Hey guys, apparently a job just opened for a cardiac technician job in my area.

I am wondering would this be a good opportunity to get some clinical experience?

I am 100% a predental student, but would they like that I worked in a medical environment and in a clinical setting?

Or would I be better off just volunteering at a hospital?

It looks like research won't be possible this summer.

Thanks for the opinions!

It might come in handy if an instructor was to have an MI.

if it will pay the bills then take the job.

between finishing undergrad and starting grad school (had a semester off) i worked for a company doing tissue disections (mitral valve and popliteal veins) for cryo-preservation. sure it has nothing to do with dentistry but i know the heart anatomy like the back of my hand. i also learned how to do a few of the basic sutures i'm sure i'll be learning in DS. basically i'm saying you should take the job if it sounds like you would enjoy it. you never know what you'll take away from it that you could apply towards your dental career.

Yeah, but I don't actually need it to pay the bills. I am leeching off my parents right now.

I would take the job. It sounds like a very good experience and even though it may not be dental related, it will give you exposure to the health environment and may even be a good thing to talk about during interviews. It will also help create some diversity in a field full of pre-dents with just dental experience.

Any job in the health field is going to be relevant in some way to dentistry. The more involved the job, usually the better. Technician jobs are great because they don't require much education and they usually entail interactions with patients (probably not in your case however.) I am a tech at a dialysis clinic putting needles in people, manual skills ftw.

you sound nice and all, but i just can't take you seriously with that photo. pah.

I would take the job, yeah its not dentistry, but it will be an experience that you will have to compare to dentistry, which reassures you that dentistry is right for you. That is the angle you would want to work during your future admissions interview.

LOL, did you forget about the med school rejects and their hospital experiences.:laugh::laugh::laugh:

Wow, thanks for all the responses, people.

I will certainly consider it.

Hahaha, so true. I started working dialysis pre-med. In fact, working there is what made me change my mind about med. 🙄

That is actually a picture of Jim Carey about 15 years ago!
