Women's suits for interview

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I bought mine online at J.Crew and I love it. I went to the actual store but they didn't carry petites except online, though they did measure for me so I knew which size to buy. I've also heard that Ann Taylor is great for petite suits.

I recently saw that The Limited had wrinkle free travel suits, I'm pretty sure their fabrics are lower quality (poorer drape) but not having to iron before every interview or being able to fly in the suit without fear sounds pretty sweet. I think they are cheeper too.

Psipsina or anyone else who bought a J Crew suit-- do they change their fabrics according to season? Is the stuff online now intended for the summer and not heavy enough for cold weather? Any recommendations for the material, since there are several options? Thanks!

stores will change suit material depending on the season. i've seen some linen suits, which are definitely for summer. wool suits generally are for winter.

My suit is the wool twill, I liked the feel of it best and they said it was a "year round fabric", I think J.Crew pretty much keeps the same basic suits year round and then add in a super110 suit in the winter. I ended up having all warm climate interviews but my plan for cold was just to do a dressy winter coat (also J.Crew, I have an addiction, lol) over the suit and possibly a knit top underneath instead of a button down shirt. I had a lightweight shell too for super hot climates.

So I just bought a suit at the Limited and it came out to be a little over 200(including the shirt underneath). I was pretty happy with it, it's light gray with a pink shirt underneath but now I'm getting worried that it might stick out too much. What do you guys think?

i think you should be okay as long as it is a solid colored shirt. if you wanted to be very conservative it is a black suit with a white or blue shirt, but hey we're girls 🙂

I bought a suit for $125 at Dillards and it looked nicer than all the $300-$400 ones I tried on. Gotta love that. Also, I was at Nordstrom Rack the other day and saw several Anne Klein, etc. suits marked down to $100. I tried several on, but couldn't justify buying a second suit for interviews. I know those outlet stores are hit or miss, but if you have the time, you can really make out well.

I got mine (a nice black skirt suit from Liz Claiborne) yesterday at Macy's for 50% off. With cost of alterations (sleeves and skirt were a little too long for me), I'll have spent only $202 total. I still need shoes and a portfolio or whatever though.

What kind of portfolio do we need? And what should we take with us (AMCAS, resume?)

Is a black skirt suit (calvin klein) too blah?

🙂

not at all. you can't go wrong with conservative.

Just curious - is anyone wearing a dress?

whoa . . .

at my interview in san antonio, i saw a chick wearing this clubbing/going out style top without a jacket. It showed her whole nasty, pasty back and shoulders/wide upper arms. i could not believe it. to make it worse, she was sunburned. 👎

she totally stuck out.

i think going with a suit and wearing the jacket the whole time is the way to go. pants, skirt whatever. just don't be like that girl.

LOL. I think the people who wore dresses last year wore SUIT dresses (ie. with a suit jacket) - I think some of the most inappropriate interview attire is found at TX medical schools - maybe it's the hot weather?

Or - maybe the sunburn was so bad she couldn't stand the feel of clothing on her back.... :meanie:

whoa, have you been to texas? it's freaking hot, like africa hot. i know i lived not far from the sahara.

i could understand maybe not wearing panty hose, but a clubbing top that shows your nasty untoned flabby body?

suit dresses, i say go for it. i wanted to do that, just didn't find one.

I'll put in my vote for a bricks-and-mortar store, but why is everyone recommending such expensive places? I got my suit at Hecht's for about $70, and I did just fine on the interview trail. As long as your suit fits well and looks professional, you'll do fine. Save your money for important things.

Outlet stores are also a good, inexpensive option, especially if you really want a particular brand name.

I agree, people are crazy talking about several hundred dollar suits. Who cares, just look professional.

HAHA - yeah my sarcasm may have gone unnoticed since my profile no longer says I'm from TX....I live in TX (native born at that!) so I definitely know the weather!

There is something appealing in a dress - fewer articles of clothing to mess with (although you should probably wear hose)

I got my suit at Benetton for less than $150 -a lot of places like Macy's, etc, are having good sales right now for their "summer" suits (eg, not the heavy jackets), so if you've got fall interviews, go shopping already before they shlep them off to a warehouse.

I hit the clearance sale at Macy's last summer and got two suits. One is a navy pants suit with pinstripes and the other is a dark gray skirt suit with very light grayish pin stripes. I am going with the gray skirt suit because I think it looks better with my complexion than the navy, but it's nice having a backup! I got both for about $100. Hopefully I get an interview invite so I can finally wear this suit that's been in my closet for a year. Love macy's!

tx native here-- at my a&m interview today there was one girl not wearing a suit at all. it was a knit skirt with a very forever 21ish top. that's a definite do NOT. my suit stuck out a little, but i think in a good way. it was a grey herring bone suit with a pattern tank underneath that was green. but i didnt take off my blazer... too many tattoos for that... it was waayyy clearance on sale at macy's. i'd aim for clearance sales, though if i have any winter time interviews, i might need to get a new one.

benefit of spending a year in DC: you learn how to wear suits.

It's amazing how people miss the memo on how to dress for an interview. I went to college with a girl who thought every day was "dress as much like Barbie as possible" day; she once showed up at a Senator's office looking like a bad, Barbie goes biker chick look. I still cringe when I think about that outfit.

And DC certainly teaches you how to dress conservatively...if you stay away from the clubs, mind you. But hang out on the Hill for any period of time, and you figure it out real quick.
