Hello. I was accepted at a school through a program but withdrew in late May in order to reapply for the 2007 cycle. I made the right decision for myself, and am much happier as a result. There is no need to tell me that I should have been grateful to have an acceptance anywhere. What's done is done. I would have been very unhappy at this particular school. I stayed in the program for as long as I did because of pressure from my parents. Needless to say, I regret that now. Meanwhile, I am happy and confident. My numbers are well above average and I am spending this year doing research and teaching.
From reading this forum, I have reason to believe that admissions officers will know about my withdrawal. I have good reasons to defend my decision, but I'm not sure when or how to bring this up. Secondary applications do not allow for a lot of essay space, and I'm not sure I want my secondary to be memorable because I spent time discussing a withdrawal (say, in a question asking about a difficult decision I had to make). It's difficult to do this properly AND highlight the ECs that I'm proud of with a ~ 2000 character limit.
Personally I would much rather discuss this sort of thing in an interview, but I want to avoid giving an impression that I am trying to cover it up. Ideally, my strengths as an applicant would be enough to get me to the interview where I would be happy to talk about my withdrawal. Still, I have this fear that I might not get to the interview as a result.
Any thoughts?
