Interview: "I feel like giving a spot to someone who wants to go into healthcare policy would be a waste of a seat."

Me: "Clearly this institution, which claims to train physician leaders, is not for me. Thank you, and have a good day."

Yes, I left in the middle of the interview.

The joy of holding acceptances.

I cry foul. Either you overreacted and didn't want to go to the school anyway or you're being a bit presumptious. You shouldn't pass judgement on a school based on interacting with one individual. Many interviewers are purposely antagonistic.

Interviewer at Albany: How do you think you can possibly compete with a 22 year olds mind?

me (age 37, 3.75 undergrad, 3.96 grad -PhD, presently teach 1st year med students histology)

 The real question should have been, "How do they think a 22 year old's mind can compete with yours!! I can't believe they were so stupid to ask you that.

Thanks! I was really pissed-

So I arrive at his office, we shake hands, he offers me a seat:

interviewer: "So, I hated your personal statement"

me: "um"

interviewer: "I mean, everyone knows someone who died" (I mentioned my younger sibling who died a few years ago, but that wasn't all my ps was about!)

me: "I am sorry that you feel that way. I understand that everyone knows someone who has died. Yet I wrote about it because it was a huge moment in my personal development"

interviewer: "hmm. So how would you go about setting up a universal healthcare system? Wait, specifically, how would you distribute 100 doses of viagra among people of different groups?"

me: "Well, I believe that basic medical care should be provided to all people, but viagra is not a necessary medical treatment . . .

interviewer: (cutting me off) "Men's sexual health is extremely important, it is essential and necessary!"

me: "Oh, okay"

It went on like that for over an hour. I really liked the guy, but he was a very difficult interviewer!

I swear this really happened!!!

Why did you really like him? Sounds like a jerk, or at least someone who was pretending to be a jerk.

Good story, though. I love this thread!

I probably wouldn't have continued past that. Honestly, it's not someone you knew, it was a sibling.

I made the commitment to myself that I would walk out of any stress interviews after my first acceptance. Frankly, I've had resistance training, so I've been taught how to handle much worse interrogation than an aging out of shape faculty member can provide, anyway, but the fact that they take that route, despite the obvious lack of need to prove that I can handle stress, shows that I don't want to go there.

i feel like believing you, but noooo? Did you really do that?

no, i made it up to impress people i've never met.

why in christ's sake would i make a story like that up?

i mean i clearly got rejected from the school, it's not like i did this and still got in or something.

Thanks for the useless assessment of a scenario you can't possible know as much about as I do.

And no, the lady was not purposelfully antagonistic. She truly believed that this school - a state institution - had no role training anyone who wasn't going into clinical medicine.

It is wise to withold comment about things when you don't know all the details. That, my friend, is presumptuous.

That's the best thing they can say. If you're a little weak here and there, but they like you, you're in. If you're strong here and there, but they don't like you, you're out. Getting the interviewer to like you is the most important part.

That is hilarious.

After about 115 minutes of conversation..... my interviewer finally goes: "yea, I can tell, you're going to be very successful (me: YES!)... no matter where you go to med school ( me: noooooooooooooooo! ) It was great talking with you and good luck!" This was cutting an hour into lunch and my stomach was grumbling during the second half and my mouth was running dry from talking so much....
