Why unfilled spots?

Sorry for the ignorance with these issues but I would appreciate if someone could help answer these couple of questions. Why are there unfilled spots at the end of the match? Arent there more medical graduates(MD,DO,Foreign) looking for residences than there are residency positions? When its time to apply for different spots, where does one find the list of all of the available residency positions at all of the available hospitals? Thanks everyone

Unfortunately, there are certain geographical areas that seem better for docs and of course some programs do not get much interest, so they end up not filling,,,

Also, not all residents rank every program where they interviewed. Conversely, not all programs rank every interviewee either.
