I certainly don't mean anything esoteric by 'intelligence', just common usage. I guess I wonder how YOU are defining it if you feel that it's innaccurate (or worse, an insult) to defer from applying this adjective to folks who are mentally ******ed ??Originally posted by chloe5
I wonder about how you define "intelligence."
The child was not getting a prize 'even though he was inept'; I assume it was awarded for achieving a Boy Scout goal, based on the picture. The child was probably receiving recognition of legitimate accomplishements. Rather, the implication was that the poster got a prize for being intelligent. The characterization of a person who is recognizably not intelligent then demonstrates the sarcasm behind the 'award'.And further, I felt the picture was subtly implying ineptitude, that the kid was getting the prize even though he was inept as a way of saying "okay okay you win."
It's like arguing that someone is skinny, then posting a pic of, say, Kate Moss accepting an award, and saying, 'okay, okay you win. Here's you accepting your award". No one is insulting Kate, she IS skinny. They are just using her recognizability as a skinny person to make their point.
That's how it seems to me.
