Hey all. So I’ve been blessed with the chance to attend either of these fine establishments but I need help in weighing my options.

To be honest a big factor for me that is making me lean towards UNE is how great the area is. I am not sure if I would be happy living in rural Lewisburg WV. BUT WVSOM has no mandatory attendance which is also huge.

Honestly both curriculums seem solid, tuition is around the same for both, bothnare ~6 hour drive from home, both facilities and campus are beautiful(UNE has slight edge), and both seem like they can get me to where I want to be in the future.

I’m not sure if this matters but I want to plan on practicing in the NE one day preferably the NJ/PA/NY area.

UNE does have rotation sites in NJ/NY while WVSOM does not.

Any help or opinions are going to well appreciated!

If location is important and the mandatory attendance is less important, then UNE. It seems like you are leaning towards UNE but both are great schools.

First off, congratulations on both acceptances! They are both great programs!

Like Dhooy7 said, if the area you'll be living in and residency location is most important to you then UNECOM. Not that this is a super concrete way to tell as they change in quantity every year, but I just counted and UNECOM placed 41 students into PA/NJ/NY residencies whereas WVSOM put 24 students into PA/NJ/NY residencies with 18 or so of them being PA. Again, these amounts change every year but just for an idea this was this past matches data. Most of this concerns where you rotate and the connections you make there. The fact that WVSOM didn't match as many in that tri-state area could just mean not that many people applied for residencies in those states.

Also, as far as rotation sites for WVSOM, 3rd year you do an instate rotation, however, for 4th year you are able to go anywhere of your choosing.

As someone who is accepted to WVSOM and is planning on attending, how hard would it be for me to match into the NY/NJ area? Also, dont you apply for residency at the end of 3rd year so my 4th year rotations wont really matter as much (please correct me if im wrong)?

Go to a place with no mandatory attendance. Seriously, many people think they learn best in a classroom during first year and then once second year rolls around you really do need that time. Unless the lectures are SUPERB..but yenno...

At my UNE interview, I remember there was talk of getting rid of mandatory lectures. Or perhaps they had already gotten rid of mandatory lectures for most except when there was a special guest speaker. I may be wrong.

Regardless, I would go with UNE (though in fairness I don't know much about WVSOM). I know many smart folks that have gotten through UNE successfully and raved about it to me when I was applying.

You apply for residency at the beginning of 4th year between 9/5 and 9/15. Theoretically, 4th year rotations don’t matter as much since your transcript is already uploaded into ERAS by then. But some programs may ask you what rotations have you done during fourth year already. Also, it’s a good opportunity to do audition rotations in the beginning of 4th year if needed.
