Someone told me that some schools have a very online-intensive curriculum during the first year - where you can basically take all your tests online, all the lectures are available online, and there are plenty of discussion forums. Of course you will need to go to labs and stuff like that, but most of the other stuff can be accomplished just from home and a computer.

Is this true or an urban legend? If there is an element of truth in this, it opens up the possibility of working during med school.

Any MS-1's please feel free to comment

As for exams I'm not sure, but at my school the lectures are powerpoint presentations and they have voice recordings on them that go along with the presentation. Everyone has different scheduling plans, but I guess it is possible to skip some class and work a little. Not personally something that would work for me though.

I don't think any school actually encourages this type of studying/test taking...but I'm sure it happens.

thats pretty cool

I think it's OSU (Ohio). They have two different curriculums (you choose), one of which is like that you described.

A lot of schools have note-taking services, lectures online, tests online, etc. It's certainly possible at some places to skip class and learn everything at home, but if you're getting something out of lecture, I don't think it's good to skip just so you can work.

Unless you're going somewhere like tufts where you have to borrow $200k, I'd just take out the loans. Especially if you're borrowing from the government/school at ~5%, you're almost making money from inflation. It's not worth it to work. If you have a wife and kids...well, ya gotta do what ya gotta do.
