IS IT WORTH FLYING OUT TO UNIV OF PITTSBURGH FOR AN INTERVIEW FROM CA? I'VE BEEN ACCEPTED TO TEMPLE ARLEADY, BUT REPUTATION WISE, WHICH IS BETTER? IF UP IS A GOOD SCHOOL, I WILL DEFINITELY DISH OUT $300 TO GO.

THANKS!

First of all, see that button to the left of the "A" key? Yeah, we'd appreciate it if you would press that key to turn off the little light under the "Caps Lock" LED above your keypad.

Now, back to the matter at hand. How do you like Temple? This schools is notoroious for having an excellent clinical program. There is no doubt that you will graduate from there as an excellent clinician, provided you do your part to learn the intricacies of the profession.

If you really feel like you will enjoy Temple and can see yourself being there for 4 years, why waste your time and money to go to UPitt. I'm not saying UPitt is a bad school, because it is also very good. Is it as good as Temple? Clinically I would deduce no. This is only based on what students from Temple, who have visited Temple, and people who know Temple.

The $300 can go either way. It can be a lot of money, in the sense that it can go towards food, rent, supplies, utilities, etc. in Phili. However, $300 can really not mean much at all. Especially, since in the long run we'll be ahead of all our investments from undergrad and during dental school.

Once again, just letting you know that Temple is regarded as a very fine school, and consider yourself in a very good position.

Naomi,

If it is any consolidation to you, several of our instructors this semester have been from Pitt, and they have been fairly good. We've had three from Pitt, to be exact. Does this mean all their instructors are good? Doubtful. Does this mean that Temple's faculty aren't good? Once again, nope.

If you have the cash and the time, then I'd fly out there. What if the school far surpasses your expectations? You'll never know unless you visit and find out it is for you.

And, you'll love the AZ weather compared to Pitt and Temple!

Hello,

I have recently been accepted to Pitt and will be attending there next fall. Originally, Pittsburgh was one of my top choices mainly because I am from PA and live only about 5 hrs. from the University. But since I visited the school, it has become my top choice for many other reasons.

Here were some of the things I thought were nice:

1.) All Faculty I met were very friendly and seemed like they cared for the students.

2.) New SimLab for pre-clinic

3.) Living in the Pittsburgh area is fairly inexpensive. (if you would like the rates, I will post them)

4.) Pittsburgh is a wonderfully cultured area with TONS of stuff to do. While I was there, my family and I spent the day at the Carnige Museum of Natural History.

5.) the University is in a WAY safer place than Temple ( I didn't even apply to Temple or UPenn because of Philly). Here are some of the figures they gave us at my Pitt interview:

Philly/ Pittsburgh

Robberies 10,425 / 1,587

Rapes 1,021 / 128

Homicides 319 / 37

Vehicle Theft 16,147 !!!! / 2,503

(Raw numbers as reported by the FBI for the year 2001)

6.) and of course, last but not least...Pitt offers the DMD degree. EVERYONE knows that DMD's are better than DDS'. Hell, a DDS isn't even allowed to prescribe medication!! Oh..My...God...I AM JUST KIDDING!

Best of luck to you wherever you decide to go! Send me private message if you need any more info!

hey drpheta
i'm thinking about going to temple next year. what do you mean by "do your part to learn the intricacies of the profession?"
thanks

As for "do your part to learn the intricacies of the profession," I mean don't expect to be spoon fed the material and techniques while in school.

I know it sounds trivial, but you'd be surprised at how many dental students whine about there being "too much material" and how "the material is too hard."

With all due respect, dental school material is no harder than undergraduate. The approach to learning, on the other hand, is different. As a result, one needs to work hard to get the results they desire. NOTHING WILL BE SPOON FED, as it was in undergrad, if it was in undergrad.

That's why I said, "There is no doubt that you will graduate from there as an excellent clinician, provided you do your part to learn the intricacies of the profession." This is because Temple sets up the cirriculum in a way that allows for efficient learning (not spoon feeding).

I hope I made my point clear. Good luck wherever you go.

gotcha. thanks!

osushi girl: I got a very different impression of Pittsburgh:

The sim labs were very nice, but you pay for them ($50+ plus/year). I felt the faculty was a bit under prepared for the interview process, and the school overall seemed disorganized and a bit pushy.

Pittsburgh may be fairly inexpensive, but there isn?t really much to do in the town. Most of the area surrounding Oakland is run down and old, if not condemned, and the number of young people in Pittsburgh is ridiculously low?.Pittsburgh seems to be another city affected by the brain drain (Ie: Indianapolis, St. Louis, and Cincinnati)?and I cannot imagine buying property in the area, especially since it was highly recommended by the financial aide office.

These numbers are almost three years old, and Philadelphia is well over three times bigger than Pittsburgh. I thought it was funny that the school handed this information out. By their standards, Pittsburgh kicks Baltimore, Boston, and Clevelands collective a$$.

I?m not trying to demean Pittsburgh by any means, I think it?s a good school (just expensive) and you?ll get a wonderful education if you go there. I enjoyed my time there and saw the city. I just think osushi girl could use another perspective.

is pitt problem based?

They kill that many gays in Philly each year?

again, anyone know if pitt has a problem based learning curriculum? and dont say pitt has problems based on learning.

Upitt incorporates pbl into the traditional didactic program, so you get the best of both worlds. You will undoubtedly receive a wonderful education at either institution. I had to make a similar decision to the one you are faced with?.Do I go to Pitt, Temple, or do I stay in Cali and go to USC?? I was accepted to each and I chose PITT. I wouldn?t change my decision for anything. Pittsburgh is an awesome school and city. I can?t really speak about Temple, because I didn?t go there, but here at Pitt the faculty is amazing. I have tremendous respect for all my professors as you genuinely feel they will go the extra mile to mold you into a great Dentist. The facilities are amazing and you may pay for them as a previous poster mentioned, but you do get what you pay for and here you get amazing facilities. One other thing, you may get this at other schools, but here at PITT you become part of a family. The upperclassmen look out for you like you are their younger siblings. And, your class will bond too?So, hey, you are going to spend a tremendous amount of money while in Dental school, why not spend a few dollars and check out a top notch school!

Pitt sucks - lets be real about it... yeah, they're pimping their simlab, and their anesthesiology training, and their revamped football program, and the cultural experiences so on.

So F'ing what?

Your not even going to want to leave the house when it's freezing balls outside (doesnt the sun shine like 65 days a year there?).

Actually, I can see it now- it's wet, cold, icy (basically nasty) and you're gonna pack up junior and the Mrs for a nice day out on the town. About the only thing you're going to pack-up are a few more unwanted pounds in the lower abdominal area (you and your Mrs). maybe Pitt should pimp this: "come to Pitt and increase your central obesity"

oh yeah, and hey aaron, it's fools like you that will sign there name Dr. aaron so and so, DMD.

dude, get over the letters following your name, and the degree being offered. you are likely the same type of egotistical bastard that will look down on anyone below you (ie, anyone who isnt a doctor) but deep down inside will have an inferiority complex to physicians b/c they are mighty MD's and not "just" DDS/DMD's.

whao there, a little harsh man, all schools try to sell what they got and so should pitt. and why so down on aaron? he was just pointing out what he thought was good about pitt for himself. and i think the whole dds dmd was a joke.... just chill out.

Haha, thanks for the candid response there Gavinc. I think private schools really try to sell themselves...and they should, it's damn expensive to go to a school like pitt/case/bu. Pitt could be a good school for the right person, it?s just not the right one for me. .

Hey Zurich5, Pitt isn't a private school dude...
jojo

jojo,
I know, the difference between instate and out of state tuition at pitt is pretty negligible though. So, I?ve always considered it a private school. Plus it?s $50K/year for in-state residents?which is really high.

dinonuggets

Don't be mean to me, I was just joking about the DMD DDS thing.

And please do not judge me when you do not even know me. I am more humble about receiving professional eduaction than you willl ever know.

Good luck to you in the dental profession. I have a feeling you will need it.

Zurich5,
I know that you got accepted to Pitt last Friday. Have you received the letter of acceptance yet or just found it out via infosource? I found out I've been accepted via infosource. Is an official letter coming soon?

Yes, you will get a letter soon....good luck.

Zurich5,
Do you think that their mail got lost and couldn't reach me? It's been a week already. According to Pitt's web site, when an offer is made to an applicant, the school will contact the applicant via phone first. But I haven't received a phone call or mail from them.

Zurich5,
Forget my previous post. I've just received the big envelope today. The reason I'm worried is I lost mail a couple times. My USC invitation came to someone else's mailbox and was thrown on the ground next to a trash can.
