Worst semester in college?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think I got a 2.9 one semester 🙁. But I retook the class that got me there. And, I think the answer to where I'm going is pretty obvious.

If I get a C in my pre-reqs should I retake the class agian? Because I got a C in freshmen comp. I was wondering if thats going to be an important factor?

I got a 3.1 one quarter I think, so far I have been accepted to Case.

I had a 2.8 freshman year first semester.. i got into NYU and Buffalo

2.6 freshman year. Going to Marquette...

mine was 3.0 one of my winter semester...

1.8 winter quarter second year.

There were A LOT of circumstances. Never was even brought up at ANY of my interviews.

I was pretty much a straight A student (GPA of 3.9-4.0 every semester) from my freshman year to my junior year! My senior year was my WORST YEAR!!! I had three W my first semester with an GPA of 3.6 and my last semester was the worst ever! I made one C (FIRST C EVER IN MY LIFE b/c I was lazy!!) and my GPA was a 3.4!!!! 😱

But I am going to Columbia next fall so no biggie...

3.63 first semester. Baylor so far; waiting on Houston.

No. But I hang out here because people here are just cool.

Edit: I am just kidding. I did get into a few schools.

Lol thats pretty sweet, Im not in that bad of a situation that I got a 1.6, but man does that give me hope, I'm still a freshmen but just worried because my first semester didn't really go good. But next semester I plan on bringing everything up.
Did you have to do your masters? And did you get in after your junior yr or senior yr?

I didnt do postbac or masters or anything like that. I just got pretty much all As my last 2 years to boost my GPA to a competitive range. I applied my senior so I could have more As to improve my GPA. You can check my predent profile to find out more about me, its right under my avatar.

Yeah I saw it, you seem to be pretty rounded. So wait I don't get how dental school applications work, when do I start applying?

May 15th. But you might want to start asking your professors for letters before that.

So when do you find out you get in? And is that may 15th of Senior yr? And when do you actually start school? I got a 3.0 this semester and I didn't take any science classes, im starting to take my pre-reqs ans science classes my sophomore yr. I'm juts finishing off basic stuff first, hopefully that doesn't hurt me.

I applied around May 30th this year, and found out I got accepted to 4 schools on Nov. 30th. Dental school will actually start next year in July for me so I am taking a year off to work.

And as for science classes, 3 year is more than enough to take a decent number of BCP classes imo. I only took one chem and one math class freshmen year. (but I failed math, so I retook it later)

Lol you give me so much hope, how many schools did you apply to, you think someone with decent stats would get into a school id they apply to like 20 schools lol? Thats pretty cool that you got into a lot of schools. But what if I wanted to start dental school right away like right after my senior yr, do I apply the same time or earlier?

I applied to a little over 20 schools, so I think if your stats OK its def. doable.

However, if you want to start dental school right after you graduate, you need to apply at the end of your junior. The reason I didnt do that was because my GPA still wasn't competitive enough then and I needed an extra year to boost.

Man you inspire me! I feel like this might be my worst semester due to a lot of issues and circumstances so my GPA might end up being a 2.7. Im in the fall semester of my sophomore year and when i start applying I want to have at least 3.2. God willing I definatley will make it and get into dental school because it is my passion and I have faith! I never really thought about applying my senior year but that sounds really great to help build my GPA. Plus it could give a chance to do mission trips or serve my community before dental school! Im pm'ing you if you dont mind 🙂

No problem. I am addicted to SDN so I am pretty much always here year round.

I am really not all that. There are many others in this forum that overcame much more severe circumstances than me. I guess I was just lucky because I realized dentistry is my passion early enough, and therefore was able to pull up my grades without spending an extra year in masters/postbac.

Good luck to you. There are many wonderful people in this forum that are always willing to help.

Well I don't have any GPA problems to complain about. 3.5+ every quarter; admitted to several.

THEGAME102388 got a 2.67 his freshman year and he's STILL complaining about it. But he'll get in somewhere.

What is you AVG/BCP GPA?? How did you do on the DAT??? NYU and BUffalo is my first choices.... did you do any extra works??

Well at the end of this semester Im hoping to have a 3.4, you think that GPA with decent DAT scores and shadowing should get me in somewhere? Im also planning on applying at the end of my sophomore year because I want to try to get in a year early. Most schools require 90 semester hrs, so does that mean I have to have 90 semester hrs done by the time I apply? or can I apply while I finish up those 90 hrs?

There are certain schools that will want you to complete a 4 year bachelor before matriculation. (i.e. the earliest you can apply is after your 3rd year) For the schools that don't require that, you can apply after 2 years. You just gotta hav 90 units before you matriculate.

A 3.4 GPA and a decent DAT score is good enough to get you in somewhere. However, from my understanding the bar gets even higher for applicants who apply after 2 years of university. It's helpful to take additional upper division science classes and apply after your junior/senior year because those material will show up again on the DAT, and also in dental schools.

Hope this helps!

What is the worst semester you have ever had in college GPA wise? And which school have you gotten into?

1st semester sophomore year

GPA 0.0 (6 F's)

got into Nebraska and Colorado Nov. 30th first year trying (so anything is possible for those who think there's no hope 👍)

2.44 this semester....... slacked off too much after getting accepted......

Wow, and here I was mad that "slacked off" and got an A- after acceptance...YOU DA MAN!

Wow that is nuts, how many schools did you apply to ?

Argh!! I got a D in the class I repeated this semester making me have 2 D's on my transcript total!!! Still my worst semester was a 2.0 first semester of college (well only 10 credits were counted) with this being my second worst 🙁. Im gonna go back to school with a goal to live in the library and not let things get to me like this semester...👍

Wow that is nuts, how many schools did you apply to ?

I mistakenly applied to 6 schools (I thought you had to apply to at least 5)...heard from 2 schools (interviewed and accepted at both)...proof positive schools don't just look at GPA for acceptance (even if they are known to have the highest GPA's out of all dental schools...check the rankings at predents.com). However, I consider myself extremely fortunate which may explain why I applied to an extra school just in case :luck:.

That is pretty awesome, what stats did you end up with?

Well... no complaints about grades (3.7 was lowest, junior year the semester I took organic 2), but I didn't start shadowing dental offices until almost senior year. Got into UMKC, though.

Does anyone here know if I'm calculating my GPA correctly?

Im a freshmen I got a 3.0 first semester. And the way they calculate it at most schools is what ever grade you get multiply by the number of hrs your taking that class and add up everytdo the same for every class add them up and divide by the number of credit hrs. But I was wondering how they do it for the whole year. Like for example do they do it the same way they did it for me 1st semester? or do they just add up first semester GPA and 2nd semester GPA and divide by 2?

I'm not sure what your specific rules are for GPA but pretty sure it's universal throughout most colleges...

If so, use this:
http://www.baylor.edu/academic_advisement/index.php?id=3169
Read the guidelines on how to calculate your cGPA.

I suggest creating a GPA "road map" to figure out what GPA you'll arrive at after some semesters.

Wow Suzan thanks thats really helpful, ill save the site, and btw its the same way at UT but we dont have the B+ C+ stuff. Btw would you happen to know how to do it for the whole year? Like what do I do to find out my GPA for the whole yr?

lol what were your other stats like dat and extra curricular?

btw does anyone know if going to a small univeristy hurts your chances on getting into certain dental schools?

theres no way that is possible because I think my 90 year old grandma can do better than that and she doesn't speak english.

I have a feeling........and I had a dream about this b4 (serious).....it could be because you signed up for classes at a certain college and forgot you did so you never attended your classes therfore you ended up with all Fs. 😀
