I saw the poll about the worst doctors in the hospital and it really made me think about how much we criticize other doctors. Even in medical school I?ve heard students talk smack about another member of their clinical rotation group. I?ve also heard attending physicians say horrible and sometimes personal things about someone else in their field.

Now we wonder why physicians have gotten the short end of the stick from everyone else (e.g. lawyers, insurance companies, legislatures). I think part of the problem lies with us not defending our colleagues and not having anything close to a united voice.

I know that much of this has to do with the competitive nature of medicine and our sense of individualism. We compete to get into medical school and show how different we are than the rest. We compete while in medical school and during residency. But there has to be something more to it than just competition and unique identities.

I thought it would be nice to start a discussion about this topic and hear what others have to say.

screw you.

none of you know as much as I do, so be quiet 😀

seriously though, i don't think this is trashtalking is necessarily unique for the field of Medicine, i think it can be found in any field. Whether you are talking about Law or Business or even more abstract professions like Art or Music, It's just the way people are....sad, but true.

cheers

In the real world you would never be mean to a referring colleague. Residency is a whole different world. In residency, it is used as psychologic tool to blow off steam/ adapt to stressful environments.

edinOH...you friggin' cracked me up. Hahaha! Nobody gets it.

Yeah, that Quinn is a total bitch.

In instances where docs are mean to each other about half the time it's because one of the docs in the equation is a jerk (medicine has more than its share). The rest of the time it's because everyone in medicine is tired, overworked and gets grouchy when handed more work.

Sure there are a few bad apples in medicine... I suspect it's a lot less than anyother field (judging from prior work experiences). Everyone likes to gossip and degrade others to some extent... sadly it makes us feel better. My advice is quit being so frekin' PC and f-ing live your life! Every once in a while you have to strip of the facades and drop the f-bomb... we deal with life and death... that does not excuse lack of common courtesy or inhumanity, but lets get real people!!!
