Hello,

I just accepted my offer of admission to HSPH for the SM2 program at the Dept. of Global Health and Population after much debating between HSPH, JHU and Columbia was finally trumped by Harvard's very generous scholarship offer. But there doesn't seem to be a lot of HSPH bonding going on here (there's a little MPH activity, but us SMers are left out of that), so I'd like to see if we can get some started.....

Who else is going to be at HSPH this fall and for what programs? What are you most excited about regarding the HSPH experience?

I've only been out of college 10 months, but i'm so ready to get back in the academic bubble! 😀

Pretty much stuck between JHU and harvard SM1 with most of my heart leaning to harvard. So there is a pretty good chance i will see you in Boston👍

Hi guys, i have been accepted to SM in epidemiology (42.5) but with no funding so far, other than loans. I will not be going if funding situation doesn't change... i wonder what the chances are to still receive some scholarship from the school.

I was accepted to the SM2 in Epi and will most likely be attending. I am making my final decision between HSPH and Emory. Does anyone know how many people HSPH accepts? Just wondering about class sizes....

I will be attending HSPH for SM80 in Epi. Looking forward to meeting you all in the fall!

I deferred my acceptance from last year, so I attended the Accepted Students day last April. I highly recommend going, as that visit made a huge difference in my decision: I attended a class, talked with many current students and faculty, and learned about the various supports available to students from the school. I also learned about Harvard's innovative approach to Epi, with a huge focus on a novel causal inference approach.
Most importantly, I was able to meet in person with my advisor to follow up on previous phone meetings. Prior to my visit, I was very seriously considering attending UW instead (full scholarship for first year guaranteed). After my visit, I immediately accepted my offer from HSPH and paid the deposit. I'd be happy to give more detail to anyone who is interested - just PM me.

@Hoping4PhD: The class I attended was in a lecture hall, with about 30-35 students. Not sure how generalizable that is...but might give you some idea.

Good luck with your decisions!

@PeriEpi: When were you assigned your adviser? I was admitted to the 80 credit SM program in SHDH and it would be great to meet with a future adviser during the Open House, but I don't currently know who I've been assigned to. Thanks!

Everyone is assigned an advisor during the admissions process. A faculty member must agree to work with an applicant in order for them to be accepted. The epi department emailed me in late Feb (about a week after i was accepted) telling me who my assigned advisor was.

In my case, I made contact with another faculty member whose research interests were more closely aligned with mine (from the SHDH dept) and we decided that she would be my advisor. I guess my advice would be to really carefully look into HSPH faculty. If there is someone you would like to work with, contact them. Otherwise, I would expect that your dept will contact you soon.
