So I had a friend ask me the other day "Why do you have to take physics to get in to dental school when it isnt on the DAT?" I thought that was a good question! Why do we have to slave away with physics?

i was wondering the same exact thing. perhaps d-schools want to keep up with the same pre-reqs as med schools? i see no other reason. at least med schools test for physics on the mcat, meanwhile for us its just a time filler and then we dont need it anyway. it does suck.

Maybe it's just another hoop to jump through? So as to thin out the potential applicant pool even more?

I'm in physics right now and I'm not too happy 🙁 Just got my first exam back and I'm actually *OK* with a B- lol 🙁

I asked myself that every day during the year that I took physics . It does seem like it's just another hoop to jump through.

i dont agree, math or some form of a qr is given on every standarized exam so i believe the DAT needs to have one too. Meanwhile, physics doesnt seem to serve a purpose (at all in my mind.)

it's an important science that all health professionals deemed qualified to provide clinical care should have at least a basic understanding of. i think it should be added as a section on the dat.

Without knowing the basics of physics taught in general UG physics; I would doubt if the person knew chemistry or biology either. They go hand in hand. Better to lay the foundation before you build the house.

IMO (and some will disagree) but there are alot of occlusion forces in the mouth. Restorations break left and right if your not following proper restoration methodologies

I dunno guys, having basic understanding of mechanical physics lets me grasp classes like dental materials (which is 60% physics, 30% chemistry, and 10% common sense) and intro to operative dentistry a little better

I disagree. Although I do not like physics, I’ve seen remnants of it in bio and chem classes. Same with bio and chem in physics. If your professors know how to integrate, it’s actually kind of nice, because you don’t feel like the information was completely useless.

yes i see your point and maybe it depends on the school. my school didnt seem to integrate it enough that it matters, plus the DAT doesnt cover it. so i guess i see less value than you do. but its OK, as long as you get something out of it.

My physics teacher is from Russia and is super easy. Love that guy, breezin through it.

& I dunno why they require it, but I think it's good to have a general understanding of what physics is/how to apply it. Can be fun to think about sometimes.

lol majority of physics teachers are Russian because that was a major emphasis of education there. It was a really science focused country, a lot of engineers as well. But a very bad economical model.

Dentalworks hit the nail on the head. The only time I really use it is in Dental Materials class. You could probably make it through the class with very little physics but it definitely helps if you have a good understanding of the basics.

I also thought there would be no use for it until the teacher starts talking about formulas from physic class 😕

I'm surprised most of you geniuses couldn't figure this out like MrAvicii and DentalJedi. We all know among the 4 science pre-reqs (bio, gchem, ochem, physics), physics and ochem give students the hardest time. Only the most intelligent/analytical and/or diligent students can get A's in them. Almost anyone can get A's in first-year bio. Just read the textbook and look at your notes. If you do this enough times, even a turd will eventually figure it out. But these same turds can study physics/ochem 24/7 for the next n months and still be confused. These courses separate the men from the boys and that's what schools want to know. Who's the contender out of the pretenders in the applicant pool.

Very dependent on where you go imo, but I agree in general. Not only that, but if you are not remotely interested in a topic, it is harder to do well because it is so hard to care….I mean seriously lol.

(ive never heard of anyone getting rejected from d-school due to their physics grades.) even my friends who went to MD or DO schools took physics elsewhere and mastered it themselves for the MCAT. And please dont compare orgo to physics. they are different animals and appear easy/hard to different folks.

ps I got an A in physics but an A- in orgo, am i genius? nope but im smart enough to know what to focus on for my DAT exam.

i admit when im wrong. im on sdn during my school work time so mistakes happen. me and cedar have made up since then i have defended him when he was in a bad situation.
