Hey girls so what do you guys think about colored shirts under suits. I really like this purple one but I am not to sure if its too much color. I have a charcoal grey and a black suit...
http://bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=51166&vid=1&pid=715604&scid=715604142

My concern with that shirt is that it might not be colorful enough!

Colored shirts (both button-downs and shells) can look great under suits, as long as you have a fitting combo.

That purple one might look nice with a medium to dark gray suit, but I'd worry that charcoal or black might make for an ensemble that's overall too dark.

In my opinion, colored shirts spice up the typical grey/black suit. I wore a deep pink shirt under my grey suit last year and actually got a few compliments haha. And that purple looks good!

So I'm fairly confident that I won't be comfortable staying in my interview heels during tours, etc. Are there any rules/guidelines about what shoes I can wear to tours and lunches?

You can bring a pair of flats to wear during tours and lunches.

Please minimize the clackidy-clack shoes ladies. They are really annoying to bystanders and tour guides (like me) when you're walking around.

Get a pair of shoes with rubber soles. If you don't know what I'm talking about, ask any shoe salesperson or check out the bottom of quality men's shoes like Rockport.

I don't know about that. A "clackidy-clack" heel may annoy some, but if it goes with the suit, it goes with the suit. I'd rather be more confident in my entire look than settle for a shoe that I'm not comfortable with. And it's also true that a high heel that doesn't click is really disconcerting to wear.

Just get some heel silencers. They likely wouldn't work on a narrow stiletto type heel, but would work just fine for thicker heels.

Here are some professional grade ones, but I'm thinking that a trip to the adhesive furniture-feet section of Target would be just as functional and much cheaper! 🙂

Part of what I'm saying is, the click of the heel is both familiar (so I know my steps are sure) and feminine to me, as much a part of the ensemble as the tailored suit and the eyeliner. There's a time for rubber/silent soles, but I'm not going to make the interview one of them.

+1 totally agree. There is power in the click of a heel.

what do all of you think about patent heels? i'm debating between a round-toe patent pump and a regular black almond-toe pump.

thanks!

Do you ever try to make your stride extra-long so your clicks are farther apart and you sound really badass?

........or is that just me......😳

also, any suggestions on blouse colors for pale skin? i've tried on so many different ones that i can't even tell what looks good anymore, haha.

thanks!
I vote for the patent heels. I have almond toe patent heels and I think they look super cute! I think its a good way to make a standard interview ensemble a little more interesting and I've gotten compliments from fellow interviewees too.

Are you dressing for a professional interview or for a dominatrix convention?

Med school faculty tend to dress at or just above what's considered to be office casual, and particularly very casually for shoes because of the need to stand and walk more than others do. Many of them will be old enough to be your parent. If you come bopping in with a power outfit and stiletto heels, they could easily conclude that you've dressed inappropriately and look quite silly.

Professional dress isn't always the most stylish, and functionality tends to trump appearance. Try to look how a med student would look seeing patients. After all, isn't that what you're trying to convince them to see you as?

I completely disagree. Of course, 6-inch stilettos would look a bit silly, but a nice-looking professional suit and heels is absolutely appropriate. Yes, some of the interviewers are dressed more casually (I had one guy actually in scrubs), but that doesn't mean that you should dress down as well.

Despite whichever the side of the heel you ladies fall, there is no better quick 'n light interview tool than a funny 1-liner

has anyone seen anyone on the interview trail in a non-suit? i left my suit on the plane yesterday on the east coast (yeah, dumb move 🙁😱) and i have another interview on monday - so basically not enough time to find a replacement with alterations. i'm still looking, but in case that fails, i'm thinking of wearing black dress pants, a nice blouse, and a black cardi. is that unacceptable? 😕

Yes I have. Fine for some places. Not fine for other, more stodgy places... you know where (think places where they have oil paintings of all their med school ancestors hung up).

But honestly, if your app is strong enough and you look presentable, you'll be fine.

No faculty interviewers is going to be like, oh she definitely is not a fit for us because she didn't wear a suit like all the other applicant clones I saw today.

And student interviewers don't care 😀
(Or they should take the stick out of their ass if they do)

***
I heard about a guy getting into Northwestern residency wearing tee and flips. Guy tore up his step1 and actually by dressing like that stood out from the pack of baller applicants.

But... for med school interviews at most places, what you describe is probably the minimal amount of formality you need. Just to be safe.

Holy CRAP!

I just saw that 😱

Is there anyway to get your suit back ???

Oh nooooo 🙁 I'm always paranoid that I'm going to leave my suit on the plane, too, because I try to hang it up whenever there's room. I hope you get it back!!

I saw a girl at my last interview wearing a black dress with a cute blazer, and she looked great. Though I guess finding a blazer poses the problem of potentially needing alterations (also blazers can be expensive...).

I can see the headlines now...

Samuel L Jackson stars in his next movie, Suits on a Plane

But frankly I'm afraid of leaving my suits on the plane too 😱
Since I'm flying from 1 interview after another directly, this better not happen :meanie:

^
yeah, unfortunately, carrying on a garment bag brings its own pitfalls, especially if you are absent-minded. ironically enough, my checked bag arrived safely. 😱

i hope no one else loses their suit!

:scared:OMG how scary!!! It's funny, I actually insisted on bringing my suit in a garment bag on the plane with me because I was afraid of the airport losing my checked bag (they have lost my luggage before!!!).

^
if i had to do it again, i would just ditch the garment bag and put it into my under the seat carry-on. my suit didn't wrinkle much anyways. alas.

i have this sneaking suspicion that it might still be chilling on the plane, so if anyone is flying between Richmond and Atlanta and wouldn't mind lending a hand, let me know. reward offered for suit.:xf:

Hello ladies,

Do you think a polyester suit would be appropriate for interviews? I have two beautiful suits that are mostly wool (one charcoal, one brownish-gray), plus a Calvin Klein dark brown suit that's polyester (the fabric does look high-quality). That polyester suit goes beautifully with a coral blouse I just bought and I'd love to use it in the event that something bad happens to one of my wool suits!

what kind of bags/totes are you ladies bringing to interviews?

One time, I hung my garment bag in the front of the plane. A man who got off the plane well before I did accidentally took my bag instead of his own... I left my suitcase at the security desk, they looked up his next flight using his info from his tag, and I chased him down through Boston Logan Airport while they called his name on a loudspeaker. 😱 It was scary, but kind of awesome that I found him.

About bags- I turned my phone off and stuck it in the inner pocket of my suit jacket, along with cash, ID, and debit card. Chapstick in the other inside pocket. (It wasn't bulky at all or else I would have used a purse)

I did bring a purse once- just a black Coach purse- but I didn't like carrying it around all day. I guess I'm in the minority as far as purses go but just wear one that matches/coordinates with your shoes and belt.

I just brought my regular purse (black satchel) to all of my interviews so far, but I've noticed that most girls prefer to have bigger portfolio-sized totes to carry the papers they give you. Personally, I haven't had a problem. Most places are very nice about letting you know that you can store your stuff in the admissions office when you don't need it, and all but one of the schools I've interviewed at gave me a folder to hold papers and such. I just like having all my important stuff with me (car keys if I drove, flight info if I'm going straight to the airport, phone, wallet, etc.). I was going to buy a new portfolio or tote if it seemed necessary after the first couple interviews, but it really doesn't.

Best of luck. 🙂

So, with an interview now looming, last weekend I went out and prowled stores in earnest. I found this one outfit at Talbots that I really like, but I'm still a little unsure. It fits me very well and doesn't look slinky or anything, it's just not as stodgy as the usual business suit attire. Bear in mind I am 32 and curvy, and would rather look like a well-dressed middle-aged woman. I just don't want to look like a politician's wife.

What do you guys think?
Jacket and Skirt, I'd be looking at both in the blue color.

Both pieces look very nice, my only concern is that the color may not be seasonally appropriate (those all look like "spring colors" to me). Granted, I don't think that women are held to the same strict standards as men when it comes to suits, but it still might be safer to go with a darker color (medium gray to charcoal, navy, etc.). If you have no other good options, though, the blue will probably be fine!

Thanks for the feedback! I've still been hankering for a medium to darker grey/charcoal suit but so far haven't found the right one. I am terribly fond of this shade of blue, though, and it does suit my coloring. I'm hoping that it won't look too out of season, as the heaviness of the wool fabric does somewhat belie the springlike color. I'm keeping it (with tags on, returnable) as a standby if I can't find anything I like better. 🙂

That's great. =) It IS a very pretty suit that will make you stand out in a good way. Best of luck with your interviews 👍

Does anyone know if it is inappropriate to wear charcoal gray pants, and a black blouse and black blazer? Or even black plants and a black blouse with a charcoal blazer? My first interview is in a week and I was just wondering if it is okay to mix it up or if we need to keep the standard grays together and blacks together.

Any advice would help. 🙂

Thx and :luck:

I'm firmly of the opinion that for an interview as important as medschool you should wear a true suit. The jacket and pants/skirt should match exactly - same brand, fabric, dye lot, etc. Otherwise it's just a nice professional outfit that coordinates (and may look perfectly lovely). I'm not sure how set in stone this is, but in my mind there's a distinct difference in formality between a true suit and a coordinated set. I don't think a coordinated set is inappropriate, per se, it's just not as formal.

If for some reason you can't find a true suit, I would at least ensure that the colors match exactly. This can be so frustrating when you're shopping somewhere like Nordstrom Rack where you can find all kinds of great pants and blazers as separates but it's damn near impossible to find a matching pair. 😡

Dianyla I really like that blue suit!

I've actually been wondering if colors other than black, dark blue, and gray are appropriate because I've seen some really pretty caramel and cranberry colored suits and I kind of love them. Does anyone know if these colors are inappropriate? Obviously if I wore one of these colors I would be sure to choose a suit with a conservative, un-embellished cut.

Also, is it ok to wear flats with suits? Specifically skirt suits? I HATE heels and I am also a massive klutz so I wearing them would really just stress me out more on interview day. (I doubt falling over would impress my interviewers.) I could probably handle a tiny heel (like a wedge or kitten heel).

Thank you! I am still a little nervous but overall very happy with it. Especially because it's very warm, without being bulky, and then I won't have to deal with a coat.

I think a caramel or cranberry colored suit sounds wonderful, especially if it complements your coloring. I wouldn't go with anything really vivid, but muted tones are great. For example, cranberry is great, but I wouldn't do bright red. Eggplant is lovely, but purple is too much. And you got it right, if you're going to be daring with the color, stay conservative with the cut. I've already seen two groups of interviewees around my home school's campus and they are literally a solid black funereal procession. 😕

I think flats are fine, as long as they're formal enough looking in terms of material and don't look like casual slipper-type cutesy shoes. I have odd feet that look very unflattering in flats, otherwise I wish I could wear them. If you could find the right shoe with just a 3/4-1" heel that might be just perfect, and a wedge heel is much more stable. Teetering around in unstable/uncomfortable shoes is just one less thing you want to be nervous about on interview day! 😀

Is a sheath dress + blazer appropriate? The dress is black cotton (as is the blazer) with a high neck. I'm not too concerned about the length - it hits right at the knee when I'm sitting. It looks like this dress except with a collar instead of a round neck..

Also, I was planning on carrying around a pair of flats for the tour part (just in case it's long!).. this is generally okay, right?

I've only seen one girl wear a dress at the nine interviews I've been to. However, I thought she looked great and professional, and I don't think it impacted her negatively at all. I think the general advice you get on SDN is to play it super safe (long sleeved white or blue collared button-down shirt + conservative-colored matching suit sets only), but honestly, I don't think most adcoms are as strict or judgmental as we make them out to be. If you think it looks appropriate, go for it! The length on that picture looks fine to me. Bringing along a pair of flats is fine, although I personally haven't had to do that... are you planning to bring it in your suitcase?

Wow... only 1 girl in a dress? Speaking of inappropriate - last year, I saw a girl in a skirt suit and platform heels. Which sounds okay except the heels were at least 5 inches tall and the skirt was half way up her thigh. 😱

I was planning to bring a really thin pair I can just tuck into my purse. I guess it might look weird pulling out a pair of shoes from my purse but nothing worse than hobbling out of your interview like a gimp because you've been walking around in heels all day!

^ I think a business dress with matching blazer (I do feel like one should wear a jacket, though I have seen one girl at one of my interviews in just a dress) is fine - it kind of looks like a skirt suit with a black shell anyway... I've brought along a pair of flats in my bag at each of my interviews so far, which has been great (I'm not great with walking around in heels) - you'll generally have time to slip them on/off before your actual interviews.

I have a grey pantsuit, and I bought a long-sleeved shirt to go with it. This is the color of the shirt:

Is it TOO pink/flashy? I think it looks okay with the grey, but wanted to get some second opinions!

It certainly doesn't look flashy in my opinion. It's not like HOT HOT pink or anything. It will still look professional especially paired with a suit. And at least you'll have some color... besides the typical white or blue 🙂.

That is fairly vivid - if the color in the photo is accurate. How is the blazer styled... does much of the shirt show or just a bit? I would want to keep that much color limited to a relatively small visual dose.

That being said, if the tone complements your coloring and pairs well with the grey, I'd say go for it. 👍

The color looked alright in the lighting in the fitting rooms at the store, but as I was walking through the house wearing my suit, I realized that under some types of lighting, the color seemed really bright.

My blazer buttons at about mid-chest, and some of the shirt also sticks out from the sleeves - I hope that won't be overly much?

Also, thanks for replying so quickly - Dianyla and bpost!

I think that color would look great with a gray suit! I wore a much more "flashy" pink last year, and no one seemed to mind. A couple interviewers actually complimented my shirt haha. Like the above posters said, if it goes well with your suit and skin tone, I wouldn't worry too much.

grey wool skirt suit.
but god, i look ugly with collared shirts ...
could i wear a shell or is a shell not okay?

I've actually seen more girls wearing shells than collared shirts and look both options look great. A lot of girls also opt for the more girly blouses with a strand of pearls, but that was towards the beginning of the interview season when weather was pretty nice. The only time I saw a questionable outfit choice was when a girl wore a tight gray dress (without jacket even though it was rainy/cold outside) and extremely casual flats.

There's nothing wrong with females wearing tight clothing. Don't be such a hater. 👎

thanks.
my suit is very professional and gray.

Lol, I think I had issues with the flats and not so much her dress. Although all of us interviewing that day were females and somewhat shocked when she came into the room. Not hating on her but it definitely stood out to me as very casual.
