just wanted to start a thread to see who will be applying for 2007 and to what schools, what school is your first choice?

I will be applying for UHCO, NOVA, NECO, and SUNY.

I really want to get into UHCO!!!

🙂

If everything goes as planned with the OATS, i will apply to
UCBSO, UHCO, SCCO, PCO, NOVA
UCBSO is my first choice

😀 good luck to u!

SCCO, UCBSO, and Pacific
SCCO is my first choice

I applied to SUNY early decision and I have an interview! Too bad the majority of people who have posted have had bad experiences 🙁 If anyone has any comments or advice on how to do well in the SUNY interview, let me know! And I will be sure to post my experience for all of you guys as well 🙂

i applied for early admission also, and my stats were average. its not too bad and if anything, gives you an advantage

Hey everybody,
Great idea to get things started for next year, because applications will be due soon (in fact OSU starts accepting aps next saturday!) As for myself, I'm planning on applying to Berkeley, SCCO, Pacific, OSU and IU. I took the OAT a couple of weeks ago and got a 350 AA and TS. Has anybody gone through a pre-health committee for the letter of rec? I did it last year, when I was still considering medicine, but now I don't know if it will help me because it looks like most schools have their own evaluations letters. Any advice? Lets keep this thing going so that we can discuss any issues that come up this fall while we apply.

PS my 1st choice is USCBO

I'm reapplying this year with ICO, SCCO, NECO, NOVA, PCO, SUNY, PCO, and IU

I live like 5 minutes away from SCCO but i don't really wanna go there. I'm either hoping for either ICO or SUNY. I went and visited NY and I went to SUNYs campus, I love it and I love NY.

8 schools, that doesn't seem very economic. Where did you apply last year? What have you done to boost your chances this time around? It makes me a bit nervous now that you're applying to so many. Maybe I need to look into it more. . .

well it really depends on the person. as for me, applyin to many schools as possible (economical) would be my own advantage. to improve, i did research and im retaking the OATs end of july. i talked to an advisor and they said to apply to as many schools as possible.

I'm applying for 2007! I'm taking my OAT July 5...then applying to UCBSO and SCCO. UCBSO is my first choice so I'm feeling a lot of pressure for the OAT. ahhh!

I'm from UCSD, btw!

I am thinking of applying to NOVA, SUNY, NECO, PCO. I live in Miami so NOVA would be the most convenient but I want SUNY the most. I am taking the OAT August 1. For those of you reapplying do you know why you were not admitted the first time? I am really worried I won't get in.

Good luck. But I got a question... I thought the OAT was only offered in February and October? How are you taking it in July?

kthanks.

The OAT's are now offered only through computer. You can take the test anytime throughout the year as long as there a wait period of 3 months between the last time you took the test. By the way, taking the OAT this coming October and am applying for Fall 2007 to SUNY, NOVA, and PCO. Rooting for SUNY!

Do you know if NY resident applicants have an advantage at SUNY? I assumed that they would since it's a state school, but someone else told me that there is no advantage. And based on my statistics, since I am out-of-state, I am really hoping there is no preference. If you have any info, please let me know! Thanks

Nope. SUNY has no preference for in-staters. On their "Why consider SUNY Optometry?" page reason 16 is "SUNY does not discriminate against out-of-state residents for admission. " 👍

i hope so!! SUNY is such a nice school 😍

Yea, SUNY is not biased towards New Yorkers unlike UC Berkeley who hardly accepts any out of staters. If you live in NY for a year you can also apply for In-State tuition. However, that is what also makes the school extremely competitive for admission considering most of the students are out of state.

Hey there,

I had an interview at SUNY this past March and I found it fine. Just prepared to defend why you want to be an optometrist, having some backgroung in the profession helps. They also asked me about what I liked about New York City and what my extra-curriculars were. I was put on the wait list because of my late application and I decided to go to SCCO before hearing from them otherwise.

Goodluck!

But we do have a lot of California applicants. and since about 1/3 of incoming class comes from UC Berkeley undergrads, that leaves just 40 spots open. with a lot of CA residents trying to take advantage of the in state tution. but there is no real in state bais, so apply out of staters 😍

here is their official word, from FAQ's on the applicant website

Do you admit many out-of-state applicants? What, if any, special criteria apply?

Although most admittees are legal residents of California, all applicants are considered on an individual basis and our admissions procedures do not discriminate between residents and non-residents. Typically, around 10 non-residents are admitted each year. We do not have contracts with any states calling for admission of a specified number of students, and we do not use quotas of any kind.

I'm applying for 2007!!!
My #1 choice is ICO

Same here!

I'm applying to ICO, PCO, NOVA and UMSL. UMSL is my last choice, I really want to go to ICO! I work as an optician/technician for 2 ICO alum so I hope their LORs help!!

Im applying to SCO, ICO, UMSL, and NOVA.

I'm torn between ICO and NOVA. I can't wait to see the schools because that will be the ultimate deciding factor.

i'm applying to ucbso & scco. scco is my #1!!! iono if i should apply to suny...what are some good reasons for going there?

I will be applying for UHCO, NOVA, NECO, and SUNY.

I really want to get into UHCO!!!

🙂

I'm not applying anytime soon. I still have a long way to go. 🙁

Please let me know how UHCO went! UHCO is also my first choice! 🙂

Hi everyone, I am applying to SCO, PCO, NOVA, and OSU. I have already mailed out my application materials...just waiting to take the OAT in 2 weeks! :luck: to all!

I'm applying for NECO, UCBSO, and Waterloo. how come it seems like no one is applying to NECO this year??

i'm applying to suny, pco, sco, and ico but suny is by far my number one choice since it's so close location-wise and u get in state tuition after the first year!

for all you guys applying to schools far away from home, isn't it a nuisance to have to fly/drive all the way out there? especially since you have to bring all your bags and suitcases...

I'm not applying for '07 (i'm '08) but I'm curious as to why SCO isn't a choice for so many of you.. it's my first choice!

A HUGE turnoff for me was location. I didn't like the surrounding area at all. Yes, I know there are places like Mud Island, but that wasn't enough to persuade me to live in Memphis. I just couldn't see myself driving to that school every day.

I see nothing wrong with the school academically, but to me, location is very important (considering you are going to live there for the next 4 years).

Being in Kansas I'd definitely apply to UHCO, they have a contract seat with Kansas to get in-state tuition. Call the admissions office and they'll tell you all about it.

Oops !! I just double checked.. I think they took Kansas off the list. But, I know at least one school has a contract seat for Kansas.

UHCO's official contract seat list is: Louisianna, Mississippi, Nebraska and North Carolina

I just got back from visiting NOVA and loved it there!

But I'm applying for NOVA, SCO, and NSU in OK.

I'm applying to UW (university of waterloo)....

lol, i think i'm the only Canadian in this thread 🙂

I'm Canadian 😀

I'm Canadian too...
I'm applying to UW of course, I already applied to Indiana and think I'm applying to PCO, ICO and maybe SCO or SCCO...
🙂

I'm applying to UHCO, ICO, and SUNY.

I REALLY hope to get into UHCO!!

Good luck to everyone! 😀

I'm applying to SCCO, NECO, ICO and Pacific. Haven't completely decided on a first choice yet.

Hi,

I am applying to:

SUNY, ICO, NOVA, NECO, SCCO, PCO, IU, OSU, UCBSO, and UHCO

SUNY or ICO are probably my first choices - I'll decide when I get to see ICO but SUNY would be most convenient since I live about 10 blocks away!

I applied to 6 and it cost me almost 2 grand. save your money for books

10 schools is going to be very expensive. especially since SCCO, IU and Pacific (i think) require an interview for acceptance. since most schools require the same stats to be compatitive you might want to narrow that list down based on location.
also SUNY has rolling admissions, so apply as early as possible! good luck :luck:

chosing between SUNY ans ICO - go for SUNY! in state tution will save you tons of dough. (again more money for your books!)

10 blocks away? That's closer than me.. and I go there! Come visit =)

I'm applying to PCO, ICO, NOVA, and SCO. I'll be sending out my applications soon and will be taking OATs in September. .. 🙂 I just can't wait until I'm in optometry school .. I'm really excited about that!!.. it'll be difficult, i know but this is something i realy want to do 🙂

Good luck to everyone!

i'm applying to ICO, OSU and IU...my first choice is ICO!!

i might still apply to MCO at ferris univ. in michigan

I'm applying to SCCO, SUNY, PCO, ICO, NOVA, and Berkeley. Actually like all the schools almost the same, but location wise I'd prefer SCCO or NOVA. Visited NOVA this summer and it is really nice there.

I have applied to SUNY but am not sure of my chances of getting in: I scored a 360 TS and 350 AA on the OAT, had a 3.2 undergraduate GPA in biochemistry, have a 3.75 graduate GPA in chemistry, and the last two years of undergraduate degree I had a 3.5 GPA. I have a fair amount extracurriculars but I have only shadowed for ~35 hrs. I shadowed one optometrist, private practice, for about 5-6 hrs. a week for 5 weeks. I also shadowed another optometrist for 1 day ~8 hrs., she had a private practice in conjunction with an ophthalmologist. I am working on an application to PCO currently, but I really want to got to SUNY.

Actually for SUNY, your stats doesn't sound too shabby at all. I got into SUNY with a 3.4 GPA undergrad (no grad work), a 330 AA and a 350 TS. Probably about the same amount of hours of shadowing too.

Good luck with getting in!

Applied to SCO, NOVA, UMSL, and ICO.

Have an interview at UMSL on Sept. 29th. I want to hear from NOVA and ICO still.

i am reapplying to UCB this year. i was waitlisted for UCB, but unfortunately i didn't get in.

however, just out of curiosity, i would like to ask some questions based on the following two quotes that were posted on 03/02/06 by alferec and 06/27/06 by still_confused respectively.

Well, if you were interviewed and put on the waitlist for this year, you're one step closer because tomorrow I'll be submitting a "no" on my statement of intent to register!!! And if you're next on the waitlist, CONGRATS!!!

SCCO here I come!!!

well i gave up my spot to berk awhile ago, so that should make someone happy!

good luck

however, the funny thing is that from the first day i got the email of informing to be waitlisted to the final email before school started, all emails indicated a no change of my waitlist position. my position was remained the same through out the whole time. the school actually confirmed a no declined seat up to the end of july. so i am wondering how valid these two quotes are.
were you guys making fun of waitlisted people or you were just simply lying?
