This is not actually a word association game... I'm thinking about if I want to put this activity on my AMCAS (yes, I know this is way ahead of time). Basically, I'm worried that ADCOMs will associate this with all sorts of negative things.

Anyway, that EC (hobby, moreso) is fire spinning/dancing. What do you think of when you see the words "Fire Dancing"?

I'm afraid this will have connotations of drug use and burning man etc. etc. But I've never been to burning man. Although I have considered it, but it's really not my sort of thing, just seems like something to experience once. I don't do (and haven't done any) drugs, either. So both of these things would misrepresent me.

For reference, if you don't know what this is here's a video I made when I was first learning with fire...

No comments on the YT SN, I made the name like 7? years ago, before I found "Doctor so and so" to be a bit pretentious

you get to describe what it is. That way people who say they dance can explain whether they tap or strip lol

a redheaded stripper?

It's not so much describing what I do as avoiding the negative conclusions that may or may not be drawn from what I do.

Maybe it's best to leave it out. I personally am impressed 😱 but if you say it was creative performances or dancing they would ask to specify. Then they might ask if you ever had the thought of setting people you hated on fire. You would say no but if your facial expressions say yes then you are out faster than a fire under a bucket of water (pun intended ). That is just my two cents. Adcoms like to see that you "break the mold" of helping others by doing something other than shadowing or EMT. Maybe if you did street performances for money and donated it to a good cause like St. Judes Children's Research Hospital and then Adcoms could show you some 😍

Honestly, I would absolutely put this on your application. Everyone has the same grades, MCAT and general medically-related ECs/research, so a surprising amount of the admissions game (IMO) is how much you can get your interviewer to like you and how memorable you are. This would definitely give you a talking point in your interviews that would make you memorable 🙂

I agree with GoSpursGo. I would definitely put this on my application... i'm jealous!!

I honestly didn't think of any negative connotations when you posted it. I have no idea what fire dancing has to do with drugs but maybe I'm naive. As long as you don't say "I find that the fire dancing is more fun when I'm high as a kite" I can't imagine them being like "ooo no we don't like him, he plays with fire"

I don't disagree. I have a brother who goes to Burning Man every year, and despite that, when you said Fire Dancing, no negative connotations came to my (very conservative) mind. I'd list it under Arts Involvement and include the You Tube link. It was beautiful.

👍

Definitely place this on your application, especially if this is something that is more than just a hobby to you. In your description, you can mention the training involved and performances you've done. This is very cool, very unique thing to have done and will make your application stand out.
