Hello fellow classmembers for WVSOM 2008!
August will be coming up fast...it would be great to meet and get know a little bit about the people we will be with for the next couple of years.
I'm extremely proud to be able to go to this school...very pumped.
Congrats to everyone!!!

I've been browsing for a while and was hoping I would see someone from WVSOM for this upcoming year. I'm out of state, so don't know many people from WV. I'm very excited too and looking forward to settling into Lewisburg. Plan to be moving soon. 😀

I really like Lewisburg too. It's so 'television'...a place you'd see on TV.
I will be participating in the PBL program. I was kind of nervous at first...but explored all of my options and became familiar with PBL. I think it's the best thing for me. One of my best friends on the other hand, wouldn't be caught dead in the program. She's more lecture oriented (and will be attending LECOM), I am a more independent learner I guess (which may really mean I tend to zone out more in class  ). But...I hope we all become friends...no matter what program we're in.
I've had several friends attend/graduate from WVSOM and the one thing they always said was how family-like the school is. They said it was one of the major things that makes WVSOM a great school...special educational atmosphere.

I've never heard it put this way! Congratulations!! Do yourself a favor and don't move to Lewisburg at the last minute. Give yourself enough time to get completely set up so that you can start studying the first day of class instead of trying to get your water turned on. See ya soon.

It's so funny that you mentioned that!!! I am having the hardest time finding a place to live. I am originally from WV, but am up in PA...my sister and I both will be matriculating this year. We are going crazy trying to find a place. It would be soooo nice to get settled. We had thought about living together, but also thought having our own place would be nice. We may have to make a special trip down again in beg. of June...we just came back from this weekend without any leads! We called tons of people on the housing list and they are mostly taken... :scared:

Hello! I am so excited about attending WVSOM! I am from the area & it is where I have always wanted to go. I am a little nervous about finding a place though. I hope to find something soon! Any advice would be great!!😀

I will be attending the lecture-based path of WVSOM. I'm glad to see more people from the school posting on here. I too have not found a place to live yet, but I hope that will be fixed in a couple weeks. 😕

I will be attending WVSOM (Lecture Based) next year. When I went to get a place in March it was hard then. I hope everyone finds a nice place close to the school. From what the admissions office told me when I interviewed I thought it was going to be a lot easier to find housing than it was.

I want to congradulate everyone for getting in. I will be graduating from WVSOM next week. If you guys have any questions let me know.....

As for housing I have never heard of someone going homeless. The thing to remember is that in June all the fourth years that stayed in lewisburg move as well as all the second years who are rotating elsewhere. You will see a lot of places opening up. THe town houses behind the RCB Clinic are nice they are at 203 BlackBird way.

Hi to all you fellow WVSOMers! I am also pumped about starting in August! 😳

I went to Lewisburg in April to find a place, and got the first one I looked at. A 2nd-yr lives there now, and he let my husband and I come in to look, and after the landlord left we ended up staying for over an hour asking questions and talking about the school. He was really cool, and it was great of him to do it.

Saffron--will your sister also be attending WVSOM? How awesome to have both been accepted, and how proud your family must be! 😎 😎 It seems like everyone is having problems finding housing--hope you guys are able to live together without killing each other! 😉

FamilyDO2BE--congrats on getting ready to graduate! If you have any pearls of wisdom please share them with us newcomers!

Hey everyone.. looks like we've got duplicate threads going! good to hear from everyone getting ready for WVSOM. I too am trying to find a place- I'll be making a trip next weekend to hunt for somewhere to live. Anyone have any luck or know of a good spot (that you haven't taken yet of course 🙂 ) When is everyone moving to Lewisburg? We should have a BBQ or something... talk to you guys soon.

Pete

Hello everyone!
Yes, my sister is going to WVSOM too. She is Effy(Lesli) from above that posted. No...we're not twins, I'm older by a few years! I did some research for a while and then decided to follow my ultimate dream...becoming a DO.
We got a lead on a house today!!! My parents are going to look at it today at 4:00. Man...it would be nice to know we have a place, we could move in and get adjusted.
Have you guys got your med-term book yet? Just wondering...we got ours today.

Pete...a BBQ is a great idea! Oh...yeah...sorry about the duplicate threads, I didn't know there was one...kind of new to this! If we hear anything else about places I will post them for those looking. Best of luck!

Thanks for the link! Sounds good. 😉

hey saffron- how did the house thing go? i was looking at the list and narrowed it down to about 20. hopefully one of them will be available... we'll see when i make the trip down next friday.

We got the house! Yay! We have never even seen it, but my folks did. Gotta trust 'em. It's really near the school I think, behind it or something.
Here are two places we got callbacks for and were still available...both are newly remodeled.

(they were on list too)
P-G Properties
645-7499
She sounded like she had pretty roomy 1 and 2 BR apartments.
1BR for $650, 2BR for $750

Karen Fankhauser
2BR home, 1 bath, across the street from school! $675

If I hear of anymore open I will post.
Good luck!

Congrats Saffron! That's great I know you are relieved.
Thanks for the tips, I will check them out. I may have already talked to one of the people but will double check to make sure. I'm heading down there at the end of next week maybe stay a few days at the General Lewis (hey, I wonder if we can still get discounts?) that way I can really check things out.
If anyone does hear anything else please let me know.

saffron that's great to hear! when are you guys moving in? get ready to fire up the grill for a bbq!

hey wvdo, im going down thursday night to look on fri/sat. nothing like a little friendly competition 😉 . just kidding. but yea, hopefully we can still get the discount! if youre there on friday, let me know, maybe we can meet up. good luck!

For all those thinking of looking for a house this weekend (May 28). This is graduation week and every hotel in the city I think is booked. So call ahead

I've definately found that out! There were only 2 rooms left at the General Lewis when I called earlier today. Good luck to everyone looking!

Good point, I forgot all about that. You might bring a sleeping bag and sleep on an OMT table. You won't be able to move in the morning, but it's an idea. 😱

Oh man. I am glad I got on here and checked the posts. I was going to just head down later this week, expecting GE not to be too crowded. Thanks. I will be postponing the trip now I believe. Have fun Pete, let me know how things go.

Well, I managed to find a pretty nice place to live yesterday. It's one of the townhouses on Blackbird Way. Rent is a little steep at $600, but the landlord is doing a lot of renovations and is putting in all new appliances. I even have a really nice gas fireplace 😉 . He's also the former mayor, so that should be interesting. All the neighbors are apparently old, so I think it should be pretty quiet (of course I'm not so quiet all the time, so we'll see how that goes over...). There were still some places available... There was one apartment at 207 1/2 Lee St. (very very close to school), a few apartments above the ice cream shop downtown (a little noisy though), and a house a few blocks away (call Larry at Villa Land Co.). Also, one of the docs who I work with here in Cincinnati used to teach there, and he suggested talking to Martha Hilton, a real estate agent. She called me after I found my place, but said she still had some things available (sorry no specifics). I'll be moving in during the last two weeks of July, so see you all soon. Good luck to everyone!

This is my building... I was unaware an apt was available. Maybe the landlord gave me the boot and I just don't know it yet.

I will be living at 207 1/2 Lee st. next year. In february he said that was the last one he had to rent there.

Apparently someone living there has decided to move, so one of the spots has opened up. I think the contact person is Tom Voss (sorry no phone number).

I'm glad people are finding places! Awesome.
It has been days since I've been able to get on here...the apartment is upside down. Lesli and I are starting to pack and hope to move sometime in mid-June. We're on a street called Crowfield Circle...maybe that's near Blackbird Way. Maybe they have all the streets back there named after birds! It will be so weird to see the house for the first time when we actually move.
This is totally off the subject...but I would love some advice if there is any out there...has anyone had or know anyone that has had LASIK? I've researched it to death, but get worried about the dry eye thing. I have somewhat dry eyes now (mostly from allergies)...
Thanks!

Hey Saffron, I remember seeing Crowfield Circle-- it's a little bit further up on Blackbird Way (it turns out the first place I looked at was the one I ended up taking. I started at 830am, so we had plenty of time to look around). That's crazy that you're moving to a house you haven't seen! I don't think I could ever do that! But it's really exciting you get to move so soon. I don't think I'm going to move until mid July. But once we're all there it will be loads of fun in our little neighborhood 😉. Oh and my parents are getting me a grill for my birthday, so we will definately have a BBQ!

As for the lasiks, I've heard some negative stuff about it b/c of the business aspects (like how they cut costs by giving marginal services, and that there are hidden fees and shady marketing methods). Good luck though!

I'll second this. We all have 5 friends or so who have had it done, but I'd rather not be the 1 out of 100 who has a problem... then have to deal with it in medical school. I have heard of the dry eyes, night vision problems, etc. Down the road a few years it will be perfected. I think eventually everyone will have it done early in life... same with hair removal.... Rock on with your grill, Pete, I use mine every day.

Hair removal too eh? Our grandchildren will be hairless and have perfect vision! What else could we ask for?
Well. I will be weighing out my pro's and con's. I've heard such great success from some and read about a few yucky ones. Definitely don't want to be a yucky one.
Thanks.

If anyone needs to contact him, I have home and cell numbers. Send me a private message.

hey, where are all the other wvsom class of 2008 people? i remember seeing quite a few more names on the list. yup, i'm calling you out....

Richie- Do you have any concerns about not seeing or relating as much with a majority of the class b/c you'll be in PBL track? I think that if I were to go into PBL everyone else would be sick of me after a few weeks!

-Pete

Hey Pete 🙂

Well, I don't think that I will be unable to relate to everyone in the class due to not sitting in the lectures 8 hours a day. There will be plenty of time to connect with classmates I believe.

With regards to your comment about PBL: I have an overadbundence of personality so people may be sick of me. 😉 Heck, who else would ask Dr. Small in his interview "So, since you are the clinician here, tell me, Do you really use OMT alot in your day-to-day patients and does it really work?" (The atmosphere at that moment can be described adequately by scraping a needle across a moving record player.) But ya see, I usually speak everything lightheartedly and with a smile, which makes a difference. I expect that some of my fellow PBLers may feel I am a bit crazy but when they connect with me and see that I love people and I love life, it'll become second nature. Life's too short to not laugh, medical school should be no different! To be honest, I am looking forward to meeting my squadmates in this war against managed care! To arms my brethren! To arms! 😀

As for that unit that just opened up... that is my best friend Jade who is getting married. 🙂 he just moved into their new apartment 🙂 🙂 🙂 I'm so happy for him and his bride to be!

I need to get my booty up there and find a place to live or something... I think I am going to go insane sitting on this waiting list at ECU though. Eventually I am going to have to tell them "see ya later" because WVSOM won't let me live in the basement of the school. 😛 Plus I don't want to end up living in the ghetto LOL 😛

Ah crap, Praxis just went down again and the network people are having a cow. I better go look at it and fix it for them before they lose their minds. 😛
Ah the joys of opening a new urology practice across town. 🙄

Much love for the WVSOM peeps!
Richie

Hey all~

I'm Michelle, and I guess I've been called out!! I haven't posted for a while. It's great to hear from everyone!

I'm glad everyone is finding places to live....'cept Richie....good luck, dude! I was able to secure a place in April, right after I found out I'd been accepted.

I'll be an SBLer....I'm an alternate for the PBL track. I won't be staying in L-berg until I absolutely have to, but I'm looking forward to meeting all of you the first week of August!!

WVSOM Class of 2008

Welcome Michelle 😉 🙂 🙂

Come on are there other WVSOMers out there?

I guess I am just gonna have to run up and plunk down some money on a place before I hear from ECU. I remember praying to God "Please lemme get a yes or a no from ECU, anything but waitlist!" What happens? Waitlist ;P Sometimes I think He's seeing how patient I'll be. LOL *pulls a tuft of his hair out at work*
You all have your ducks all in a row, you lucky people 🙂

*bro hugs (and regular ones to ladies) to my WVSOM brethren*

-Richie

Good to hear from you Michelle! How easy was it to find a place in April? And I wonder when you absolutely 'must' be in Lewisburg by? It looks like I'll be moving the weekend of the 24th....

Richie-- remember to breathe man! I think there are some places that don't require a lease, so at least you can find somewhere to live until you know for sure. Good luck!

I know there must be some lurkers out there... don't be shy!

By the way-- anyone in need of an AC unit for their place? I have one, but my apt. has central heating/air... let me know if you could use one.

-Pete

Hey everyone! I guess I am getting called out too! I posted on here once a while back, but I know Saffron/Dean (my sister) has been updating everyone about the move! As you all know she was thinking about getting LASIK, she went through with it, is doing well and should be back on the computer soon. 🙂
I am glad to see people on here getting to know each other. I am excited about the house we found, its seem like its going to be nice, I trust my parents, but I really want to see it!! 🙄
BTY I am also a PBLer, it will be different, but I think it is the one for me! Hopefully, regardless of our pathways, we can all still interact. I look forward to meeting everyone & wish good luck to those still looking for a place to stay, I am sure there are still some good ones left.

-Lesli

Glad to hear she went through the LASIK surgery well. 🙂

Hair removal eh? I smell bling bling for the person that comes up with a painless way to remove hair. ( And no, electrolysis is NOT painless, might as well hook yourself up to a car battery from what I hear hehe )

Rob, sorry I haven't contacted you lately. There's some crazy stuff going down at work right now. I'll definately have plenty of fun stories to tell you guys about the business world when I get there. Our patients can be crazy! It'll be entertainment! Grille eh? Sounds like BBQ time 8)

Ok I gotta get off here cause I am loafing and I have to install our voice over IP phones now. Dang, 400 bucks a phone! That's a load of change, but they are doctors, they can afford it. 8)

-Richie

Hey you guys~

pete--to answer your ? about housing...I actually only looked at one place in April, and ended up taking it. I am married and have 2 boys, 14 and 11, and we only live about 1 1/2 hrs away from Lewisburg. We still have a house payment here to think about, in addition to rent for my apartment, so honest-to-God, I chose the cheapest place in the directory and ended up getting it! I plan to stay in L-burg thru the week and come home on the weekends, and I guess I will start staying there when school starts. I will be moving my stuff up starting July 1, and will be around for the Smart Start, where I hope to meet all of you before classes start!

On to a completely different subject...have any of you read Stiff, by Mary Roach? I just started it, and it seems pretty good so far. I also just bought First Cut, by AH Carter, but I haven't started it yet. I just thought I would do some light reading before I buckle down and start on the med. terms!!

~Michelle :meanie:

Laugh if ya want but I am re-reading the Harry Potter book again for the new movie that was just released "The Prisioner of Azkaban". Good stuff. I thought it was gonna be lame until I actually picked it up and read it. I'm hooked.

calling Angie again to get an updated list today. 😳 I feel like I am WAY behind in getting a place!

-Richie

Wow Michelle! You'll really have your hands full! I can totally understand why you would wait to move until you absolutely had to. By the way, when does Smart Start start (haha nice alliteration...)?? Haven't read either of the books, and for me they are way to heavy for this early in the summer 😉 -- I'm better off with Harry Potter...

-Pete

Hey guys...I'm back, not in full effect..but doing pretty good!
😎 <----Me in my blinders.

OMG! Mary Roach...I LOVE her writing, she is absolutely brilliant. I have read her column "My Planet" in Reader's Digest several times. She makes me roar with laughter. I've never read a book of hers, but would love to.

Just wanted to say hey guys...going back to the bed... 😴

Saffy! - Glad you are feeling better and are recovering well! 🙂 👍

that med terms book is ok, it's not too boring. made great reading material when I was on the flight to San Francisco and back!

I got my housing directory and am gonna try to find a house again.

Mind and body strong grasshoppers!

Richie, check your PM for a link to an old med term exam I put on my website for you guys. Anyone else want to give it a look? PM me. You'll feel better, trust me.

Hey guys,

Did everyone receive their big brown envelope in the mail with the $hitload of info?? I'm so excited!! 😀 I had just finished the Mary Roach book and was wondering what to read next, and now I have plenty.

BTW, Saffron, STIFF was hilariously funny and a great light read. If you get the chance, you should definitely read it when you're all better. If you can't find it anywhere, let me know, and I'll send you mine!

Pete, the Smart Start starts on August 2, you should be getting the info soon if you haven't already!

Richie--how is the search going for a place to live? Any luck so far? Keep us posted!

~Michelle

My landlord has all the apts here in my building rented, but he is considering renting another property later this summer. This isn't listed in the directory, so give him a call if you're having trouble finding a place!
