Why is it so bad that some premeds aren't motivated by curiosity

Nothing in the world says your actions should only be motivated by curiosity if you were to become a doctor.
I feel it's perfectly okay for one's reason of studying something, doing some extracurriculars, etc. is not because of interest or curiosity but of something else, like chicks and money.

haha. What is the point of this?

medical school is a long, roundabout way to get chicks and money.

In fact, for most people, the road to medicine takes up so much time that they can't share a good conversation about indie music or such with girls, and they hardly have time to party.

You will get money and girls, after you are around 35 and at the decline of your sexual function.

So if you want money and chicks, medicine isn't the best occuaption.

Because if their reasons are chicks and money, they aren't very bright. There are faster and easier ways to get both.

I decided give up those to become a doctor in US. I could easily return to my home country and become an exec at my stepmother's company. Although I'd have to improve my reading/writing.

Case study: Donovan

Donovan is a frat guy, when he first joined, he used to study his BCPM stuff everywhere, even during the meeting.

Then we convinced him that there's faster way to money and chicks withoutt the premed stuff

Now, Mr.D has a rich girlfriend who gives him a car and allow him to drive random chicks around.

lesson learned: If you just want chicks or money, find a rich girl.

such as? please do share

Investment Banking
Acting
Music
Internet startup companies
Mathematics, enter the stock market and write equations/models
Statistics
Marry Britney Spears

etc.....

Most of these can be done right after undergrad, although none of them are easy per say, some require talents/genetics, others require work, and the last one require Kevin Federline

If you are motivated by chicks and/or money to enter medicine please tell the people this in your interviews.... but if you are saying that you enter some extracurriculars to attain chicks/money then that is more plausible. Not everything in your life has to be motivated by curiosity, some things can just be because of hidden factors (they may be chicks/money, or something else entirely).

Too bad those are all way harder than becoming a doctor.

What exactly is this "something" you're referring to? Medicine or something more specific like Kama Sutra?

not necessarily harder. Some people are more gifted than others in certain qualities. Investment banking isn't hard either, it just requires someone willing to work hard, for the sole purpose of making your client, and yourself, alot of money. Oh, and a good undergrad/internship

Yeah, tell that to all the babes and greenbacks that are drifting about when you're in a pile of empty 40's and placing the barrel of a .357 against your hard palate...

Now, seriously, why don't you quit trolling and get back to gabbing about your period with your galfriends?

This is why the healthcare sucks in this country. And this is why, I hope, not everyone gets into a top medical schools (or any at all) despite his/her numbers. Nothing wrong with being motivated by money, but if you have no curiosity at all, I hope you never become (at least my) doctor.:diebanana:

Go out to the average night club and see who has the chicks and money and is still young enough to enjoy either. I promise you they aren't going to be physicians. And you will also see quite a few of your college buddies with money and trophy wives long before you get through your residency; you will be kicking yourself while they are limo-ing about town and you are spending the night disimpacting a rectal vault.

You need a certain level of motivation to get through med school and then residency. When you are getting up at 4am because a resident wants to squeeze rounds in before a 6am meeting, and you know you aren't likely to get out of the hospital before 6pm and then will still have stuff to look up/read for a presentation you are supposed to do the next day, and this schedule repeats itself over and over again for months, I promise you that thinking "someday I'm gonna have chicks and money" isn't going to get you through. Actually being interested in what you are doing, and the presentation topics you will be doing, and what is going on with these patients you are rounding on helps a LOT. seriously.

These threads are always hilarious.

Are people really willing to go through (a minimum of) eight years of atrociousness in order to have sex with women who have dreams of becoming gold diggers? Peons at best.

Does anyone else agree with me that limos are lame? The typical stretched town car doesn't do anything for me. Also I love to drive and don't particularly appreciate being driven around. I could probably deal if I was in the back of maybach 62, but otherwise I just don't get the allure.

is there anything wrong with it? ethically? not really. Echoing what Law2doc said, it's not that it's wrong or reprehensible, it's that you are going to have such a rough time of things if you don't somewhat enjoy medical science and clinical practice. I don't find economics interesting, so I HATED studying for economics tests in introductory courses -- so much so that trying to imagine majoring in it and then getting an advanced degree makes my head explode. That's why we can't understand wanting to get a medical degree unless you like medicine almost in its entirety.

I promise you that being a rich and successful musician/actor is much more difficult than being a doctor, and, more often than not, has nothing to do with talent.

(not more difficult in the work itself but in actually becoming successful)

I own an Internet based company. Hardest thing I've ever done in my life. Organic chemistry was a joke compared to trying to make my company profitable.

Quite apparent it didn't become google.

Google? The success of my company depends on Google searches, lol. I've kept this a secret since I started posting on SDN. Nobody I went to college with knows about my company as I kept it a secret. The marketing is the most difficult aspect of everything.

But don't you want people to know about your company? Isn't that how you get business!

Well if you told some people about it, might help with the marketing aspect, no?

I'm not going to explain to you why since you like calling people names.

Hey man, you take what you can get.

Just kidding. I'm totally going to try to marry a neurosurgeon... or maybe a managing director at a bulge bracket bank.

Business cycle. In 10 years when I'm finishing up my residency in neuroradiodermatoplastic surgery, the people at Goldman and DB will probably be sitting on fat wads.

I'm watching gangland on history channel and they're talking about the Chicago gangster disciples, most of whom were motivated to join because of chicks and money.

I propose you join a street gang and make money asap w/o having to learn anything!
Just sell drugs, shoot people and make BANK!!! seriously, quick easy money. and then the chicks flock since you have $$

Make porno.

There are really only a couple dozen people who make decent money acting in that industry. The rest barely cover their coke habits. The guys (who only make a fraction of what their female counterparts make) go through a grand a week on Viagra alone. And probably another couple hundred on clinic visits and antibiotics. The money is mostly in production and distribution, and only a handful of big companies are thriving thanks to porn being in such great supply free on the net.

#1 "googled" word on the internet: sex
#2: Jesus

Okay heard this by word of mouth, but it was too good to pass up, even if it isn't true (I have a hard time believing it is).

Yes, that is true. Anyways, the average male performer makes around $500 per scene. I think the female performer makes around $1,000 per scence.

Thank you, Buzz Killington.

Sexism! Men are earning $0.50 for every woman's $1.00! I'm taking this to my congressman! I thought we as a nation had gotten past such blatant discrimination!

You seem to be well versed in this industry! Hahahahahahahaha.

"make porno" doesn't necessarily include the physical aspects. A few months ago I was researching what is the most profitable website to create. I read about AdSense from google, etc, but I was bewildered to find out that the most profitable websites are porn-related ones. I only gave it a cursory consideration and then quit. It would be truly ignominious if family or some friends found out about that. Plus there is the danger with medical schools. Although I disagree that making a website and just updating it a few times a year is as bad as some of the pre-meds doing dominatrix shows at night clubs.

Amen to that. I thought girls were going to be impressed that I was going to be a doctor, but they're not; meanwhile, med school takes up so much time that I've lost the ability to make interesting conversation or pursue hobbies that might attract women.

really? I found most surgeons in the ER pretty hot with their caps on. But too bad, many of them are balding. :eyebrow:
