I have never been so pumped to see a movie as I am to see 2012. It promises to be the most extravagent, wanton example of disaster porn that ever was or ever will be! This saturday my entire family is going together to revel in the mindless destruction of every major landmark on the planet!

The Yellowstone super volcanoe blows! LA is hit by a 10.5 earthquake and slides into the pacific! Vegas gets swallowed up by a giant earthquake and dust storm! And mile high Tsunamis take out New York, Washington and the Himalayas!

This movie has the most expensive special effects budget in history and has the most FX screen time of any movie ever made.

No matter what they think of the movie as a film, all the critics agree that Director Ronald Emerich has far surpassed his other movies, (Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow) in terms of schere spectacle and the quality of the FX.

it's been done to death! day after tomorrow, cloverfield, etc.
oh, and john cusack is in it, no ty.

Yes, but Ronald Emerich is the master of end of the world disaster picks! And this is his magnum opus!

From what I've seen I'm not impressed, I'd download it, let it sit on my hard drive for a week or two then probably delete it. I do like John Cusack...some times.

I agree...its probably not going to be an amazing movie but its just one of those "I gotta see it" movies plus im a softy for special effects

Anyone who had the slightest hand in The Day After Tomorrow cannot be proclaimed as a master of anything. In fact, I'm pretty sure there are countries that put to death people responsible for disasters like that.

I love end of the world movies, even the truly awful ones like Deep Impact. Will definitely be seeing this!

The real 2012 is really going to disappointing after this.

haha i thought you meant literally... will we make it to 2012? is there really going to be an apocalypse? i sure hope not... because thats the year i go to medical school!! i better not be doing all this work for nothing!

maybe we should all just stop studying and go crazy

and yes, i will see the movie 2012!

It looks pretty fun, but I enjoy mindless movies with lots of explosions.

Yeah I'll be watching it. It definitely looks like one for the theater...will leave my brain at home :)

John Cusack...REALLY?

Of all freaking stars to choose from, they pick JOHN fing CUSACK?

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

But yeh, I'm still going to see it this Friday and then bang as many chicks as I can, since my woman won't mind it being the end of the world and all

Here are the clips of the movie. Check out the 5 minute except entitled "california is going down" the coolest 5 minutes of any movie I have ever seen in my life!:D

The clips where they explain how they did the FX are also really interesting, really lets you appreciate just how much work goes into making this FX doomsday spectacle!:D

I am so jazzed that I am going to see this movie tonight at midnight, then again tomorrow in the daylight, then a third time with my entire family on saturday!

Hell I may see it a couple of more times in the coming weeks and months!

This movie cost $260 million to make and represents the very best of hollywood extravagance. No other country can afford to spend over a quarter of a billion dollars on such useless debauchery and that's why the world loves us!:D

So please do your patriotic duty and support mega budget hollywood FX extravaganzas like this! :D

If it flops and Ronald Emerich is forced to stop making such movies then the world will be the poorer for it.

Here are some positive reviews from Rotten Tomatoes:

"Sit Down and Buckle Up!"

Clint Morris, Movie Hole

"Films of this sort are plotted shish kebab style: disaster, change of scenery, new disaster. But on the level of spectacle, 2012 is top-notch."

Colvin Colbert, Minneapolis Star Tribune

"It's big and cheesy and if you're in the mood for a dose of exaggerated end-of-world chaos, this is the popcorn movie for you. Roland Emmerich has gleefully combined every possible disaster extreme with child-like enthusiasm and massive visual effects".

Louise Keller, Urban Cinefile

"Remarkably, "2012" doesn't even really try to be profound, which is a good thing. All it tries to do is what it knows how to do best: entertain. At that, it comes up a winner."

Matt Soergel, Florida-Times Union

"This movie is a disaster. At least it would be if it didn't fall into the "so bad it's good" category."

Colin Newton, Australia Sunday Mail

"Emmerich supposedly spent $260m to give you the biggest experience for your ticket dollar and in this regard, he has succeeded tremendously, while, intentionally or otherwise, also delivering one of 2009’s best comedies."

Michael Adams, Empire Magazine Australasia

"It’s easy to scoff at the over-reliance of CGI in contemporary cinema but for a film like this it’s part and parcel of the whole, and computer generated effects have never before been used as spectacularly."

David Stratton, At the Movies Australia

"Giant-sized, explosive and technically astounding. This is no less than the end of the world Roland Emmerich is dealing with, and he tosses into the pot so much delirious spectacle that, yes, there are even kitchen sinks in sight."

Dustin Puttman, DustinPuttman.com

"People talk about "formula" almost always as a pejorative, but formulas get to be formulas because they work, and there's something to be said for a formula picture done almost to perfection."

Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle

"Guilty pleasures don't come guiltier than 2012."

Joe Williams, St. Louis Post-Dispatch

"Emmerich doesn't mess around when intent on messing up the world for good. But his pop apocalypse multiplying man's worst fears, always goes down easy with a side order of popcorn. Apocalypse Wow."

Prairie Miller, NewsBlaze

"This is fun. 2012 delivers what it promises, and since no sentient being will buy a ticket expecting anything else, it will be, for its audiences, one of the most satisfactory films of the year."

Roger Ebert, Chicago-Sun Times

2012 is for fun loving people, the kind who love to just go the movies for the sheer love of life! If you can't enjoy movies that are "so bad they're good" like the legendary Snakes on a Plane you'll hate this movie.

BUT if you love big budget FX popcorn flicks then this movie will surely not disappoint.!:D

I only see movies based on Rotten Tomatoes...

31% = Hell to the No.

It should be a fun movie to watch =] Haha, I'm going to watch it with my dad this weekend :D

Just saw it at a midnight showing. Pretty packed theater=most likely a hit at the box office.

I enjoyed the movie thoroughly, better than day after tomorrow, (which I also liked) but not as good as ID4, (which is one of my all time favorite movies, I wish they would make a sequel:D

The effects where as spectacular as we expected and overall I didn't see what the critics were complaining about. Sure there is the standard tachiness, divorced father reconnecting with his family, ect. But overall the movie rocked and rocked hard. My only complaints, it was too short and not enough destruction:D I would have loved to see a full 3 hr 45 minutes of mayhem and New York, Paris, and some other landmarks get destroyed. How about the Pyramids? Those haven't been ****ed with since transformers 2, time to blow them up, No?:D

Did the science suck? Sure, but then again in movies like this you just got to roll with it.

I can't wait to see it again with my family this saturday.

Great Job Ronald Emerich, now get started on your next end of the world movie but this time, more destruction please, oh and make it longer, I want to really get my money's worth:D

I'm in. I've already planned to see the movie over the holiday with my family.

JC is the only redeeming thing about this movie to me. Seen one too many disaster movies that stunk it up. Even if this one turns out to be spectacular, so many other terrible ones are enough to deter me from seeing this movie.

That and anything that even sniffs of Michael Bay :p

I think I'll go see it. But I really do hope the world doesn't end on 12/21/12 - first, because that's my bday, and second, because I'll be 6 months away from graduating med school - it would just suck to get that close and have the world end! ;)

I just saw this movie for the second time today and I have to say as much as I enjoyed watching it the first time, I was even more blown away the second time.

Tomorrow I am taking my entire family to see it, and I am confident that a third viewing will allow me to really savor the rich nuance this film has to offer.

Kudos to Ronald Emerich for a truly great piece of cinema. This movie captures the essence of the human experience and portrays it in all its splendor.

Here's hoping he can outdo himself with the two ID4 sequels he's planning, ID4--Ever parts 1 and 2.

This man truly is the great director of our generation.

Oh and I am really looking forward to 2013, the tv show that will show us how humanity rebuilds.

The last movie I saw in the theater was 'Transformers 2'....prior to that I think the last one I saw was 'Mongol', which was out around the time of 'Wall-E' (we accidentally walked into the room for Wall-E, turns out we would have been better off staying there since Mongol was a disappointment).

This summer I wanted to see 'Star Trek', turns out I was too late. Want to see 'The Box' and 'The Road' but 99.9999% chance I will not see it due to my track record.

Don't really want to see 2012, if anything I'd go for the special affects.

Has anyone seen 'The Road' (since the subject of apocalypse movies is up)?

How was the movie? BTW, Transformers 2 was such a disappointment compared to the first one. I regret the 2.5 hours and 10 dollars I spent watching that garbage.

Disappointment indeed

But at least you didn't have to pay for 4 other people, as well as a parking ticket (having parking meters next to a theater that have a 1 hour time limit is EVIL)

Haha, that sucks. I took my mom to see it with me, and she was pretty pissed at me afterwards for wasting HER time. Epic fail.

My aunt went with my cousins and me to see the first Pokémon movie when it came out...my cousins and I look back at those days and wonder what the hell we were into....and yea, my aunt was probably thinking the same....

I've gotta vent: that preview makes the hair on my neck stand up and brings tears to at least one of my eyes every time I see it.. hard to say if it's the fires, human steamrollering, 3D animations, aircraft carriers, giraffes, monks, John Cusack, or opera music. Whatever it is, I'm impressed. It's like listening to bagpipes or seeing those monsters in Where the Wild Things Are cry!

The actual movie looks pretty so-so to me, mostly because I can't imagine anything as good as the preview lasting for more than 168 seconds.... especially that :(

p.s. Should I wait till the world ends to apply to med school? I'm thinking, less competition...

I moved up my timeframe and went to see the movie today. Awesome! There isn't a dull moment in the movie, transformed neutrinos not withstanding.

I would also like to add that Independence Day is the only decent movie Roland Emmerich has ever made.

Are you Roland Emmerich? You can't just come on here and plug your own movie man. Lame.

No I am not Ronald Emerich, but having just come back from seeing it with my family, (3rd time for me) I can honestly say this is the greatest movie of the year. My entire family was in tears at several moments throughout the film and I now truly believe this movie epitomizes the human condition.

No other film has so well documented the desire to survive and save one's family as well as the quiet dignity that humans are capable of when faced with imminent death.

2012 is not just a tour de force as an FX spectacle, (which is all I was expecting) but as a work of art that stirs the soul and elevates the spirit of everyone who watches it.

Ronald Emerich is not a great film maker, or even a good one. He is nothing less than a genius, a master of exposing the very essence of humanity by placing regular people at the mercy of nature's awesome power.

In his films, Emerich shows the bonds that tie mankind together are truly greater than those that divide us. When faced with imminent destruction we see the greatness that humans can accomplish when we put aside our petty differences and work towards a common cause.

I am not joking when I say that this movie should win the "best picture" oscar and that I can't wait to go see this movie for a 4th time next weekend. It just keeps getting better each time I see it.

I would say the movie is great entertainment, and well worth the money. Besides the pathos, the drama, and occational horror, there are a few very funny moments to relieve the near-constant tension of the movie. I'd see it again.

I am definitely seeing it. Not expecting it to be deep but I think it will be entertaining.

day after tomorrow was a better movie IMO.

Here's how I would rank Emerich's films.

1. Independence Day, IMO one of the best movies ever made, can't wait for the 2 sequels to come out.
2. 2012, perhaps the best movie of the decade, I will have to see it another couple of times to know for sure.
3. Day After Tomorrow, loved the fact that it was nature and that no gov scientist comes up with an insane way to stop the destruction, ala "The core" but other than the tornadoes and wave hitting new york it was a giant blizzard. Though its message was humbling, its scope was limited.
4. Godzilla, I always liked that lizard and I thought it was a fun film, but just barely a disaster movie.
5. 10,000 BC. Though I enjoyed the movie I can't help but wonder where the disaster is? What is the moral of this movie? What does it teach us about humanity? And where are the landmarks that get destroyed? Odd that Emerich would even make this.

Just saw it, not that bad really.

Biggest disappointment was that by far the best part of the movie was the California scene, and I had already seen like 90% of that scene on the internet : /

Anyway, decent film, it did what I pay a movies to do: Entertain me for a few hours. And it did this quite well.
I'd watch it again in a year or so.
