Well, I just got the housing/apartment list and am beginning my hunt for housing. Since I live so far away, I really am not going to be able to drive down and check out whatever place I land until I actually move in for school.
Moreover, I would like some input from whatever students would like to contribute. Since everyone in the town is so nice, would it be safe to say that the majority of the houses/apartments are not going to be a complete "surprise" when I move in? Or are there some areas/places that I should stay away from? Any help would be appreciated.

When I was looking for a place to live last year I was in the same place you are. A lot of those places wont know yet if they are going to be available next fall. Which can make things a little difficult.
Something that helped me make decisions was asking people to email pictures of the apt/house that I was interested in. There were some places that I was highly interested in till I saw pictures.
