Who will be attending Tulane?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm seriously considering it - are you going? Will you live on campus?

Not sure yet. Either Deming or off campus, honestly I'm visiting soon and hopefully will decide then.

What program did you apply too? Are you living off or on campus?

For what it's worth, I visited tulane, and it was recommended to me to live off campus, away from the med school/public health campus. A lot of students live in the uptown neighborhood and drive or take the streetcar to class. The uptown neighborhood has a lot more going on and is a lot nicer.

Good luck on your decision. New orleans is pretty great!

I visited as well and wouldn't recommend the public health area either b/c i was told by my own advisor that it is very urban and unsafe unless u live at deming which was also not worth the money

I've also heard demming wasnt that great for the amount of money.

Ideally, I would want to live off-campus, in a share with other graduate students. The SPH is on canal street, right? Therefore, do some students live in the quarter? Is it cheaper to live in the quarter or uptown?

I've never been to New Orleans, though I was going to take a quick trip down a few weeks ago to see the campus and maybe partake in a little Jazz fest. Did not work out, as flights from NY were upwards of $600 for that weekend!

Anyway, I still plan on visiting before giving them my answer. Anyone have any other impressions?

FYI - there is a group on Facebook for students looking for off campus housing, and networking etc. Search Tulane SPHTM

I took a tour of the french quarter when I was there and our tour guide said living in the quarter is really expensive and in demand..sooo maybe living uptown would be cheaper..although itd be really cool to live in the french quarter

What programs are you all planning on attending at Tulane? Does anyone know anything about their International Health and Development program and how it compares to other schools like BU, Pitt, Emory, GW

I wll be starting this fall in the MPH Community Health Sciences program. In terms of which school is the best, it depends on what you are looking for.

From what I hear, the top and internationally known IH programs are at Hopkins and Tulane, however, Emory, BU and GW have great programs and of course you can't beat their locations-internship opportunites!

Bottomline, it all depends on what you are looking for, on-going research, faculty, location, etc.

Goodluck🙂

I attended Tulane and did my MPH there. As far as living arrangements... I don't recommend Demming. It's overpriced for what you get. After 5pm most things close nearby, and the neighborhood is a little sketch to start.

The quarter seems cool, but again, expensive, parking is a nightmare, and you may get really sick of the tourists really quickly. Especially come Mardi Gras time.

Most students live uptown. I personally live WAY uptown, and it takes me 15-20 min to get to the medical district during heavy traffic, 10 minutes during off hours.

Other great areas to think about are Mid-City. It did flood during Katrina, but the area is coming back pretty nicely, and you can get some fantastic deals on nice appts out there.

Also, if you are more into the funky living, consider the Marigny, which is next to the quarter (opposite side of uptown). There are lots of cool bars and great jazz clubs that have not gotten quite as tourist-ified as the quarter.

Wherever you move, I strongly recommend running the area by someone who lives here 1st. More so than most places, neighborhoods can go from great to really bad over the course of a few blocks. You may regret renting a place in an area that seems ok, only to find you are actually living next to a crack dealer (it's happened to me).
