Surely we have some SDNers who, when they aren't boosting their ECs by shadowing physicians and learning how to perform brain transplants, are also comic geeks. One of my favorite graphic novels ever, and hopefully the movie will be as good or better than expected (reviews are looking promising). Discuss!

A true classic. I have been waiting for this film for a while. I once had a tortoiseshell kitten named Rorschach.

Nonetheless, I am skeptical. I expect to be disappointed. I just can't imagine any director/cast doing it justice. And there's no squid.

Edit: Oh yeah. I'll be going anyway.

I am definitely going to see this. I don't really understand why they can't include the squid, but whatever. I still think it'll be good.

whose going to the mid night showing?

is it just me or is SDN being really slow?

SDN is totally being slow today.

I want to go to the midnight showing, but I need to find people to go with as the theater is too far to walk to.

And as for the squid issue, I think it'll still be ok. My guess is that it's just a bomb or something that explodes. The squid was a a little esoteric. Hopefully the rest of the original material remains intact, though.

Let's not kid ourselves, it is a COMIC BOOK. The term "graphic novel" is clearly a comic geek's last ditch effort to spare some of their dignity. Notice how they are not "graphic novel geeks"... With that said, I'll probably catch the movie on DVD - or better yet, online.

I can't remember what I've read about it... Are they keeping the Nixon-as-president-for-life thing in? Am I remembering that correctly?

Yes. The whole background story and alternate universe is intact.

Call it what you want it's one of the best novels of the 20th century.

Oh and I will be going to see the movie with cautiously hopeful expectations.

It's a genre of its own. Sure it's a comic book, but it has a rich, deep narrative that few comics can compete with. It's also printed in the form of a novel, if that helps. It's legit, trust me. There are many graphic novels out there that are more movie-like than comic book-like. Take A History of Violence for example. That was a graphic novel, and a good one at that.

type of comic book....lengthy complex storyline...artistic distinction...

Oh, I am so there and you know it!😀👍
*high five*

If only we didn't all live in opposite corners of the country, we could have an SDN Midnight Watchmen Party.

I wish any of my friends who know and care about it were around to see it with me. Reading, receiving, and gifting it was always an emotional act of bonding for me.

My s.o. is curious and interested but has never even read it. I'll have to make sure he does before we see it.

One of my supervisors at work is proud of having gotten ten or so people to read it. We often discuss geekery while I'm on shift. Not much gets done *snicker*

This was much easier for me when all my classmates, coworkers, and friends were male. Now they're all female, which is great, but I sure do miss the guys.

Is this graphic novel really that good? I want to read it but it's kind of expensive.

I haven't had a chance to read it, but it looks amazing from the previews I've seen. I can't wait!

I've waited for this moment my whole life! My gf even labeled the release of Watchmen on the calendar, but not my birthday. Sad, but exciting!

Your birthday is completely unimportant in this context!:laugh:

(Happy birthday if it's any time soon!)

I have come to accept that I am no match for Watchmen. I don't blame her though, I probably would have done the same.

(It is soon. Thanks!)

hahaha, so thats what everyone is saying... COMICS. nice. for a second there i thought watchmen was a part of some hidden genre ive never heard about. such ignorance on my part, but im glad you clarified.

I love the Watchmen too much to go see this movie.

I'm in a college class fully devoted to Watchmen right now. It's awesome!

I. Cannot. Wait.

I don't know, the trailer looks so-so. And couldn't they get a more attractive girl for that female role?

I loved V for Vendetta too, but I still saw the movie. Of course not the same by any means, but I don't think it was too bad. I mean, they're movies, it's a totally different medium.

Silk Spectre?

That outfit makes anyone ten times more attractive wearing it.

I can't believe no one mentioned this uber-awesome phrase, so here goes:

"the world will look up and shout "save us," and I'll look down and whisper, "no."

Nice title thread btw, I esp like the double meaning. 👍

*snicker* I think there are a few prospective doctors-to-be on this board who have a bit of a Rorschach-esque attitude

I love the opening where Rorschach has his little soliloquy.

they are hyping this movie up so much that i hope it is the worst movie of the year. i hope it pulls a "THE SPIRIT", which turned out to be uber lame according to ratings.

It seems like the movie has toooooo many characters and will not have a focused story line like Xmen 3.

I guess we shall find out....

I highly doubt it'll be like dark knight, which was super hyped but then turned out better than anyone expected...

That phrase is actually much more badass in the novel.

I'm excited for the movie, but am expecting to be disappointed. There's no way the movie will be able to do it justice, although I heard somewhere that the DVD will feature an extra hour's worth of film.

You buzzkill.

No, it's not perfect, but God help us, it's definitely not another Spirit.

I suggest reading the novel.

It will be really hard to match the sheer awesomeness of the book. I hope it doesn't suck, though.

What is the Watchmen? The previews make it seem really mysterious.

😕😕 The third X-Men movie was by far the worst of the three...unless you're saying that The Watchmen will be awful like the third movie...

Arguably the best graphic novel ever written. You must read it. It's cheap on Amazon right now.

Can I just watch the movie?

Also x3 was by far the worst movie in the series.

In short, it's a group of 'superheroes' in a semi-dystopian alternate universe in 1986 where Nixon is still president, etc. It actually spans several decades, starting in the forties with another 'hero' group that sort of begins the whole thing. Things change when it seems that the older heroes are being picked off on purpose.

It's hard to describe.

hahah you cant show that website yet. the movie has yet to come out right? so those votes are premature. you gotta wait until IMDB gets about 10k votes to really know how the movie is. dark knight was about 9.5/10 with 25k votes so i'm hoping i'm wrong with watchmen and it gets about 9/10 in opening week.

i suggest not reading the novel bc the movie is NEVER as good!

No, you have to read it to get the intended effect. There are so many layers of the plot swirling at the same time that I doubt they can fit it in the movie.

There are also written pieces at the end of each chapter and a separate comic within the story.

A must read.

Corvus, is that a common grackle as ur avatar?

Right, all of these are just preliminary.

I suggest reading the novel because it invariably is better, therefore providing a better experience and further knowledge of the subject matter.

Just my opinion, though.

The Black Freighter is being released separately and the voice of the Captain is Gerard Butler.
