100+ shadowing hours, 100+ EC hours, DAT 20AA, 2.9 ogpa, and 2.6sgpa...

would it be completely worthless to take my chances in applying this summer? (I graduate this May..majored in Psychology.. so I guess if I did a Masters in that there would be no point if I'm trying to raise my science gpa.. but would another year of science courses increase it a good amount?)

Any opinions appreciated.. Thanks

PostBacc or Masters are both good ideas. Your chances are very slim unless you have an amazing DAT score.

I would recommend doing a masters though.

I would recommend VERY strongly to raise your GPA before applying. i seen plenty of people with less than 3.0 GPA and above 22AA DAT not get a single interview. so yea. another year of classes will help. show upper trend. good luck

😳 Thanks..would one more year be enough to raise it though?

Since you are a major in psychology it depends on how many science classes you have taken already. If you take 3 science courses each semester for 2 semesters, 6 science classes (assuming all A's) should bring it up to about a 3-3.1ish depending on how many science classes you have taken already. Plus getting anything above a 3.8+ in a universities postbacc looks very good. Ive seen people on here with under 3's who get 3.8-4.0 and get accepted into dental schools.

I think I've taken 10 courses so far.. and 2 at the moment.. so 12.. not including labs..

K so assuming I did this right, 12 total courses with a 2.6 science gpa. 6 courses of 4.0 will bring you up to a 3.2. However it will be lower since labs are factored in. So figure around a 3.1. Even though that seems low, a 4.0 postbacc makes a student very competitive

I have a low undergrad GPA, and I completed a Master's. I would think about something that you can do with your Master's if it takes a couple cycles to get accepted (after you complete it) I think that my undergrad GPA is still a drag on my app even with a Master's and a bunch of extracurriculars. Just my 2 cents!

Can you retake those classes that are dragging down your GPA before graduation (and have the initial grade replaced)?

If so, you may not want to graduate in May since many schools won't allow your grades to be "replaced" once you graduate.

Is that what they do? I think at my school, if you retake a course, they take the average of the two courses and add that to your gpa. But then again, my advisor also said that they just add that retake course in with all the other pile of courses. So I'm not sure how that works.. Do you know how AADSAS grades it?

And I'm most likely going to retake Orgo 1 n 2, since I got a C+ and C, respectively. The other courses I plan on taking are just advanced biology courses (Neuro, Endocrinology..etc.)

I also have another question. Would having a separate post-bacc gpa look better or worse, than retaking classes during undergrad?

btw. this site is just simply awesome. I just wish I discovered the wonders of it earlier..

Different schools may do it differently. You probably need to ask your registrar's office.

If they are undergraduate level courses, I don't know what difference it would make in the end, but if they were higher level courses (even though they wouldn't be true 'repeats') it might look better. A Master's degree might be the way to go.

Whe applying, they will calculate your GPA based on both the original grade and the new grade, so you cannot wipe out or replace a bad grade in its entirety.

• ADEA AADSAS includes ALL initial AND repeated coursework in its GPA calculations.
• Grades and credit hours for all FAILED courses will be included in the ADEA AADSAS GPA, even if they are not included in the GPA calculations of the transcript-issuing institution.
• ADEA AADSAS automatically converts quarter hours to semester hours (Quarter Hour x .67). For example a 5 quarter credit hour course will be converted by ADEA AADSAS to 3.33 semester hours.
• The following course types are not included in ADEA AADSAS GPA calculations.
o Advanced Placement
o CLEP
o Audit
o International Baccalaureate
o Incomplete
o Pass/Fail
o Withdraw/Withdraw Passing
o Withdraw/Failing

It is awesome 😉

Just out of curiosity, what do you consider amazing DAT scores?
I consider 20 to be competitive with an average GPA.
nything over 23 to be very good.
25+ to be amazing

Edit:
Wrong word lol (DAT instead of gpa)

Also, OP:
It depends what your GPA trend is. If you started pulling 1.5's your first 2 semesters and 3.8s your last 2 years, you can still have a decent chance to getting into dental school.
