WVSOM? Good program if interested in non-primary care?

Anyone have any opinions or thoughts? WVSOM was great during my interview day and I luckily accepted.

But a majority of their matches the past 3 years have been in Family Med and I'm not sure if many students go in wanting that, or its because thats how far WVSOM takes many students.

I have a II at Touro-NV next month which have better match statistics in more "competitive" specialities but I heard mixed reviews about the program there. Help would be great.

Almost every DO school matches majority FM/IM/Peds. It’s a mix of “not competitive” and “genuine want” at all schools.

My school has the top COMLEX 1 score average in the country and either the highest or almost the highest Step 1 of all DO schools and we match 50-odd people to FM every year out of 230. A further 60-odd occupy the other primary care specialties like IM/Peds/OB.

WVSOM has an established program, so it wouldn’t be a bad choice at all if you chose to go there moving forward. In regards to placing, it will depend largely on you as a student. Like Isoval said, DO schools have a focus in primary care, so it’s not unique for WVSOM. However, it doesn’t mean they try to force you in one direction.

WVSOM also randomly has some killer matches every year (ACGME Uro pre-merger, Vascular surgery, CT surgery, etc.) which tells me that for the people who are motivated enough you can find opportunity to get where you want to go.
