The leadership of the AOA is selected by small group of all white elders in the AOA. No surprise here. Nobody elects the leadership, that's all a smoke-screen.

I was looking through the aoa leadership/board of trustees and couldn't help but notice that everyone is white.
Why is that? Doesn't seem very representative in my opinion.

William G. Anderson gave our White Coat Ceremony speech at LMU. He was a past president of the AOA and he is black. He also served on the Board of Trustees for 20 years.

On a side note he actually knew Martin Luther King and worked closely with him on the Civil Rights movement as well.

Really?.... Most doctors are white so....

Better question why aren't most AOA leaders ripped? I mean with all that doctor knowledge they should be soooo razor....

But the current board. It's so ... un-diverse.

A bigger question is why does it matter? It won't have any impact on you.

How come The Potato Heads are not white?

Only in this PC country is diversity=skin color.
Isn't there some diversity just by being of a different skin color? No matter how educated a white person is, they don't understand what it's like to be black in this country (and vice-versa), so maybe it makes sense to have people of different racial backgrounds, in a racially diverse country, represented in all professions.

Why are most of the leaders in China.. yellow? (I am Chinese so I can say this and don't ask for pics, I am too good looking)

When I clicked on this link, I expected to see a board of like 7-10 people. When I saw 3, I was like... hmm... I now see the point of this post. For the time being, white people constitute a majority in the US and are even further represented in the DO profession. Its not really a surprise that the 3 current AOA leaders are white.

Wait, so do you believe all white people have the same background, regardless if we are from Ireland, England, Scotland, the US, etc? We all get lumped into the generic term "caucasian." Why is race the most important determinant of "diversity?"

I don't think he's talking about the lack of diversity of white people, simply that white people don't really know what its like to be non-white in this country, by virtue of the fact that they are white. It didn't sound to me like he was making a judgment as to what the most important determinant of diversity was.

But its kind of funny that 3 of the white groups you listed are all in the UK (granted Ireland could refer to southern Ireland), and are basically people of very similar lineages. I mean you could have said Russian, French, Italian, and probably made a stranger point.

Click on the side bar/link where it says "board of trustees" there's like thirty names.

Regardless, why does this even matter in the slightest? If I was to know this fact, I would just shrug and think "oh, well that's nice".

Why does it matter if white people don't know what it's like to be non-white? The same is true for every race.

of course this is true for every race. i think the reason it was brought up to point out that race can equal diversity

I'm not saying that, but can you really say that, based on historical context, that black vs. white Americans is equal to the difference that an Irish white experiences when compared to a Polish white in the US? Either way, my point wasn't that we needed more blacks in AOA or that white people don't experience diversity. My point was that race is a [big] factor of diversity, not necessarily the defining factor of diversity.

It does and it doesn't. I would like to think that most people regardless of race have some sense of respect of everyone regardless of skin color and it's only a few in every group that are extremists creating tension. However, it is well documented that minority groups do have influence and their work usually affects their own group. The same can be said about how research into women's issues dramatically increased with women joining academia. In a country where Hispanic and black Americans are on the rise, it only makes sense to have physicians representative of the society they treat.
