WVSOM Discussion Thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Mine said exactly the same thing. I called Annette just to make sure that was what it meant. CONGRATULATIONS!!

I called Annette too!! I couldn't believe it. I'm so excited. Thanks everyone for the congratulations🙂

Being a state school, how heavily does WVSOM accept WV residents? I'm interested in rural medicine, but I'm from TX and I wonder what my chances would be applying to WVSOM.

Good chance, we have similar stats and I got invited for an interview. Whats your MCAT score? Good Luck with the whole process.

BTW anyone know how long WVSOM takes to tell if your accepted or not? I interviewed on Nov. 16, still haven't heard back yet.
Diverdoc you paid WVSOM's deposit? 2K? holy cow!!! (did they refund the money)

I paid the full 3,000. No refund. But theres a slight chance I might still end up at WVSOM. I am from a small town, I go to a small university (total student pop. < 1000. So living in kansas city (kcumb) is not appealing to me whatsoever. But Im worried about having to stay in WV for years 3 and 4.

Desi,

I interviewed the week before you and just found out on Friday. I don't think the committee meets that often. I would not worry yet. You can call Angie or Annette and they will give you an estimate of when the committee will review your file. Good Luck🙂

Generally the committee meets every Tuesday. They will review those that have interviewed prior to the most recent interviews if they just marked your application was complete (i.e. - a letter of rec didn't get there that quickly) . Kind of nice when you think about it though. But this, however, does tend to put them a little behind.
As for the out of state thing. When I interviewed everyone there was from out of state. To be honest with you I am not sure what the percentage of out of state residents there are at the school but I would assume it is atleast 30-40. WV as a whole seems to be a very big draw for students from NJ. And the reason for the high out of state cost is that it is a state funded school and legislation requires them to charge more for out of state students (all be it high). I would tell anyone to apply there, I loved the place when I visited and am excited about going there.
Did anyone interview on Friday October 5? Are you attending the school?

I was recently accepted to WVSOM and I am really concerned about the cost of tuition and living expenses. I am wondering if any current students can give me information regarding the cost of living in Lewisburg. I do not own a car and am hoping not to have to buy a car until my third year. Is there housing available within a mile of campus and about how much does it cost? Do most single students live alone or with roommates? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Also, are any current students paying for school with a HPSP scholarship? Thanks.

BigLing -

I interviewed on 10/5!! Congrats on the acceptance! I just got my acceptance over Thanksgiving - I am still up in the air about whether or not I will go to WVSOM... I'm still waiting on other applications and don't quite want to make the decision yet. I'll let you know! 😀

Floatinglions,
Thats awesome! If you go to WVSOM what track will you do? Where are you from?

I called yesterday and the lady said my file was up for review (I believe she meant yesterday they were reviewing it). So she said to check this afternoon. I'll be finding out if I get in this afternoon! AHHHHHHHHHHh

The PBL student that had lunch with us was very interesting, and it seems like a good program, but I think lecture-based is more for me. - What are you thinking about doing?

I'm from the Philly area.

Good Luck PleaseAcceptMe7!!!

Floatinglions,
I applied to the PBL track. My wife received her PA degree from Hahnemann. I really like Philly.
PleaseAcceptMe7,
Hopefully it turned out well. Let us know if you made it. You probably talked to Annette. She is awesome!! Is this your first choice?

Accepted today.... 😀

And I thought I completely bombed on the interview..

btw anybody know where I can find the Selective service proof they want, I know I am registered but that was like when I turned 18. Anyone?

Congratulations!!! I am assuming this is your first choice. Call Annette tomorrow and tell her you are not sure where to find selective service. She can do it for you if you give her permission. She is a real sweetheart. When did you interview? What track are you taking? Congrats again!!!

Thank you sir!!! I interviewed on Nov. 16, and If I decide to attend I probably will follow the Lecture pathway. I sat in a PBL session, it just wasn't for me. Thanks for the information about selective service, I might have the card still, but I am not sure though. Well, KCOM is my first choice currently actually, I really liked WV but the tuition is just too high for me. And if I go to KCOM I will be able to rotate my 3rd/4th year in MI. I want to stay as close to my parents as I can so If god lets me in to MSUCOM that will be a huge blessing. Good Luck man, I noticed you have PENN interview coming up, congrats. I hear PENN is an awesome school.

Glad to help. If you need the number send me a PM and I will give it to you. Good luck on your decision.

I GOT INNNNN. its my first acceptance but i'm not gonna make a decision until i hear back from umdnj som, which will be the 21st of december 🙁 So i'm just gonna wait until that because honestly west virginia is realllllllly expensive and i'd probably rather go to my state DO school instead. But at least i'm 1 for 1 now. still waiting for pcom and nycom though. hopefully i get into umdnjsom. i wanna get in there so bad. if not, i'll have to just suck it up and pay $45,000 a year for wvsom. its okay though, i love the campus and people there at wvsom though.

Congratulations PleaseAcceptme7. Now all the pressure and anxiety are reduced if not gone altogether. Just to make sure you know that since you were accepted at WVSOM prior to December 14th I am pretty sure that your deposit is due on that date. after that date it goes to 1 month, 1 week, then 1 day. Not trying to rain on a parade just don't want you to loose an opportunity. Is the first deposit for out of state $500 and the 2nd $1000?

The first for oos is $2000 and the second is $1000. Congrats everyone!!!

PleaseAcceptMe7,

The first deposit due date is listed in your official letter of acceptance. I got my letter last Friday and my first deposit date is December 28.

Having an acceptance does take pressure off but it adds a new pressure if you are not positive you want to go to WVSOM. I have another interview scheduled in January and I am waiting to hear from a few other schools. I really liked WVSOM, but the tuition is SCARY!! According to the Osteopathic Medical College Information Book (2008), OOS tuition at WVSOM last year was $49,073. So, the new question is, do I put down the deposit to hold my spot or do I take a chance that I will find another school that I like, who wants me, that will be cheaper?

Soca,

This is the exact situation I'm in right now - holding the WVSOM acceptance in hand (which I'm thrilled about!) but also waiting to hear from other schools.

I rationalize it as this: right now, you can pay $2000 to have your seat in medical school for the class of 2012. Why in the world would you give that seat up yet if you have no other acceptances?

Additionally, if you DO choose to go to WVSOM in the end, you'll have had to pay the $2000 anyway. If NOT, most likely you'll be going to a less-expensive school. If you add the $2000 from WVSOM into your tuition at the new school (mentally of course), you will still come out spending less money than had you gone to WVSOM for 4 years.

How far into this are you already? After tuition at undergrad, MCAT prep course, primary application fees, secondary application fees, paying to travel to interviews, buying a suit... $2000 is just the next (albeit huge) step here in the game.

But atleast it is not due all at once. Only half right now and the other half by March. So it is really less than that which makes FloatingLions point and rationale all the better.

I think the 2k is due in a month, and another 1k is due in March (for OOS applicants only). I do not think its a split up, you pay a total of 3k by March. I don't know about you but coming up with a 1k for deposit is real hard for me, I don't know if I can do 2k in a month. (unless you have rich parents you can pay for everything, or a sugar mama)

You guys are right. $2000 is nothing compared to what I have spent to get to this point. I am trying to look at my deposit as an investment. It's still hard to find that kind of money as well as difficult to part with!!

And Desi, you are right, the first deposit is $2000 (due ~1 month after accepted) and the second deposit is $1000 (due March 15).

PS: FloatingLions are you a PSU grad?

The class that matriculated this year only had 54/211 in-state. All the new spots created in the past few years were basically out-of-state, because they want the extra tuition. You're a cash cow. Not to say you shouldn't go there, of course.

I do have a sugarmamma😀!!! But it is still a lot of money either way and I understand that.

Hi guys! Wow it sounds like everyone is getting accepted! I haven't heard anything and I was complete July 23rd. Is anyone else in the same boat? My status says decision deferred. Can I have some stats of those who were accepted please? Any suggestions?

Thanks! 🙂

I was in the same boat as you last year. I called and talked to Annette and asked if there was anything I could do. She told me that updates to my file would always be a good thing. I did this about every month and got another lor. I received an interview in March and was then waitlisted. I later was accepted for the class of 2012. I hope that helps and good luck!

Thank you! Were your updates more along the lines of your current volunteer work or how determined you were to be a DO? If you could PM me an example I would really appreciate it! 🙂

As businessman said, I would contact Annette on Monday. I talked to herlast week though and she mentioned that she was leaving to go to Germany for Christmas. Not sure when though. I am sure Angela Bowyer could help. I liked Annette more though, even though they were both nice. As for the stats. Mine are not the greatest. you can look on MDapps. But here they are.

If it was easy everyone would do it and you wouldn't appreciate as much when you get in. I wish you the best of luck? What does your resume look like?

Thanks for all the info guys! You are great!🙂

Dr. Kicia,

Will you be attending another school next year?

Yeah Dr. Kicia, I can't tell where you could possibly be going next year!! 😉

What made you decide on LMU-DCOM instead of WVSOM?

Hello Everyone,
I am sure most of everyone has finished finals or is done this week. I would like to wish everyone a Happy Holidays. Also received some good news from Dr. M at WVSOM this morning. I have officially been accepted to the PBL program. Good Luck to those of you that have applied and are waiting. Again Have a Wonderful and Safe Holiday Season.

Hi guys,

I need some advice. I just received an interview invite from WVSOM. I am very excited since this is my first interview invite so far. Here's the problem. I don't have a DO letter yet. I only have an MD letter from whom I was doing research with. My interview is gonna be on 2/1/08, which is less than 1 and 1/2 month away. There's no way I can get a GOOD letter from an DO and have it ready before the interview🙁. What should I do? Should I just contact a random DO from the yellow book and get a so-so letter, or should I just forget about this and hope for other schools that don't require DO letter?

BTW is it true that people who get an interview at WVSOM will be almost as good as accepted? If so, I really don't wanna waste this chance.

(My stats GPA 3.7, MCAT 27, 2 years Research with presentation, I still haven't finished with other DO school 2nd applications yet. I've been focusing on MD application. I love both DO and MD and just wanna be a doctor.)

I think you should go ahead and shadow a DO. After a month or a month and a half they will know you enough to write a positive letter for you. Other schools that don't require a DO LOR always recommend one. The question also always comes up, why DO? If you haven't shadowed one it may be hard to answer.... Good Luck!!!

I agree with businessman. Get started now! Good luck

Does anyone have Angie from admissions' e-mail address? I talked to her the other day and she gave it to me but I left it at work and I'm off this week. I need to send her a letter today. I called the school but nobody's answering.

Thanks!

I just checked my status on the online checklist and I've been accepted! 😀
I'm not 100% sure yet if I'm going to end up at WVSOM but nonetheless, I'm absolutely thrilled. It was my first interview (I interviewed on Nov. 28) and my first acceptance. I was so excited that I screamed and jumped up from my desk, startling everyone in my office. Fortunately, my co-workers knew that I was expecting to hear back from WVSOM soon so they understood my excitement. No matter what happens with the other schools I applied to, I know I'll be going to med school next year! 😀

Razbrygrl3,
Congratulations!!! That is good to hear. There is a WVSOM Class of 2012 Thread around here somewhere. Have a great Holiday season. By the way, are you doing SBL or PBL?

My interview is on January 14th...I'm really excited. While I don't have family in WV, my *entire* extended family lives in PA. WVSOM is only about an hour or so away from them.

This whole process is really unsettling. I started the application process right away (june or july...whenever we could first send our apps in) and WVSOM is my first interview (my secondaries got held up for lack of a D.O. letter).

Does anyone know the acceptance rate for those that are interviewed?
