I don't understand how we are suppose to attend an out of state school when the tuition is upwards of $75,000 per year for out of state applicants I've heard. Federal Stafford loans max out at just under $40K so where will the other half come from. Do they trap you into working some rural job or do you have to go military I mean. Physicians make good money but it won't matter if you owe $300,000 in student loans. The only thing you will end up with in the end is an awesome education, hopefully a good job, and several lifetimes worth of debt.
Also what does an ER doc make as a D.O. a pay range or personal experience with this matter would be very helpful. This is a tough decision to make I guess is why I'm ranting. It all seems very risky from the bottom of the mountain.

Sleep Psych 72,

According to their website, the tuition for 2005-2006 is $43,677. They add on estimated cost of living to come up with the approximately $74K figure. I agree with you that their outta-state tuition is up there, though.

( 😕 By the way shouldn't it be WVSOM?)

How do they come up with $30K for living expenses? WVU lists $7,600 as estimated room and board for themselves. Obviously you have other odds and ends, but come on. I live in San Francisco on less than $30K per year. I can't imagine the cost of living in Lewisberg, WV is more expensive.

They do it on purpose. The number that they come up with is the amount you are able to get for a loan each year. It doesn't mean you are necessarily going to spend that much. I bet it's really about $50,000 total each year, but I live pretty cheap.

i've read other posts from students who are second years and they said that they did just fine on the low end of 60k a year. if you read their budget they put in 3000 for a laptop, 90 per mo. on clothes, etc. it is definitely a maximum.

Thanks that makes me feel a little better about it but I guess either way we are all gonna pay!

They just increased their tuition, or proposing, to ~46,677. It's a good school but come on! The majority of their students end up doing primary care because that's the school's focus. Their students have to do 24 weeks of primary care rotations.

About the budget, don't freak out. Like others have said, they overestimate everything to allow you to borrow more if you need to just in case your significant other will be moving there with you as it is hard to get a well paid job there.

No difference in D.O. vs. M.D. pay so here you go: http://www.studentdoc.com/emergency-medicine-salary.html

Physician Specialty: Emergency Medicine

Lowest Reported $160000
Average Reported $197000
Highest Reported $250000

Thank you all the information has been most helpful.

the rotations are really not that different from all other DO schools. TCOM actually has even more primary care rotations than WVSOM.

and as far as most of the students going into primary care medicine, this is no big surprise. again, this is consistent with pretty much every osteopathic school. but if you look at WVSOM residency match lists there are plenty that matched into competitive specialties: radiology, emergency medicine, surgery, and even plastics, just to name a few.
