Hey everyone -

I'm leaving my job to attend Davis Vet in the fall and the very nice people at work are bugging me for gift ideas.

This is difficult because my hobbies are pretty specific (ie it would be hard for someone else to buy me stuff for them) and truly I pretty much have everything i need and am really content...In fact i tried that exact line - that i would be perfectly happy with nothing but thats not going to work. I was told either to give them a list or i would end up with a bunch of useless stuff......

The job is a non-vet job so its not like i can ask them what a vet student needs.....and my current wish list is fairly useless for a gift list like this.

BTW - one handed typing here due to fractured elbow - sorry about the punctuation/spelling etc.

Here's what i have so far:

Amazon gift card
irobot 550 from costco
puppy stuff (new puppy coming on the 14th)
Apple store gift card for accessories/apps etc that i'm going to need for the computer/ipad, or that can be used towards an ipad.
Grocery store to trader joes (for those special items once i get sick of potatos and rice)
Litthman Classic II 'scope (could dicey because they arent vet people)
A gift card to somewhere i could buy school supplies.

Here's my question for you - what is your wish list for vet school? What do you want. What luxury makes your day as a student?

BTW - the whole giving to charity thing isn't going to work with this crowd, even though it's a great idea 🙂 Plus, if there really is something they could get me that is useful....that would be awesome!

A stethoscope is a really nice gift. Friends of mine who have left labs for medical school have gotten this. Other than that I'm a firm believer in the gift card. Amazon.com is always a good choice, as they have everything.

I agree gift cards are good, are you going to need anything for your new apartment/house? Maybe an ikea gift card too if they want to branch out from what you told them, but otherwise your list looks like everything I would want, except like someone said... caffeine-- I'm planning on getting a Keurig- I hate wasting coffee, but also don't like day old coffee if I brew a whole pot, and the Keurigs are so much faster in the mornings, my parents have one and I love it when I visit them.

I felt kind of awkward telling people what I want... everyone is asking me and I am kinda like... "uh...."

So far I've told people that I want highlighters 🙂

And I will forever love the person who gets me my first stethoscope.

But past that... idk. I guess I'm going to start telling people about amazon gift cards, or house stuff.

Haha. No gifts here either, but I'm okay with that.

I would consider a Roomba. I don't really vacuum much now, so it will look like I have carpet during vet school (and I don't!)

I would maybe pick a de-stresser thing for you (mani/pedi, massage, bowling, paintball, whatever) and then save it for the first time you feel like you're drowning a bit during first semester.

YUP. I'm in the same boat. I have seen several people on here talk about their gifts. I'm starting to feel left out. 🙂 Maybe it's because I'm not really moving away?? It's ok. Getting into vet school is pretty much the biggest gift I could EVER wish for!

I think the "spoil" gifts are a good idea! Target gift cards can never hurt!

I haven't been asked about gifts either, and I'm definitely moving out of the area. I'm fairly certain I'll get something from my current work place and where I'll be over the summer. Where I am now, one of my coworkers went off to vet school and my boss surprised him with a 5 Min Vet Consult for small animals. Where I'm going this summer is where I worked before undergrad and they got me a gift going to undergrad, so I wouldn't be surprised if they got me something.

It's hard with specific things, I agree. I like the idea of puppy stuff and gift cards. I think it's important not to say you'd be happy with anything because they might GET you anything and it would just be useless clutter 😛

I agree that gift cards are a great idea. Also, maybe a nice lab coat? You may not use it a ton first year, but it would come in handy later. And there is a huge difference between a nice lab coat and a cheap one! (I can barely stand my $10 lab coat from undergrad!)
Stuff for an apartment is always nice--and I agree with the highlighters. I've used so many this year!

You are going to get so many free pens and highlighters when you get to school. Don't stock up yet! haha. Things that are helpful gifts for school would be anything you are using your disposable income for now. Once you get to vet school and are thriving off of school loans you can't just buy things whenever. I would ask for a TON of stuff for your new puppy. I spend way too much on that little mutt.

Other helpful things: scrubs? You will want them for anatomy lab. I like what you have on your list so far. Maybe things that you could decorate your new place with? Also, most people get dog tags made for their stethoscopes, so that could be a fun gift.

The ikea gift card is a great idea. I have a very small space to work in and it would be useful to help me organize.

Sounds like I have my bases covered. I told my co-worker thats coordinating this that no matter what it had to be useful and not anything that's going to sit on a shelf and she totally has the same philosophy which very cool!

Re the whole gift thing...The onlt other time there was "parting gifts" was when i left a position is when i left the SA clinic i worked at for 2 years to go to davis. The owner vet gave me an REI gift card that i made last 2 years! It was awesome. At this job I've manged 3 different departments here during my 5 years in the company and the gift idea requests are coming from my co-workers (other supervisor/managers) and the hourly employees that used to work for me. But honestly, what means more to me than anythin is the kind words that my employees (past and current) are giving me. Managing other people is not an especially easy task (especially as a new college grad that looks 16 and your department is made up of employees who have been here 25+ years) and to hear that they will miss me and appreciated my fairness/consistency/etc is good to hear. I don't manage people with the intent they are going to like me, but do try to be consistent, fair and a good listener. They keep telling me how much they've learned and don't believe me when i say i learned so much more from them.

Yeah the job has sucked lately due to corporate politics, but the last couple of weeks here are reminding me what's special about me job here - the employees i get to work with every day.

I was thinking this same thing!! Even stuff for the future, depending on how big the pup will get. The price of dog stuff is ridiculous... perhaps a bunch of bigger rawhide bones and toys for when he/she is not so much a puppy anymore?


I was going to add that you may ask for a grocery store card or something to that effect (but make sure they have the store in your area... my house in TX doesn't have the same stores) or perhaps a Walmart card for groceries or knick knacks that you find yourself truly needing at a later time when you're dead broke. I know its not the funnest gift, but I always appreciate the cards later when I've spent my allotted money for that period and am trying to scrounge up $10 to go buy whatever I'm really needing at that time.

Gas cards are always good too, if you have to pay for your own gas... you only have so many arms and legs to use as currency at the pump 😉

If they did ask me though, I would say gift cards up the wazooooo. I'm much too particular about what I like and what I don't that gift cards make me feel like I'm in control. It's silly, I know. 🙄

Things that I am asking for are all things for my apartment. In undergrad my apartment was always furnished and I had roommates so there are lots of things that were shared and now need for my unfurnished apartment and for me living alone for the first time.

I like this link even though there are unnecessary things there are also a lot of little things that you might not think of for an apartment.

There always the people that want to get you gifts rather than gift cards, so maybe you could find a couple things for those kinda people.

From my work, I got a certificate notifying me of an award, and it was added to my record. I have to purchase the award if I actually want it. Sadly, it's the same award I would have received if I was a private leaving after 4 years. Oh well, the better gift is the framed picture that my section took in Iraq, complete with my rank, division patch, Airborne wings, and a flag with the wrong call sign for me on it. Of course, only a select number of people will notice that flaw.

I was working a non-vet job before vet school, but one of them asked a vet friend for advice and they all went in together to buy me a Littman Classic II S.E. stethoscope. Here I am, five years out of vet school... still use that stethoscope every day and still sometimes think of those coworkers when I use it 🙂

Haha you can send me the baskets, he has talked about me taking over when I graduate. He says every year Florida gets more and more appealing. Gonna one be one damn good vet and person lost to Florida's beaches😎
