why some residencies over others?

I've heard that residencies like dermatology, radiology, and anesthesiology are very competitive because of the lifestyle. Apparently, you have easier hours and you make more money. However, I would not pursue a residency for these reasons. I am actually interested in Family Medicine.

Is there any truth about what I've heard?

Yeah. Those are generally the competitive ones. Surgery as well. Not sure how competitive anesthesiology is... but I'm sure it's one of the top ones as well.

I think the good lifestyle is just a large plus, but I think a lot of people are also genuinely interested in that particular field. But yah, I would be reluctant to go towards a field with extremely eccentric hours like with general IM. I would simply feel uninterested in my work and be way overstressed. Not to mention I think I'd prefer to spend more time with family.

Those should probably be your top 2 concerns at this point. Thinking about residencies now is like the astronaut on earth thinking about which direction he wants to walk when he gets on the moon, he needs to get there first.

I wouldn't be surprised if they actually plan out the first step before launch. Just one of the many beauties of our halted space program...

And yes, I am VERY bitter about the shutdown of the space program. 😡

The fields are more lifestyle friendly post residency, the residencies themselves can run the gamut. Anesthesiologies competitiveness is like a roller coaster -- some years it's uber competitive, other years it definitely is within a lot more people's reach. Derm is among the most competitive fields. But you are going to be doing whatever you pick every day for 50+ hours per week for the next 40 years, so pick something you actually like.
