I have a few questions....

Do many schools really focus on working or doing something health related before jumping into the field of publich health? I am a senior right now looking at schools but I would rather just go straight into graduate school. Im just very confused and don't really know where to begin researching schools or programs.

Does anyone have any information on programs to do (paid or unpaid) thats not peace corp or americorp?

If you don't do something health related, what else is the school really looking for? (besides your typical GPA, GRE, etc. )

Also, how are the interviews?

thanks guys!

Yeah many schools look at experience to get in their programs, however there are some that don't look at experience and are willing to give students some base knowledge and skills impt. for a career in public health. I am a student at Loma Linda UNIv. and I had no previous experience with public health even if I worked at a retirement home. I just had to tell them why I would like to enter public health.

IF you are looking for public health jobs, sure you can volunteer or intern at your local health department or find an NGO in your area. OF course, it depends on which major you have.

Hihi Belle4,

I worked part-time as a volunteer as a sexual assault counselor - we had a variety of duties including counseling, providing legal advocacy, and community education. There are many opportunities out there if you know where to look - planned parenthood might be another place to check out. I hope this helps!
