After my freshmen year of college, I have received a 3.4 overall GPA and a 3.26 sGPA. I am very worried that this is way too low, and I have already screwed up my chances of getting into dental school.

After my 3rd semester I had something like a 3.3 overall and a 3.25 sGPA. I worked extra hard the following 3 semesters to make up for it and graduated (and applied) with much higher. You'll be fine - you just need to motivate yourself and work that much harder.

I agree study and do the work and your grades should go up. The higher the GPA, the less stress you'll have when you apply. You could also look at it as the beginning of a upward trend.🙂

dude,

even if u don't improve, youll still get into dental school with that gpa because it is the average at a lot of schools and above average at some too

Some people might disagree with me, but you should be more worried about having fun, learning new things about life and hopefully getting laid when possible. Of course study hard, but there is more to college than obsessing over a 3.4 GPA your first yr. There are plenty of 3.2 that had a great college experiences and get into dental school. Also, there are plenty of 3.7+ that didn't do anything in college but worry about class, and are not dentist because they are crappy people. Which life do you want? I'll take the one where my GPA was just OK, but damn I had fun.

Agreed! You'll only be young once and you should have a life outside of school. As for grades, its only your freshman year...you have plenty of time to pull your GPA up. Study hard and you can do it. After my first semester, my GPA was a 3.5 and I just graduated with highest distinciton offered by Purdue university (cGPA 3.952, sGPA 4.0).

The point is, enjoy life and study hard.

i had a 3.12 after two years of college. when i came back after a hiatus and finished up my degree in 3 years, my gpa went up to a 3.59. Not stellar, but considering what I had to improve upon, I'd say it is good.

Your doing better than me after the first year! I know were my mistakes were and im sure that u know also to help u do better in the future. My goal is a 4.0 this year but then again whose isnt?😀

i had a 2.2 gpa my freshman year

graduating this fall , but my current gpa is a 3.1 SGPA 3.8

Dental1988,
ur GPA is fine, as long as you keep improving in the following years, you will be good to go.
Im not sure about the myth of 3.3 getting into dental school though. Yes, people with those numbers may get in dental school (but usually from 1 or 2 out of 20 schools they applied, and they usually have to wait until May to know their fates). Again, keep up ur good work. Luck
