Would it be crazy to apply to all 25 DO schools?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
people apply to 25 MD schools all the time, so it doesn't seem that crazy...

If you have the money, time and patients why not? It's probably a little over kill but it can't hurt.

If you truly want to go to whichever one that accepts you, then it is not crazy.

But it is a waste of time/energy/money to apply to all schools. Only apply to the schools you really like (if you have good stats).

Consider this, would you want to spend four years in all of those places? If not, then don't apply there. I think it's a better idea applying to ten places you'd actually go to then 25 just to make sure you get in someplace. I know it's early in the application process, but you're going to spend a ton of money on applications and traveling for interviews, so I'd really recommend only applying to places you'd consider going to.

Watch out for some of the schools, OSU, OU are very instate heavy. MSU too I think. So, you might better your situation applying to roughly 20. That's my take.

I would advise you to apply to schools that you actually see yourself attending. If it is all 25, and you can tell each school why you want to go there rather than somewhere else than so be it. Good luck when you apply!

Yea I guess I guess I'm just getting worried about not getting in anywhere.

I took the April MCAT and when I was preparing my scores on AAMC practice tests ranged from 22 to 27 (the last one I took was a 27). I wound up getting a 22 (7,6,9).

So Im retaking in July and got a 31 last week on a kaplan, but I feel like I am so inconsistent that Im getting kind of nervous.

The reason I was thinking about applying to ALL of the schools was because I would rather go to any of them before I have to go to Ross or St. Georges...

BTW
My gpa is a 3.65 (science and cum)
Decent clinical and volunteer work
Good letters of rec
Played college baseball (for a year)

Absolutely insane. Unless you have the (1) time (i.e., have *nothing* else to do but work on applications), (2) energy, and (3) incredible organizational skills, you'll get no benefit out of it. The quality of your applications (particularly the supplementals), will suffer immensely.

Go for quality, not quantity.

Stop studying for the MCAT, maybe about 2 weeks from the test, but don't take anymore practice tests. You already know what the test is going to be like. You clearly can perform, but you're probably freaking yourself out just because it's the real thing. Relax. (Disclaimer: Judge for yourself if this makes sense.) And if you don't get in this year, Don't. Worry. About. It. Be patient if you have to. I know 5 doctors (at least) that didn't get in the first time they applied, and they all performed excellently once they got in.

The thing is I'm already graduated and even entering in 08 will be taking a year off...

So taking 2 years off would just be way to long you know?

Your GPA is pretty good, so that helps your chances a lot. I agree with the poster above who said to stay away from OSU, OU and MSU because of in-state preference. I applied to 21 schools, I was super organized (it is not too hard to be) and it cost me money, but I love the school I got into, and I would do it again if I had to. Good luck.

It took me 4 years of applications to get into medical school. Granted I didn't do it the "right" way. But I did keep applying, and in the meantime I got a MSPH and other activities that taught me a lot and boosted my resume. Just keep it up!

Don't apply everywhere, unless you want to go everywhere, wheetle down your list to 12 and really work on convincing those schools they are where you need to be.

I think you should apply to all of them, it can't hurt. The only thing it does is give you more chances to get in somewhere! it's not crazy at all; lots of people apply to all the DO schools plus that many MD schools or more. But, don't waste your time applying to them if you think you really wouldn't want to go there.

Then make good use of the time you have. IMHO, trying to fulfill the app requirements for 25 schools will spread you way too thin.

Well I've narrowed it down to 15 based on location.

How time consuming are the secondaries anyways? What exactly do they entail?

It isn't insane to apply to 25 schools, but it's a waste of money & time if you know you won't go there - no way, no how. If you think you would be willing to go there if you HAD to, just apply because you can always turn down interviews if you're accepted somewhere else first.

A lot of people apply to 25 schools or so. Usually it is a mix of MD & DO schools, but what's the difference? 25 applications, fees, secondaries....
Actually the DO application fees are cheaper anyway.

Usually the DO schools want to know why you want to go to their school. Why are you interested in osteopathy? UMDNJ was different, and DMU didn't have a required essay last year. UNE wants you to list everywhere you've ever applied. CCOM wanted a CV, which seemed silly. Look up the essays thread from last year - that'll give a good idea.

Every one of them is different. Some are online; some ar on paper. Some schools let everyone fill them out; others let you know if they want one from you. Most of them have short paragraphs or essays about why you want to go to their school and why you want to be a DO. The only thinkgthey really, really have in common is that they usually cost $50 or more each. 15 of them would run you $750 to $1,000. The average person only applies to about 6 schools. Keep in mind that some people apply to one school and some people apply to twenty, though. Yet, with lower stats, your best strategy is to apply to as many as you can realistically afford. But, make the ones you apply to "realistic" ones by eliminating schools that you have a smaller chance of getting into-- schools with higher in-state acceptances, for example, if your are an OOS student. :luck:

I thought it was 26 schools....my bad if I can't count.

i'll say no unless you are an oklahoma resident or have killer stats. OSUCOM gives major priority to in-state. otherwise, heck yeah apply broadly! good luck!
