Hi all. 🙂 I am a high school senior. After much thought, shadowing and hospital volunteering, I have decided to apply to medical school when the time comes. My plan is to major in Chemistry, as eventually becoming a P.h.D chemist is my plan B and becoming a high school Chemistry teacher is my plan C (if I fail to get accepted into medical school that is). There is quite a bit of a math requirement for the Chem major. I was thinking of taking Calculus with Analytic Geometry I at a community college this summer, then going much further in Math at my four year university, where I will be matriculating in the fall. I am aiming for a math minor. My question is, since your science GPA is calculated independently of your non-science GPA, would medical schools frown upon this, thinking I was attempting to mischievously boost my math and science GPA by shooting for an easier course? I am not by the way-my motivation for taking it at community college this summer is so I can afford to take fewer credits my freshman year while I am getting adjusted to college. Thanks so much for all your help!

Thanks again,
trekkiegirl

P.S. Sorry if this post makes zero linguistic sense-I had to type it real fast on my way out the door.

Get an A and it won't matter

They probably aren't going to care. Just get an A and then get an A in Calc 2 and Calc 3/Diff Eq.

I agree with whats been posted, there will be plenty of classes for you to prove yourself. Especially if you stick as a Chemistry major, I don't think one class at a CC (over the summer none the less) will hurt you.

Taking a Calculus class at a CC won't hurt you at all and taking Engineering level Calculus won't get you any extra points. Go to the CC and get your A there. Few schools require more than one semester of a formal Calculus class. If you're really worried, check the Calculus/Statistics class requirements of the individual schools you have an interest in.

Like others have said, do well and it won't matter. You're taking classes ahead of matriculation which is great. Lots of medical schools don't even require calculus anyways.
