybe in the next movie, they will explain how Rey magically learns to use the force so quickly.

I had a huge issue with this, until I heard rumors (not confirmed) that the next movie will explain that she was trained as a Jedi at a younger age, but her mind got erased as a child because Kylo Ren was killing young Jedi who were in training. Otherwise, totally inconsistent that she can master the Force in twelve seconds when it took Luke Skywalker years of training.

Supreme leader Snoke confused me also. Who the hell is this guy?

Rumor is he's Darth Plagueis: Palpatine’s former master who learned how to cheat death and presumably killed by Palpatine/Darth Sidious.

It's one reason why I can't stand the Big Lebowski either. It's lazy writing.

Dude...Lebowski is one of my all-time favorite comedies  The cuss words didn’t bother me. The Dude and others in the film were supposed to be people of below average intelligence. Hence, they tend to swear a lot as fillers in conversation which is consistent with their characters. I thought it was an original, classic comedy that had a ton off laughs and memorable characters and quotes. I think Ziehl would agree…

Anybody seen ‘The Revenant’? It has the most Oscar nominations this year and looks pretty good.

When I saw the trailor for The Force Awakens and they show Finn using a light saber, I was hoping he had the force and was the child of Lando and Leia. Billy Dee Williams wasn't even in the new movie sadly. I hope they bring him back for the next one. Lando is one of my favorite characters.

Big Lebowski is just another Coen brothers condescending movie. I grew tired of them years ago. Raising Arizona, Fargo, Burn after reading etc. I grew up and live on Kentucky/Indiana border and people of below average intelligence, like myself, don't talk that way.

It did feel like it was trying to be a scene by scene remake in some places. After the full CGI-splosion of the prequels, I was happy for the break, but want it to go in its own direction.

Ouch, I love Star Wars a great deal more than Starbucks, thanks. Love a strong female character, and did when I was a kid. Lots of younger girls want a cool action hero. Where I felt like it was getting a little too... progressive is that they kept acknowledging it (you don't need to hold my hand!), leading to some of the most uncomfortable male/female dialogue since, well, the last Star Wars movie. Once they split the couple up for a while, I was 100% on board with Rey (and Finn, though it took about ten minutes to put "droid please" out of my head). I'll be happy when a female protagonist can be a female protagonist without it being some huge frigging thing. Like it seemed to blow Han's mind despite ya know... the whole knowing Leia for decades thing and her being a general, but a scruffy nerfherding female from a backwoods hellscape planet can fight and fly? ZOMG.

3) Kylo Ren started out as a bad-ass. Then, once he took off his mask he turned into a whimpering, emo dude w/ a haircut out of a renaissance festival.

Yeah, have to admit that while I liked the movie, I burst out laughing in that scene.

I had a huge issue with this, until I heard rumors (not confirmed) that the next movie will explain that she was trained as a Jedi at a younger age, but her mind got erased as a child because Kylo Ren was wiping out the young Jedi who were in training. Otherwise, totally inconsistent that she can master the Force in twelve seconds when it took Luke Skywalker years of training.

That's what I heard too, since less the Kylo Ren bit struck me and more the force-manipulating a storm trooper in three tries thing. I was also thinking a lifetime of stick fighting would translate better to lightsabers than a blaster. I had more of an issue that it took Finn more than 5 seconds to get disarmed, even if you allow him to be the only stormtrooper that *can* shoot straight.

Love Lebowski. For F-bombs (which I don't mind as long as they're not jarring... like in Frozen or something), Hateful 8 was dropping N bombs in greater abundance because Tarantino.

It's one of the best pieces of scenery porn I've ever seen. I'm not sure where the shooting location was, but I would have happily watched it for hours in an imax theater without the characters, narrated by Morgan Freeman. That being said, it was relatively engaging if it dragged a bit, largely because it seemed to be having trouble deciding what kind of movie it wanted to be (Man vs nature, man vs himself, man vs cackling villain). That being said, the actors do an excellent job. I don't regret watching it. The sheer majesty of the wilderness might be worth seeing it in the theater.

The Revenant is just not an enjoyable movie.

Saw it yesterday with my squeeze. Scenery and acting are great but it is basically 2 hours of watching Leonardo DiCaprio suffer. If love watching people get shot with arrows/bullets, get their head crushed by the stock of a gun, eating raw meat, attacked by bears, jumping in cold rivers, then you may like it.

When I went out to check on the chickens last night in my extremely rural location, I worried I would get attacked by a bear thanks to this movie.

I give The Revenant two thumbs down.

But you forgot the most important part...

Will Leo finally get his Oscar?

I hope not. Hell, I could have done this movie. Mostly facial expressions to show suffering. I guess he does speak a little native american language but there is very little dialogue in this movie. The makeup and wardrobe people did a great job. I felt the need to go home and wash my hair and brush my teeth after watching this movie.

If you want to see a movie with nature in it go buy/rent "Into The Wild". One of the best theatre experiences I ever had was seeing that movie.

I actually couldn't stand that movie. The whole time I was thinking "doesn't anyone realize this guy has schizoid personality disorder?" I didn't see bravery in any of his actions, only stupidity. Now Pixels, that was a fine movie.

I went to see 13 hours last week. It was ok....Didn't like how one sided it was. The contract workers are made to look like badasses while the diplomats/government workers aren't portrayed very well.

The last jedi sucks. Disney has ruined this franchise. These movies make Lucas' prequels seem not so bad.

Don’t destroy it. Have tickets for friday and still excited. Successfully avoided any trailer etc. as the last 2 years.

I have to strongly disagree on that. I tried watching Lucas' prequels to see if they were as bad as I remembered and I couldn't make it through the first hour of Phantom Menace without turning it off. Just godawful dialogue, characters, and CGI. I'll take Force Awakens and Rogue One over those disasters any day. I won't be going to Last Jedi for a week or so though, I hate jam-packed opening weekends.

Do you think it sucks without seeing it already or did you attend a pre-screening?

Let's not get ahead of ourselves and say the prequels outdo the current trilogy until it's all said and done with. Episode I was the worst out of all the films. While I agree Disney has pushed their agenda since taking over Star Wars (see my above post from 2 yrs ago), I still think they did a good job in Episode VII overall despite its flaws.

Being a toddler when the originals came out, Star Wars will always have that sense of nostalgia for me. So I'll keep shelling out a few bucks to have the cinematic experience...

Totally agree, I went and saw Rogue One on opening day last year at an IMAX. And, while it was fun, I prefer less of a crowd than opening weekend or one after. What's too bad is because everything goes to DVD/on demand so quick these days, they don't keep films in cinemas as long as they used to. I remember when I was a kid a blockbuster summer/winter release would stay in theaters for 6 mo.

Episode VII had NOTHING original in it. Let's see...hide something in a droid, have Han and a crew take down some shields, blow up a super weapon. Gee where have seen this before? The dialogue wasn't very good either, especially Finn's lines.

Keep Disney, JJ Abrams away from Logan's Run! LEAVE LOGAN'S RUN ALONE :nono:

I can agree with those points about Episode VII, it was essentially a rehash of Episode IV (Star Wars/A New Hope). That being said, it was still much better than Episodes 1 through III. Although I like Rogue One better than Episode VII or the prequels.

Episode VII had NOTHING original in it.

Well then I think you may be in for a disappointment in The Last Jedi as there will be some more re-hashed themes. Strictly from what the trailers have revealed (no spoilers), here's my take:

So Luke becomes a Yoda stand in.
The young force sensitive from a desert world becomes the new Jedi.
Sith boy becomes the Vader stand in.
Said new Jedi has some sort of dalliance with the Vader stand in where hands are stretched out.
There's a new ugly as the Emperor stand in.
Chewbacca is still moaning like a git with a little space furby next as the new Ewok stand in.
Droids provide the comedic relief as before.
There's a new dashing guy as the Han Solo stand in.
More AT-AT battles.
So what's Starkiller base/Death Star part IV going to be?

Star Wars : The Last Jedi? or......

Star Wars : Lazy Empire Rehash?

The dialogue wasn't very good either, especially Finn's lines.

Seriously...? Do we really have to go there when the Prequels delivered such classic cheese as this...

main-qimg-d95d3a206e628a047012b88c5c861b94-c

There was no chemistry between those actors in the prequels and they had their share of bad dialogue for sure, although there are some terrible lines in every one of the movies really. Who can forget Leia's great line in the first movie "General Tarkin, I recognized your foul stench when I was brought on board".

I want an original Star Wars movie, not re-hashed themes.

Will not be going to see Episode VIII tonight. Full review to come later.
Kind reminder for those who do see it. If you post reviews revealing plot details, please mention ***Spoiler Alert*** for those of us who have not. Thanks!

Saw it last night at a pre-screen. I think I liked the Force Awakens better, but this was not bad. Certainly better than the pre-quel drivel (although that is a low bar to cross). There was some dragging in places but it seemed like there was more effort to develop the characters and fill in some back-story. There were a couple of suprises that I did not expect, so overall enjoyable. Worth going to after the crowds subside.

Was shocked to see Elizabeth Holmes in the Last Jedi selling a droid that can take a small amount of blood and give a midicholorian count.

Saw it friday. I didn't like it. It was good entertainment for 2.5 hours but not what I expect as a good Star Wars movie. First time - quite disappointed.

I was very much disappointed as I have been a die hard fan of the original since the early 80s. I feel it was so slapstick and disjointed I almost thought that the entire movie would be some type of Total Recall dream sequence for one of the main characters.

But the casting was totally bizarre. Like a SJW took a comprehensive checklist of different ethnic groups and just launched them into the movie into what amounted to very uncomfortable looking romance scenes. I dont understand the motivation of any of the characters in the film whatsoever and even Mark Hamill has apparently taken personal umbrage with how Luke Skywalker was treated. His character randomly drinks green milk from the teet of an alien and gets the milk all over his beard and somehow that is supposed to make sense?? Seriously??

The plot elements are who is Lord Snoke and who Rey's parents are end up being treated so badly its comical.

This is more Spaceballs than Star Wars.

100% agree. Also the scene when Leia zoomed herself back ...there were just some moments I felt it was so out of order, more like some supernatural **** rather than a Star Wars episode. Sure, it's Sci-Fi but what I always liked that things still somewhat seemed to make sense. Not this time. Spaceballs, yeah, you hit the point.

I caught it. I did a double take.

Thin sections, use the force Luke!

It's official. The Star Wars prequels of the late 90s and early 2000s are better than these sequels. How disappointing.

Hope the Matrix sequel is good. Hope Trinity has aged well....

Saw the new Star Wars Thursday night. Overall, my thought is... Meh, its OK. Certainly better than the abortion laid out in the last one from Rian Johnson.

It's pretty obvious these last 2 movies were mostly about JJ Abrams and Rian Johnson being d*cks to each other over disputing their visions of where the story was going. Rian took a huge dump on the story line JJ plotted, JJ basically undid anything of substance he could from Johnson's vision. Good job JJ, RJ's film was total garbage on almost every level, but you undid the only positive character development he did on Kilo Ren.

By the way, I tried to prepare for the film by re-watching the Last Jedi to catch up on the plot since I had not seen it since it opened 2 years ago, but it was totally unwatchable. I tried twice and never got more than half way through.

The best thing The Rise of Skywalker does is act as a palate cleanser after the huge turd Rian Johnson made us swallow with Last Jedi, but that's probably the best thing I can say about it.

Star Wars is totally uninteresting, in my opinion. Give me ST:TNG any day of the week over it.

Explain to me how The Force Awakens or The Rise of Skywalker were any better than The Last Jedi? I thought all three were garbage but at least they took some risks in the second movie. JJ promised not to play it safe and it was total BS. He played it safe and pandered. I feel bad for Johnson having to follow up rehash known as The Force Awakens.

One the best in the series
Just saw it
