Why a MD...

I have seen my residency applicants who have done MPH. Why a MD, interested in getting into residency do MPH? Does MPH have any impact on getting into residency? What if they ask you, why did you do MPH while your interest is getting into residency? Can anyone through some light on this? I am an IMG contemplating about doing MPh. Thanks.
