WVSOM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Here's a typical broad question that hopefully will like to answer...what are the chances for deferred applicants to end up receiving an interview invite? and in what time frame can one expect a final deicision to be dispensed? deferrals are so anti-climactic...yet still sad haha

Is there a reason you are deferred (retaking MCAT, finishing coursework, etc.) ?? Deferrals are not the end of the world even if you are deferred without reason because I read in past years forums that sometimes they will defer people until later in the cycle just so they have a better idea of what the applicant pool is like.

So don't fret... they don't even extend half of their interview invites until December (so I have heard anyways). Good luck!

For those of you that had interviews today, how'd they go? Who interviewed you?

They only do interviews on Mon, Wed, and Fri... I think. They make all acceptance decisions on Tuesday, assuming it's the same as last year.

I thought I read somewhere that someone had an interview on 9/14... it might have been from last year's thread...oops....

So, I will ask again today...lol For those who interviewed today, how did it go? Who interviewed you?

Yeah, I'm currently in a post bac program, so I'm assuming they're waiting to at least see my fall grades. That kinda surprised me b/c i thought i was safe for WVSOM to be evaluated before the fall semester grades were submitted. Either way, I expected to have to wait until Fall semester from a majority of my schools (I guess I underestimated what "majority" means). Thanks, good luck to you too!

I did my interview today, I'll make this short because I'm exhausted. Just got home from my 7 hr drive, and I have class in the am. But the interview was VERY relaxed. There were 3 people who I interviewed with, and we spent most the day with Annette who was so wonderful.

If you have an interview here, just relax and be yourself! I was extremely impressed overall, and really enjoyed the school far more than I imagined. It's very impressive! Goodluck everyone! If you would like more information, feel free to ask me!

So... I had my interview Friday, and it was very relaxed! They asked a few questions that I was not expecting, but I think it went fairly well.

Annette said that they will more than likely have a decision for us on Wednesday morning! 😱 Yikes! I'm sooooo nervous! Good luck everyone! 🙂

ACCEPTED!!! Interviewed 9/15 as well!

Still hasnt sunk in yet that I am actually going to medical school! 😀

Congrats to all of you.
will you mind posting some more details of interview experience?
thanks

Thanks

interview day is really laid back. If you have morning interview then you arrive at 8 and wait for your interview time. This gives you a chance to meet the other applicants. Then you do a tour around the campus then eat lunch with current students. After lunch they take your photo and then do a financial aid talk and then afternoon interviews.

They didn't ask me any hard questions, but if you are coming from a long ways away it will be mentioned multiple times throughout out the day and interview. Expect to be asked why you want to go there if it is far away. They asked me stuff about my application, nothing on GPA but just clinical experience. They really just want to get to know you better.

ACCEPTED yesterday... Interviewed 9/17

6 questions:
1. Why DO?
2. Why WVSOM?
3. We noticed in your first year of college you had 2 C's, can you explain? (because if we take those two C's out your GPA is 3.8+)
4. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
5. What type of specialty(ies) have you considered?
6. How will you handle the stresses of medical school?

There were a few more, but they were more about getting to know me and my perceived future.

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!! :xf::luck:🙂

I started an accepted thread so that we can arrange housing, ask questions about the school/town, etc. I started it mainly to keep from junking up this thread with unnecessary information for those who haven't interviewed or got accepted yet.

The name of the thread is "WVSOM Class of 2015!!!" My feelings won't be hurt if you choose not to use it. lol 🙂 Congrats everyone!

Yeah... they review those who have completed the interview every Tuesday... so it is a pretty quick turn around time. Makes it easier on the nerves if ya ask me lol.

The only advice I can really give is to be yourself! Don't try to pretend to fit the school because then you wouldn't be doing yourself or the school justice. They are very laid back, and they made a conscious effort to make everyone smile and relax. Just remember, they wouldn't have offered an interview if they weren't interested in you. Just be yourself and have a conversation with them. Hopefully you are the same person that you portrayed on your application because that is a big step towards acceptance. I have read elsewhere on SDN and on the internet that the average acceptance at WVSOM post-interview is in the 70% range. So good luck! 🙂

Thanaks.

The ladies who welcome you when you arrive, give you a tour of the school, and help you throughout the day actually fill a form about you as well! So ask questions & smile throughout the day, because those ladies assess you as well!

How long does it take them to notify you about their decision once your application is complete?

It varies, but read the threads for this year and last year to get a better idea... on average I would say that they make a decision within 7 business days of your interview. They interview Mon., Wed., and Fri. of every week, and they have their committee meeting on Tuesday morning at 8am. So you should know by Wed. of the following week if you are deferred, denied, or accepted.

I was told to make a facebook group, so check it out if you want. WVSOM 2015 is the name.

anyone know when/if those of us who got deferred will be reconsidered?

Do you know if they are waiting on any materials (MCAT, pre-reqs, etc.)? Those of us that have received acceptances were the first to receive them this year (other than the wait-listed from last years cycle). So don't panic... there is plenty of time left. 🙂

well they were waiting on my new mcat but aacomas released taht to them a few weeks ago, so they're not waiting on anything anymore...

silence is killing me

hope you will hear something soon from them.

How to see on AACOM website that the scores are sent to the schools?
do the PDF file in front of each schools at AACOM website will reflect the new score?

thanks

yea, click on the PDF, your new score will be there as soon as aacomas releases it.

Hey,

To all of those of you who interviewed today, I hope you enjoyed your tour (it was a great day to see the campus). No worries, getting the interview is the majority of getting in.

do they interview on saturday?
I guess you mean to say yesterday.
I can understand how much hard work it takes to study in med school and one can easily loose the track of days..

thanks

It was probably the people there for the open house on a Saturday. I know that they only interview on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday because the admissions staff said so. They also said that they review the completed applications every Tuesday at 8am in the committee meeting.

FYI: They interview about 40 applicants per week, and I have seen/ heard of people getting accepted as late as March. Soooo... I don't know if that helps your worries or not lol...

I remember being told that roughly half of the class is filled by the end of December. Just because you don't get interviewed until January or later doesn't mean your odds are any worse.

Well... technically the odds are worse because there are more applicants in the pool (deferred apps plus new apps), and there are less seats available (~100 as opposed to ~200). Regardless of the odds, what will be, will be... So good luck everyone!!! 👍:luck:🙂

Guys, How is your interview going on today?
all the best.

I was offered an interview today, but because the school is so far away and I have already been accepted to a top choice school, I will be declining my interview. WVSOM really does seem like a great school, and if my acceptance to MSUCOM had come later in the cycle I'm sure I would have loved to interview here! Good luck everyone!

Congrats. I am sure it feel good to get an acceptence so early in the cycle and that too of the school of choice.

Any ideas how is the weather there?
Any rain/cold?

thanks

Has anyone seen recent match lists? Or know any information about WVSOM's residencies and specalties? Thanks!

Guys, How is your interview going on today?
all the best.

I had my interview yesterday and was pleasantly surprised. Everyone was super friendly and accommodating and the interviewers made me feel like they were really just trying to get to know me. They asked the basic questions like "Why WVSOM?" and "Why DO?" but other than those it was very conversational. Overall the whole interview day was pretty relaxed and the students we met seem genuinely happy there.

Get on their website... it should be in the online catalog.

Hey, thank you for the advice. But, I just looked through the catalog and didn't see the match lists. It only shows 3rd and 4th year clinical rotation hospitals. Did you see the match lists some place else?

Thanks!

Annette had said during the interview day that if you needed the match list to email her and she would send it to you.

You could try emailing Annette ([email protected]) in the admissions office. I'm pretty sure that during my interview she mentioned being able to send us a match list if we requested it. She's one of the friendliest people I've ever met so she probably will be happy to help you out!

edit: whoops! someone else beat me to it!
