This **** is top notch. I look forward to abusing the verbal section properlike after I am done with all 11 tests.

My early scores on EK 101 are right on par with my AAMC scores so its pretty accurate. To those who used to find verbal a challenge - you really should buy this book. Also save about 8 tests to do with one month remaining before the real MCAT comes up - this way you have the best material for last.

Also does anyone have any results to post after using this book and taking the real thing?

i took the april 2003 mcats and i used vr 101 for practice. on the first test in the book i got an 8. on the last 3 tests i got 11,11, 12. i got a 9 on the real thing. i think the only thing that vr 101 did for me during the test was it gave me confidence and i was able to guess on a question and just move on.
jon from ek has told me that vr 101 is harder than the real thing and that my score drop may have been due to poor testing (the people on both sides of me voided the test after physics). still, it's disappointing.
i noticed after reading amit and bushbaby's updates.... (sorry for shouting you guys out).... you guys seem to be doing these tests really close to each other. i bought that book in january for the april test and did the last test one week before the real thing.

saba

amit and bushbaby took the april exam. I don't know if they're taking the august exam but their posts regarding their ek 101 scores are from april.

Hello All,

I am thinking about purchasing the EK VR 101 book, but would like
to hear about any other books/tests people may be using to improve their verbal skills.

I took the test in april, and didn't focus very much on verbal (I actually only read the book on verbal/math from the EK package the week of the test). I scored 10 on verbal.

I am of the opinion that I just fluked out and got lucky, so I am trying to work on verbal a bit, before taking the test again in august.

Basically, I'm just looking for suggestions, other than purchasing EK VR 101 (I probably will end up buying it anyways)

Cheers,

Silenthunder

so what did amit and bushbaby end up getting on verbal?

I just bought EK VR 101 for April 2004 and I was wondering what type of schedule worked (or is working) for you guys? Should I just start in January and do 1 or so tests a week or should I start before then? I also have Kaplan tests.... Thanks.

Going to do AAMC 5R today.

so you guys think ek is harder than actual?

I think EK is a waste of time for the verbal section. They have trick questions... they have poorly constructed questions. The passages are really opinionated. Way too much in fact.

The explanations are lousy too. I think the difficulty of the verbal practice tests go from this:

AAMC < Kaplan <<<< EK.

That said, some Kaplan verb stuff is out of whack too

Good for you, mecute. I will be taking my EK#7 today. Will let you know what happened.

I keep scoring 8's and 9's on EK 101 passages.

I did EK's full length 1d: Verbal 10 (although the curve was a bit low)

I just can't seem to get a 10 on these EK 101 passages.

EK VR 101 Test 9: got a 9

ok whats the deal, I've been stuck on 9s on 101 for as long as i can remember. Though I got an 11 on 5R and 6R and a 10 on 3R. I'm taking regular AAMC 4 (not 4R, so maybe i'll try my luck at 5 extra questions 😛 )
EK 1e verbal was a killer, i think i got a 7 or an 8 and EK 3f, I got a 7. Blah all I care about are the AAMC ones, and I'm doin ok there

@mecute, how were u able to pull an 11 on a 101 test, wow, those things are a mess!!

Holy ****, the last passage on EK#7 WAS a bitch. I missed 5 out of 6 questions. I could have christmas treed the last passage and would have gotten more right. No matter how hard I try, I only seem to finish 8 passages. My EK#7 score was a 7 and my EK#8 score was a 9. But I didn't agree with at least 4 questions on the answers and explanations that EK had.

I know the aamc verbal is ambiguous, but not as ambiguous as the EK 101 verbal makes it out to be. What do you guys think?

yeah EK is like wtf???I'm like 😕 half the time, not so with the aamc ones. How are u doing on the aamc verbal
Timing is crucial to getting at least a 10 on the verbal, you have to finish. There is still time to get that right b4 saturday!!

Going to do AAMC 5R today.

I'm like borderline 11/12, and would love to get a 12 on real thing, can u tell me any extra strategies, PLS!!! 😛

Lotanna,
You aamc scores are awesome. Mine are no where close.
aamc3-6 Took this 2 months ago
aamc4-6 Took this 4 weeks ago
aamc5-9 Took this last week
aamc6-taking tomorrow
My problem is, none of my aamc tests are R 'cause I am taking them at the kaplan center. Therefore, my timing is really messed up with the extra 5 questions on verbal.

i will be happy with a 9-10 on the real thing. Any more than that, I will probably have a heartattack out of disbelief.

The 9 shows improvement, I know I do my verbal the EK method, are u using the Kaplan way?
With the 5 questions, I dont think it will be much of a big deal, are u finishing with 5 questions left? In that case, u should be fine. I'd say do at least maybe 2 more full length verbal sections alone even after taking AAMC 6, just so u can try and be consistent with the 9s. Goodluck!! If ur getting a 9 on EK tests, then u should be on track for at least a 9/10+ on real thing.

Hi everyone,

Okay, I've been practicing with the EK 101 passages, but can't seem to get above 9. For those getting 10s and 11s, What are the main techniques you use? Also, I never bought the thin EK verbal handbook so what are the main techniques that EK teach? Thanks!

Honestly I thought EK #7 was too easy (besides the last passage which had questionable "answers")

Did anyone else think it was too easy? I always thought EK Verbal was harder than AAMC but it seemed like the AAMC's i've taken- 4,5,6 all had waay harder passages than EK#7.

EK #8 is grrrrrrrrrrr (took it today)

the passages are easy to read. BUT like 10 of the questions are subtle, tricky...at least for me. Anyone else feel the same?

Yeah, I felt that some of the questions were tricky and some just didn't make sense at all. Sometimes I would look at the answer and the explanation and say "NO Way", "that can't be the answer". Still, I feel that these verbal sections are the closest to the real test of all of the practice material. Even AAMC verbal has somethings wrong with them (i.e. passages that are too long, questions that are vague, questions that basically copy the way a sentence is written in the passage, etc.)

good luck with the rest of EK verbals.

anyone here doing the columbia review verbal review powerbuilder?
those question stems are so short and i finish the test within 60 mins... why couldn't the real thing be like this?

EK requires a lot of going back to the passage to read the lines very carefully so as to distinguish between answer choices that differ by a word (the vs. an, etc) AAMC exams are more main idea and comprehensive

I really do agree, thats why I'm getting 9s on 101 Tests and 11 on AAMC exams. I actually find them easier, i dont have to go back to the passage much.

update: took Test 10 today, got a 47=10, 2 points away from an 11
By the time i got to last passage, I had like 23mins left!!! Even then I finished with 17mins left, which is insane, i usually finish with 3mins left. I even wasted 10+mins on the 1st 2 passages, and i didnt feel like i was really focusing well at first. I think the reason i flew through it was because i actually took interest in the passages today.
Anywho, maybe i might have a shot at a 12 on this mess 😛

Hi,

I just found the comments directed toward me. I don't have any specific strategies or tactics that I use, I guess I have practiced enough. As you can see, from my test history I have done better on the AAMC verbal but ironically the EK verbal exams seemed easier to understand. I took the AAMC 5R and the picasso passage really )%&#)(* me off. I still haven't reviewed it either and I dont know if I will. I just hope my latest performance on the EK 101 exams will herald a 12 for me on the real mcat verbal =)

so where is the score conversion? i was just excited about how i did on #9 but still dont know how to translate it
