My wife is from the Philly area and would like me to try to get into Temple to be closer to her family. It seems to me like their pre-req's are so different than most schools because they follow this University CORE program. I read something on their website that they are changing this CORE program to a more general ed program like everybody else soon. Does anyone have any info on this? I don't want to be forced to go to an extra semester of school to just fulfill these pre-reqs that aren't required anywhere else. Thanks.

First off--do you already have a B.S.? If you do, then admissions will give you a bunch of leeway with their CORE courses.

However, if you do not, then yes, they do have very particular prereqs. They will work with you to see if courses you have taken can be substituted for their CORE classes though.

I hope they do change their pre-req requirements to be more general (although I haven't heard about this). I made numerous calls to admissions over the past couple of months to get credit for some of their courses. I would suggest calling up admissions to see if certain courses you've taken already will meet their CORE program. Otherwise, you might get stuck taking several courses over their summer sessions before you start. They did say that the Studies in Race CORE course can be taken in your 3rd professional year. Also remember that if you have 3courses of a foreign language then you don't have to have two courses in international studies. However, if you do not have a degree already, you must have Macroeconomics (either macro or micro is accepted if you already have a degree--at least that's how it worked this past year). Also they didn't accept psychology courses as a substitute for any of their CORE courses.

Give admissions a call. See if they can work with you and if not, then you'll just have to decide if you want to go the extra sememster to fill up the pre-reqs.

Was there anyone in the admissions office to be of particularly good help to talk to? I've seen a few different names that they list to contact about questions with admissions.

Our Office of Admissions is happy to provide academic advising for pre-pharmacy majors.

We assist applicants with their prerequisite course selection and process their files.

For information, contact Ms. Joan Hankins-Massaquoi,
Administrative Assistant for Admissions

That is from their website--she's the person that makes the ultimate decisions about pre-reqs. I would call her. She might be busy tomorrow--orientation and all. But I would definitely give admissions a call.

I was planning on applying to Temple soon, but I can't really remember what their pre-reqs are. I hope they're not too much different from the courses I've taken already. I'm gonna have to check it out though soon now that you said about this.

I really didnt think Temple's requirments were "so different" compared to other schools. Gen chem, Bio, physics, orgo and economics are like the main pre-reqs for any pharmacy schools along with the english proficiency requirment. Those are as basic as you can get. Besides that, just take care of few humanities then you should be set.
I felt the admin people at Temple are really nice and helpful and they try their best to help u minimize the number of extra classes u need to take to finish your humanities.
Give it a try, give em a call.

Yes, the admin people at Temple are very helpful. However, the humanities they require are pretty specific and certain courses won't cover them--it's much easier if you already have a degree. It's definitely worth a call to talk to them and see if they will accept the courses that you either have taken/plan to take.

Well I guess it is good that I'm finishing my B.S. in Biology before I plan to attend pharmacy school. I hope it helps a little with these humanities courses. I will call up Temple and ask them about it too. I had just wondered if anyone had similar problems with these pre-reqs. On a side note, how is Temple as a school? I didn't have the chance to drop by when I was in Philly this summer.
