When applying to the dental schools, would having another minor or major give you an advantage?

I am currently a public health major and am thinking about also minoring in business too.

I mean I can do it, but I might have a really tight schedule to complete the requirements.

But is it worth it? Should I rather use my time in research and other extracurricular activities? Would having an extra minor would help me get into a dental school? What do yoy think?

I just recently asked the school I'm looking at about this. I only have two more classes to take to minor in spanish but it would tighten my load too. I asked them about it and they said it really wouldn't change my application much. They said they put more emphasis on GPA, upper level science classes (i.e. Biochemistry, upper level Bio classes) and DAT scores than any thing else. Those are the parts of your app that show how you will perform the first couple years of D school. In the end, a minor in anything non-science related doesn't really do much. Of course every school could be different.

You should do another major or minor if you enjoy those classes or if you think it'll help you run your practice (so business might be a good idea). Just so you know, there isn't even a section on AADSAS to put down any minors (though it will be on your transcript if the schools you're applying to request one and you can always mention it in your interview). I would agree with the above poster and concentrate on your sGPA and upper level sciences and THEN stress out about another major/minor.

a minor will definitely help with your chances of getting into dental school. Although it's not going to make you stand out but it is certainly better than having just a minor.
But keep in mind that you need to keep your GPA up, there is no excuse of dropping your GPA just because you decided to do an extra minor. That could work against you.

I was originally a Chem major, but I picked up Bio as my minor since D school loves Bio classes.

Good Luck!

I think an awesome predent major would be fine arts....granted you ace all science coursework. It will make you stand out in a sea of bio majors I guarantee that.

which school did u ask?

Dental schools are always looking for well-rounded individuals, so pursue a minor that interests you if you have time. However, don't do it if you're already super-crammed and at the expense of your grades. If you think you can make time, then definitely do it, for your own benefit. I did a minor in biology, and it helped me out tremendously in dealing with the didactic classes during the first two years of dental school. They will breeze through the classes very quickly, so it's best if you have a strong bio background.

But minoring in business...that is also a terrific idea. They really don't teach that at all in dental school, and you really really do need to know how to run your own business/office once you're out.

I’ve heard the same things as well.

When all those things are equal, then things like extra minors come into play, but are really only like icing on the cake.

I took some extra psych classes in my freshman year. Liked them so much, I turned them into a minor. Then I couldn’t stop and turned it into a second major. However because it sometimes got in the way of my major classes (bio), it probably hurt me a little more in the long run by slightly lowering my GPA.

Only do it if you like the classes your going to take rather than trying to impress the dental school. They really don't care or take it into consideration.

It may help a bit only as long as all of your other stats are good. If not, it will be meaningless.
