this much ( __________________________________________________________ )

Not at all... As long as you can explain them

Dude, it's not the end of the world. Just be able to explain them and you'll be fine.

I had two. One in a science class 😱
I only got asked about it once and told them the class simply wasn't what I thought it would be. Seemed to be okay by them.

I withdrew from a whole quarter and so far I've got 4 acceptances. Don't sweat it.

2 W's, both in non science and no one asked.

not at all

i had two, one for family disaster (car accident on the freeway in LA) and one for a lab class that i withdrew from for back problems. i even had a D on my record from summer after freshman. i still interviewed at some top schools. the D was mentioned once but brushed aside.

i had two W's... one cos my stats profs were complete nut jobs and i knew i should take the class from someone else, and one cos i got held up outside the country for immigration issues. never got mentioned at interview. don't sweat it, life happens.

I read a thread like this on another forum and I think the general consensus there was also that it didn't really matter, as long as you could explain them.

I have one on my record in a PE class because I was an idiot and took a rock-climbing class when I'm horribly afraid of heights. As long as your reason isn't as dumb as that you should be fine.

I had one W and no one asked me about it. Just make sure you have a reason if someone does. Good luck.

a "W" is not a number, so the admissions committee won't even be able to look at it. They are blind to letters of any sort.

I had one the first semester of my freshman year and nobody asked about it. However, if your W's are in something like organic chem or another class that's important, be prepared to explain it.

I had 3 W's. One was in a science course. Never got a question about any of them and got in to all but one of the schools I applied to. My undergrad advisor said it can actually be a good sign. It shows someone has the wisdom to "know when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em." I'd never thought of it that way before but I guess she was right.

You are not screwed. Just don't take any more. Even then, it would not be fatal, but the fewer you have the better. Make sure you have good explanations, like others have suggested. Personal illness, family illness, etc are all pretty valid reasons for a W. I took a W just because I couldn't stand listening to the senile professor. That was a bad reason.

See ADCOM's, think in GPA's and MCAT scores. This is why your essay score on the MCAT is equally as useless. If perhaps, they designed a system where a W meant a -.33 for that semester, then hey would notice. When it comes down to it, sadly enough, it is merely a numbers game.

My fiance, who also posts here, had a W in Organic Chemistry and got into Hopkins and Cornell.

Has anything changed in the four years since this thread?

I have two withdraws, one in Calc II, one in a metabolism course.

The first one I bombed the first test, and dropped. I dropped metabolism even though I got one of the highest grades in the class on the first test, because the professor was a complete nutjob I felt like I would be playing Russian roulette with my grade.

Three interviews so far and still waiting to hear from about half of my schools.

Don't sweat it.
