Hello everyone,
I have been working at America's Best Contacts and Eyeglasses for a little over a month as a VA Tech. I do the pre-testing (VA's, NCT, Auto Refractor, FDT, etc.) and pretty much collect information for the doctor. Sometimes I will sit in the exam room and watch the doctor give the exam to the patient. I work 40 hour weeks and my question is is the past month considered shadowing hours? Or just work experience?

Either way it can only be beneficial...right?

I think you're fine. I never had any volunteer experience, just working experience with optometrists. Any experience is good whether you're being paid or not. I would definitely consider getting experience in a different setting as well just so you can see how different modalities of practice work.

Any experience is usually good.

I would be cautious about listing or discussing where you did it.
America's Best is usually regarded in the optometric community as the Worst place for the profession and a true hell hole of an environment for OD's.
You may find the interviewers have a strong hatred for your employer, so don't let it bleed over into their opinion of you.

+1

Also realize you probably aren't really seeing full scope optometry being practiced. AMBest isn't optometry IMHO.

to answer your question, anything that is PAID is not categorized as shadowing on optomcas. that is put under employment. shadowing must be unpaid. so yeah, you'll need to take some vacation time from your 40 hour job to do some shadowing (or do it on weekend with a weekend opto)

and i quote optomcas instructions here:

Optometric Experience
All unpaid experience(s) within an optometric practice, such as shadowing/observation. One time experiences should be noted in the brief description section, leaving weekly hours blank.

Employment
All paid employment (optometric and non-optometric). Please list in chronological order from most recent to least recent and include a brief description of your responsibilities.
