I saw the poll about the worst doctors in the hospital and it really made me think about how much we criticize other doctors. Even in medical school I?ve heard students talk smack about another member of their clinical rotation group. I?ve also heard attending physicians say horrible and sometimes personal things about someone else in their field.
Now we wonder why physicians have gotten the short end of the stick from everyone else (e.g. lawyers, insurance companies, legislatures). I think part of the problem lies with us not defending our colleagues and not having anything close to a united voice.
I know that much of this has to do with the competitive nature of medicine and our sense of individualism. We compete to get into medical school and show how different we are than the rest. We compete while in medical school and during residency. But there has to be something more to it than just competition and unique identities.
I thought it would be nice to start a discussion about this topic and hear what others have to say.
