Ok, so excuse me for intruding.

I'm thinking about going into medicine as a Nontrad, and I'm finding I really enjoy organic chemistry. Someone asked me the other day why I wasn't considering pharmacy and I didn't really have a good answer. I figure I should give everything a serious look before dedicating myself to second career.

Can anyone point me to some resources regarding the whole training process, application procedures, etc compared to allopathic medicine?

Also I'd be interested in various perspectives of what is drawing you to pharm.

Thanks all!

This is a good starting point.

my perspective- pharmacy is dying. stay in medicine. this view is shared by a majority of my classmates

If the sight of blood doesn't make you faint or puke, I would go to medical school. (MD not DO) Good luck! You won't find a job in pharmacy if you graduate after 2013.

Oy! 🙄 :meanie:

I chose pharmacy because of the work hours, environment, and low divorce rate in pharmacy school.

(I'm also a non-trad)

what work hours? zero? ya those are cool. My dean was just talking with some buddies of mine- he said he doesn't get why the p1s and p2s are in school still.... since pharmacy is freaking dying.

ya- he obviously didn't- but he was emphatic-

I am surprise he was so honest. 99.99999% of deans out there will still say there is a shortage of pharmacist just to get more naive students to apply and spend 200K on a useless degree.

shhhhh.... don't tell the pre-pharms----- they all know how things REALLY are... tons of jobs...just gotta work hard and set yourself apart! then you'll get a job for SURE!!! 🙄. I'm just a pessimist..... I was talking to a kid who, for some bizarre reason, is planing to apply to pharm school. I said dude- just put those pre-req's towards some other field that is not dying. He told me he was "in too far"...HAHAHA- hadn't even applied yet. He said he'll just set himself apart. gooooood answer

If you honestly believed you would never find a job, you wouldn't be in school right now. I honestly don't believe you didn't know what you know now back when you were applying to pharm school. These problems in pharmacy did not just creep up out of nowhere one day. Anytime there is a shortage in any career TONS of schools will use it as a business opportunity to make fast cash. You believe you will get a job and you just want to close the door behind you to make it better for YOU. Nice to see someone so altruistic and compassionate, I mean selfish in healthcare.

I didn't do my research in 2008 when I applied to pharmacy school so I really did NOT know that pharmacy was a dying profession. That is due to my own fault, yes.

If you GRADUATE RIGHT NOW (this second), you can get a job if you relocate to a very ghetto/rural place. Or if your dad is the CEO of Walgreens and you have amazing connections. So yes, RIGHT NOW pending that you are willing to MOVE or you have AMAZING connections you can get a job.

HOWEVER, pharmacy's job outlook is getting WORST AND WORST AND WORST every second. Every year it is getting harder and harder to find a job....am I 100% sure that I won't get a job? No, b/c I will graduate pretty soon...but am I 100% sure that I will get a job? No b/c the market is just that bad. It's getting WORST every second! Like I say if you graduate RIGHT NOW, you still have a very small hope. But if you graduate 5 or 10 years from now? You are royally ****. That's how it is. So for those that are applying now and will graduate in 2016? you are fu*k to say the least.

hahahahaha.... No, actually things did change VERY fast. When I was first accepted they were still giving out sign on bonuses. In the past 5 years the number of schools has doubled... so yeah- it did actually change rather quickly...as far as shutting the door behind me...you nailed it. My ultimate goal is come on this very forum and post things in hopes of getting ~2 people to drop out. That should secure my future in pharmacy. I hate being so guilty- it's good to get that off my chest.

My only connection is a close family friend who is a recruiter for one of the big chains. I hope he still has the job in 2014!!!!!! Business jobs are so replaceable!

No wonder you are so optimestic about getting a job. YOU have someone that will hand you a job upon graduation. That's good for YOU, but for the rest of the people on here without any connections they will be royally screwed.

I am glad you got a guarantee job upon graduation. That's why you have that attitude that explains a lot. I didn't think it would be possible for anyone to be that naive/dumb about the poor job lookout for pharmacy. That finally explain it. You mean YOU don't have to worry about the job market, but that's only YOU.

But I still recommend you look into retail before you get a job there. If you think hospital is bad, you won't survive retail. That's a guarantee.

Anyone got the numbers? I think it is something like 20 new schools in the past five years. Which is about double I suppose, as long as you don't bother with doing the math.

92 in 2005; 119 now, plus 5 that are not yet accredited (so 124 total).
The biggest increase is in private schools, no surprise there.

i shouldnt have said doubled. my bad. ya- our associate dean just gave a lecture I sat in on to the deans council, and yeah the number is 24 I believe.

If you're so emphatic about pharmacy being dead, why not drop out and pursue a thriving field? You'd more than make back your money, and you'd only have a few years of pharmacy debt behind you.

You're discounting an entire population of people and basically saying they're dumb for wanting to pursue this career in healthcare. Is that the kind of empathy they teach at your school? Pharmacy is not dead, though the kind of people who preach this ideology might find themselves not getting hired or not moving up in their position. Negative people are usually pretty easy to pick out. And like you said, there are more graduates each year, so I think it's an understatement to advise everyone to stay positive and try to find the job they want.

This just isn't true. Might serve ya some good to move there for a little bit, though. 😛

This is harsh, even from you SHC.

It's obvious that there is an alarming trend in new school openings, and you'd be wise to keep abreast of it. I'm pushing for APhA to take a formal stand on it since they're opening yet ANOTHER COP in North Texas, making for 7 schools here. 🙄

But to mock those of us who say you should try your best to differentiate yourself to land a job? What other advice should we give? I'm 2 years into my program and I can tell you there are people in our classes who may have a high GPA (or might not) who do diddly squat outside of class. When you go to hire that person, you'll see a blank resume save for a GPA and mandatory rotations/ service learning hours.

I still believe pharmacy is a viable field. If you see a pharmacist and say "I'd like to do that job," what's to stop you, save a few negative comments on here?

Did the alcohol kick in halfway through this post? Or were you on a phone or something? Your posts are usually at least more grammatical than this... 😕

Pharm B, One thing you have to remember: Us non-trads already know what it is like to have to bust our arses to achieve something that we want. And it goes double for people like you and I that have military service.

I would venture a guess that the vast majority of these 19~23y/o have no clue what it is like to have to dig deep within yourself and find the will power to push on. Unfortunately, most of the naysayers have never been in the real world yet but they all seem to know what the work conditions are like. Personally, I think the friends that have been RpH for a few years now know better than some student.

You know what? They might be right and it may be hell finding a job when I graduate in a few years. So what??? I have been there more than once before and I survived... I will survive again if need be...

The funny part is, if it is so F ing bad out there for these peopl, why not drop out of school and save yourself the trouble? Go to another program.

Poor girl, she's probably really tired. Being pretty and smart can take a large toll on a person.

👍 Agree with the real world comment.

the outlook for pharmacist isn't dying, but instead growing, so yea the economy maybe be fudged up, but people will always be sick so doctors and pharmacist will always be in demand. just like a job with computers, in a world where computers are 90% of everything, those kind of jobs will be in good demand.

here's some proof
