How will a prior conviction (felony) affect the chances of entry into Dental school? Is there a section on the application that pertains to this issue? Does the question even arise during the interview? 😕 Question...quesions...(head explodes) :scared:

it is asked on the application... and if you have prior(s), you do have an opportunity to explain things.

that being said, i imagine it does hurt your chances. with the applicant pool being so competitive, i would think a felon, would REALLY need to stand out.

i imagine if you were granted an interview, it would certainly be brought up.

You need to seek the advice of an attorney.... now.

I'm going to say a felon has no shot in hell in getting into dental school. The best job I ever heard of a felon having was a butcher.

if you don't encounter problems getting into dental school, you surely will trying to get licensed.

dentists can become felons but felons don't become dentists

You actually have two hurdles. The biggest hurdle is licensure. Most state dental boards explicitly prohibit the licensure of a felon as do medical boards, law boards, nursing boards, etc. I am sure there are exceptions. You will need to explore it. Although you may get into a dental program it may all be for naught because you will not be allowed to practice. I think you need to decide what state you will practice in, get an attorney in that state, and have him inquire with the dental board in that state.
The school may not have a policy against admitting a person with a felony conviction, but they may argue that there is no point in pursuing the degree if you can not be licensed, but some may take your money any way
😎

When I read all of your feedbacks, I really felt like giving up on going into Dentistry. All of your feedbacks were great. Even though most were pessimistic, negativity has never stopped me. When a person falls that hard, all he can do is bounce back even harder.
I got convicted of "Conspiracy to commit robbery" @ the age of 17 back in '99. Me & my "so called brothers" back then were having dinner & they were discussing illegal activities & drawing up stuff on napkins; talking about making a heist. I simply got curious & joined in on their conversation. Weeks later, detectives from Orange County came to my high school & put me in cuffs. At that time I had no idea what was going on. I was just a kid who was in the process of joining the U.S. Navy. Later on in the interrogation room, I was grilled with questions about crap I barely knew about. Apparently my "brothers" actually made the heist on a computer warehouse. The one who led them was a 40 year-old woman posing as a man (she really does look like a guy). This cross dresser, whom I've met on several occasions, was responsible for a string of robberies on computer warehouses in the So Cal area back in the late 90's. He recruits youngsters like my buddies with the promise of fast cash & uses them for his/her dirty work.
After being grilled for 3-4 hours, I didn't want to put up with "YOU KNOW ABOUT THIS %$^&! DON'T $#^% LIE TO US!" anymore, so I finally admitted that I knew about certain plans. I didn't even know what "Conspiracy" was back then. I thought, hey I didn't even commit any so called "overt acts". And when the detectives formally charged me with "Conspiracy to commit robbery", I was devastated.
I was 16 @ the time, and have never gotten arrested before except a drug possessions charge back when I was 15 (Got caught with a joint in my wallet @ the school dance). I was pretty much screwed by the entire system afterwards. They called me a gang member, transferred my case to an adult court even though I was just 16 at the time. And the most unbelievable bull**** was the mastermind. Remember the cross dresser I mentioned? Yup they caught him/her too, but she got a slap on the wrist for the 30+ heists he/she masterminded. Yee Pop (her real name, she told us it's Mike) made a deal with the D.A. so that she became the prosecuting witness in my case, my buddies' cases, and all the other teenagers he recruited for her dirty rotten schemes.
I question the meaning of law & justice, and I am still looking for an attorney to reverse this case. When they threatened me with the "gun + gang act", which would've put in prison for 19 years, I took a plea bargain and did 3 years in state prison. I spent half of those 3 years fighting some major fires in California in the 2000 fire season. For a dollar an hour (can you say modern day slavery?).
I survived this & a lot more, all in a quarter century's time. I don't know why I babbled so much to you all. Maybe it's because I hold you all in great esteem & I felt the need to open up.
Anyways, I really felt like giving up on Dentistry until I found this

http://www.legis.state.pa.us/WU01/L...SB1752P2496.HTM

A Senate bill passed in 1994 stating that Dental students who had been convicted of a felony record may still get the chance to apply for state licensure if 10 years had passed since the conviction. I couldn't have been happier after I read this, but do realize that I need immaculate GPA/DAT to pull this thru. Thanks for your feedbacks, especially coolhanlu, & screw you Dutchboy, not all felons are butchers.

don't take everything so seriously here on sdn... good luck and do what you gotta do!

what a story itskaikai! you're like one of those people who went a 180* with their lives...just outta curiosity, were you ambitious back then (you know, doing well in school and planning a bright future??) or did the experience influence you decision now? good luck with your dreams though 👍

I use to be the biggest nerd/geek from Kintergarden-7th grade. I got straight A's; was in a "gifted student class" (which consisted of smashing things & puttin em back together); & my CTBS scores put me @ 12th grade at the age of 12. But all that seemed like eons ago...in another galaxy far far away.
The early 90s was a trying times for an Asian kid in high school. It's prolly cuz I came from a broken family & yearned for a love & respect thru thugs. Typical gang drama, how cliche, huh? 😴

Yes maam~! It's been a long time since & things are definitely looking brighter. To answer Bionerd (sorry it's in this box), I'm going into Dentistry to repay my grandmother, who has been the only one (against everyother member in my family) to support me throughout these years. And to prove it to myself that I can accomplish the impossible (although it's still too early to say). Right now me & my gf of 3 years are both finishing up with our RDH classes. I realize that it's like 98% female (that's the actual figure in Quebec, 90% in the states), so I'm hoping that my gf will support me with Dental school after I help her thru with schooling (she's not as...academically endowed 😕 )

I'm so glad to find this supportive group of network with people who genuinely care. 😍

Itskaikai,

Good news about the PA law change

It occurred to me that there may be a third hurdle and that is financial aid. I am quite sure that students seeking financil aid with drug convictions are banned from some programs however I do not know about felony convictions in general. So.... might want to check federal financial aid programs as well as state programs. Bottom line I am sure that ther is a bank that will lend money, perhaps not at the best intrest rate.

Good luck in the future, 😎

kaikai, what is your GPA?

looks like you were a minor when this occured, you might be in luck!

were you charged as a minor? because in that case, your file will be sealed by now. You and your atterney might be able to completely erase it from your record.

hope you were charged as a minor...

there was a thread about this a while ago, but i think it was regarding DUI or something alcohol related. might want to try a search.

No, not all felons are butchers. Some are contruction workers, some are janitors, and the cream of the crop of all felons become butchers. I could feed you a bunch of crap about how you still have a shot to become a dentist but you don't. Now here is the best advice you will get on this site because it is the honest truth, give up now and don't waste your time and money. My dad is a truck driver and the company he works for throws felons apps in the garbage. What makes you think a dental school wouldn't do the same?

So what you're saying is I should immediately just give up on my dreams & put on a McDonald's hat...This is exactly why most 36% of inmates released go back to jail within their 1st year. Because of ppl with your mentality. I
don't think you've even gone through my story as mentioned above. So I'm just gonna block out all your mssgs from now on (you ignorant s.o.b.). I wouldn't work at your dad's truck co. anyways, the main reason why he screens felons out so much is cuz felons apply for a job as trucker 7/10x (I met more ppl in the trucking profession than any other while in the slammer. Aside from the typical druggies, wannabe & hardcore gang members, truckers are actually hard workers & get paid very well (the ones I met mostly had a drug related problem). Dutchboy, the least you can do is throw me some constructive critisms (if you have any ethical conscious). We are human beings too.

I truly believe that I have unique case vs. the typical jailbird type. I know where I stand in legal terms, & I will fight for my rights. I did all my research & found out about a couple of routes I can take from here. As to my financial situation, I'm not too worried about that because I recieve revenues from my business + an inheritance in the future (hopefully my grandmother will stick around tho, because she is the only family I have left) The government only withhold financial aid (max is $2000 per semester anyways) from you if you were convicted of a drug-related charge. The state in which it happened in does not matter because it's a federal aid (excpetions for state-aids such as Cal-grants).

I will try year after year, even if I'm 40 years-old. because I will work my ass off until I'm 69.

I messed up big time a couple of years back, but I've been pulling off A's & B's for the pst 2 sems. I'm still early in the game tho, working on becoming a RDH 1st (to help my gf). In turn, she'll help me acheive my deams of Dentistry.

Make those A & B's all A's. You should also take Super C's advice and get a lawyer. See if you can get your situation expunged. I bet you can, and that would be a HUGE help.

Yes, I definitely need better grades...I guess Dentristry won't happen anytime soon for me, but I like to dream. Expungement is no can do in CA if you've been in the prison system. The steps that I'm going to take are
1. Certificate of Rehabilitaion (common)
2. Governor's pradon (Schwarznegger pardoned 3 in his 3 year term, but the conservative Reagan pardoned 500+ back in the 80's. Go figure...maybe I'll try my luck with the next governor)
3. Indemnity (This is a long 1, maybe I should post this in the Law forums)

Penal code 4904. If the evidence shows that the crime with which the claimant was charged was either not committed at all, or, if committed, was
not committed by the claimant, and that the claimant did not, by any
act or omission either intentionally or negligently, contribute to
the bringing about of his or her arrest or conviction, and that the
claimant has sustained pecuniary injury through his or her erroneous
conviction and imprisonment, the State Board of Control shall report
the facts of the case and its conclusions to the next Legislature of
this state, with a recommendation that an appropriation be made by
the Legislature for the purpose of indemnifying the claimant for the
pecuniary injury; but the amount of the appropriation recommended
shall be a sum equivalent to one hundred dollars ($100) per day of
incarceration served subsequent to the claimant's conviction and that
appropriation shall not be treated as gross income to the recipient
under the provisions of the Revenue and Taxation Code.

I'm don't want any money for reparations, just a chance for a clean slate. Maybe you'll hear if on the news if I do succeed in this because it is handed out VERY RARELY, if ever (I beter check on that) 😀 .

I feel for you. It will be a tough road, but I am an underdog myself. Everyday I woke up I wanted to quit, but I never did. If you are truly driven you will make it. If I were you I would work on my personal statement right away. In your situation I think it will take a compelling personal statement to get an interview with a felony conviction.

Appeal to the governator and see what happens, you never know. I hate the fact that because someone made a mistake when they were young they have to wear a scarlett letter for life. I don't mean to get you uspest, but you should know it will be a long hard road. Maybe if you do tons of volunteer work you can prove your compassion and 180 degree turn around. Good luck :luck:

Thank you hardboy...your words truly have weight with me. I've done plenty of volunteer work w/ the Red Cross & i think it's time to pay them a visit again.
