What is your favorite writing utensil? I am a huge fan of yellow, wooden pencils. I think they are more cost efficient than mechanical pencils, and if you leave one in your pocket, your clothes will be fine after washing.

Hate mechanical pencils, I prefer those jumbo foot long pencils 😉

I always use Mech. Pencils. But I go through them fast, so I get those little dinky ones in boxs of 50.

I use mechanical pencils for homework because it seems to erase easier than regular wooden pencils do, but I use pens for taking notes because it's more permanent and won't smear like pencil sometimes does.

I can't stand using anything except a mech. pencil. The sound of a regular (wooden) pencil's eraser makes my head want to explode. It's all scratchy and dry:bang:...my version of fingernails/chalkboard.

Easily mechanical pencil. I don't like regular pencils since they are more prone to breaking. I own a few really nice mechanical pencils. Well I think they're really nice for their price.

Pen.

Everything I write is done by a blue bic pen. I haven't used anything else since 4th grade.

For math classes and physics, i use mechanical .7 lead. For all others, Pilot G-2 are where it's at.

I used to love using mechanical pencils, but if you leave your notebooks in your backpack, the pencil lead will rub all over the pages and get really ugly looking. Now (even for math/chemistry/physics problems) I always use pen.

Pilot Precise V7 rolling ball pens, also the G-2 as mentioned is a favorite of mine. When I don't feel like a pen, I love the classic yellow pencils as well.

I never ever use pencil except when required on exams; it's always a black pen for me.

Like many of you, I like the Pilot G2 but I only use it on special occasions or to sign my name! With the amount of notes I have to take or writing I have to do for homework and miscellaneous tasks, the gel runs out too quickly. So for all those things, I use regular-ink ball-point pens.

This is the NERDIEST. THREAD. EVER.

Pencil (Pentel .5 quicker) most of the time

Pen (uni-ball Signo 207) when its necessary, easier to grab, or when I'm feeling saucy.

Bic Round Stic Grip. Rolls on smooth, requiring precious little pressure to write. It's my favorite pen for writing and sketching.

I'm also a big fan of Dixon Ticonderoga #2 pencil.😍

But that's just me...

I can't stand using anything except a mech. pencil. The sound of a regular (wooden) pencil's eraser makes my head want to explode. It's all scratchy and dry:bang:...my version of fingernails/chalkboard.
Have you tried Pink Pearl erasers? They don't harden and erase beautifully. They're also very, very cheap and can be bought just about anywhere! Also an option: Staedtler (not cheap, but very effective).

I'm an artist. What's your excuse?:meanie::laugh:👍

I perfer mechanicl pencils.

Whenever I use a pen I twirl it and click it absent mindedly and end up with ink marks all over my hand.

i hate pencil and crappy ballpoint pens. gel ink looks nice, but runs out too quickly.

i prefer pens with liquid ink. my favorite is uniball vision in black. i like the crisp dark lines.

What kind of pocket protectors do you guys like?😍

like many above, pilot G2 all the way =)

For the last 3 years I used Papermate GeForce mech pencils with .5mm lead and medium ink with stainless steel tubes. Now I'm into the Pentel EnerGel and EnerGize pencil .5mm. You guys are write (haha, get it?) about the gel running out quickly though... my black EnerGel is already empty!

i use crayons

I use my wacom stylus and my tablet pc. It doesn't smudge and I can search my notes later.

When I have to write I like pen or mechanical pencil. I can't stand a dull pencil.

Nice...dual duty utensils are the way for me. Generally I prefer the 'stabby' pens over the ball point but I'll have to look into this.

No idea why people prefer pens. You can't erase! It's a clear disadvantage.. I hate pens.

bic black for biochem - have to draw accurately but the pen gives good width for drawing structures

original #2 bic .7mm mechanical pencil. i consolidate my lead into one pencil instead of having 10 different pencils. i also consolidate the erasers. nothing like a good luck pencil.

I've only got a usb wacom tablet, so that rules out notes. I still love it to death, though!

Which is why I make sure to write things correctly the first time!

Advantages of pens vs pencils include that pen ink is darker and bolder than pencils, and pen ink will not smudge over time or onto your hands (assuming it's dried).

And you dont have to press as hard if youre using a liquid-ink based pen, reducing hand strain over time 😀😀😀

Wow this is really the nerdiest thread ever.

Pretty much the only pen I ever use is the Pilot precise v5 rt. I used v5's for the longest time (they really are the best) but the rt gives it to you in a retractable, refillable version. Its heaven. 👍

You barely have to press at all with the round stic grips. They are awesome ballpoints, I swear. Also, they are dirt cheap. You should try them~!😍

Black wooden Ticonderoga pencil, Pilot pen with black ink. Only black ink.

I'm a little weird... I like those four-color pens, so if something's really important in lecture, I can highlight it by writing in a different color 😀

Mechanical Pencil.. if and only if it uses 0.5 mm lead!
0.7 lead makes me cringe.

I used to hate mechanical pencils, but now I can't use anything else. I press really hard when I write, so I just get the .7mm thick pencils. I used to be a big fan of pens (they had to be black ink and very fine tips), but just this semester I've become a huge mechanical pencil person. I only use pen when I have to (unfortunately, on my ochem exams they make us write in pen).

I don't know how you guys can write with that 0.5. I grabbed one of my girlfriend's 0.5 penciles on the way out the door last week and the whole day went like this:

scribble,scribble *SNAP*🙁 *click**click*
scribble,scribble *SNAP*😡 *click**click*
scribble,scribble *SNAP*:bang: *click**click*

I use Pentel techniclick II .5 mechanical pencil, Pilot G-2 pens, and Sharpie yellow highlighters.

I feel like such a nerd, because I was excited to see this thread. I am OCD about my writing utensils.

Whenever I write, I meticulously carve all of my answers into raw animal hide. My professors don't take me lightly.

Wooden pencils are unacceptable waste of resources. Why waste trees when you can buy mechanical pencils? There are no advantages to wooden pencils and if you use your mechanical pencil for a while, it will end up costing less than the wood pencil because lead refills are cheaper and utilized close to 100%. It's good that only 5% or so in here use wood. Let it stay in your pocket.

I do my exams in blood. Not mine of course, that'd just be stupid.

Apparently you lack the magical touch required. Sorry!

I think wooden pencils write better than mechanicals, but require a sharpener...

Pens are alright, but you need to get the perfect pen, if you know what i mean.....(ink pens are nice but bleed through paper, ball points don't but don't look as nice, so i think i'd have to go with the middle ground...gel-type pens? not those gelly roll ones)
btw do they still make those? i remember they weren't allowed in my grade school during the big gelly roll pen fad because kids kept stealing them from eachother lol
